Ok, I am going to give you a run down on who owns the rights here in the States for the Godzilla films:
Godzilla (1954) - Classic Media Godzilla Raids Again (1955) - Classic Media King Kong Vs Godzilla (1962) - Universal Mothra Vs Godzilla (1964) - Classic Media Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964) - Classic Media Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965) - Classic Media Godzilla Vs the Sea Monster (1966) - Kraken Son of Godzilla (1967) - Rights are up for grabs Destroy All Monsters (1968) - Media Blasters All Monsters Attack (1969) - Classic Media Godzilla Vs The Smog Monster (1971) - Kraken Godzilla Vs Gigan (1972) - Kraken Godzilla Vs Megalon (1973) - Media Blasters Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla (1974) - Rights are up for grabs Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) - Classic Media Godzilla (1984) - Rights are tied up, will not be available until 2016. Godzilla Vs Biollante (1989) - Filmyard Holdings Godzilla Vs King Ghidorah (1991) - Sony Godzilla Vs Mothra (1992) - Sony Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla (1993) - Sony Godzilla Vs Spacegodzilla (1994) - Sony Godzilla Vs Destoroyah (1995) - Sony Godzilla 2000 (1999) - Sony Godzilla X Megagurius (2000) - Sony GMK (2001) - Sony Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) - Sony Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003) - Sony Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) - Sony Filmyard Holdings = 1 / Universal = 1 / Media Blasters = 2 / Kraken = 3 / Classic Media = 7 / Sony = 11 Right now; Son of Godzilla and Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla are up for grabs. Do not hope for anything for Godzilla 1985 until 2016. Toho sold all of the rights separately, with Warner Brothers having the television rights; New World had video rights but with them going out of business, the rights have gone into limbo somewhere. At one point, Anchor Bay did try to release it on DVD and in the process, realized that they didn't have rights. They did release it on VHS, however, a lot of those Godzilla films that Anchor Bay did tapes for were believed to be Public Domain until the Uruguay Act went into effect in 1996. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.
Bummer that the German release of GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN (aka GIGANTIS) apparently won't be featuring English subs! I thought there was word from Media Blasters that MEGALON was going to be coming out on Blu-Ray, after all. Wasn't that stated recently? |

This thread rocks!
![]() More Godzilla this summer! I am so having a Godzilla-themed birthday party in May. Paper plates, balloons, party hats (that I'll make everyone wear) - this is going to be awesome. I can only imagine the Party Store clerks face when I tell them that the merchandise is actually for me, not my son. ![]() ![]() |

Yeah, seeing as how this year marks not only the 60th anniversary of Godzilla, but also the theatrical release of the new American film . . . . . . I'm hoping that Sony and Classic Media show us some serious Big G blu-ray goodness! Also, that someone out there (I don't care who, be it Criterion or Echo Bridge) gives us a stateside release of the original Japanese version of Godzilla (1984).

Thanks for the link to the mention of this on Facebook. The quote seems to contradict itself: supposedly the issues with Toho have been worked out, but it's going to take a while to get the discs out? Since work had already been completed on MEGALON, I'm not sure why it would take much time at all to eliminate one or two special features (if that's what is necessary) and get the BD's manufactured. Saying it's going to take a while suggests that there are still some hurdles to get over. |

Surprised to see "Godzilla Raids Again" making it's Blu-ray debut outside Japan. I may go ahead and take the chance to import this one.
It's very odd that in 2010, Toho halted any further releases on domestic (Japan) Blu-rays of their films barely 1/3rd of the way through their catalog and have not released anything since and show no plans to capitalize on the upcoming US Godzilla film. Having picked up almost all of the Blu-rays of their films they did release in those first 4 waves of 5 titles per quarter, I can say the transfers ranged from pretty good (War Of The Gargantuas, Atragon, Godzilla Final Wars) to only fair (most of the 90's films which looked really soft as well as the original "Gojira"). Toho took a lot of criticism for the HD remasters which were done originally for broadcast on the Japanese "WOW" HD cable tv channel around 2005. |

However, even though a Japanese release of the original Godzilla film came out days prior to Classic Media's release here in the States; the U.S. Blu-ray was announced before the Japanese release. Ascot Elite did the German Blu-ray for Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster and it was region free. However, the Blu-rays of Godzilla, Godzilla Raids Again, and Godzilla: Final Wars are handled by Splendid Entertainment. I have a three of their Blu-rays and they're locked. So, best be region free if you're going to get it. I know I am. Quote:
Problem is that they didn't really sell which is why we only got 13 of the 28 films on Blu-ray. And this is why I suspect that more of them are debuting outside of Japan first. I see it as Toho's way of saying that they've milked the older films dry in Japan and that they don't care and if another studio outside Japan can put up the cash for the remasters, then good for them. Toho stopped Sony from putting the Japanese cut of Godzilla 2000 because they didn't get around to putting out the film on DVD in Japan at the time the U.S. DVD came out. |

The Japanese blu rays also cost too much and they arent English friendly so Ill just wait. We do have the Kraken releasing 3 Showa era titles and Im sure Sony will releases some Millennium and Heisei era Godzilla movies
Id like Mothra III to finally get released here in the states |

On a more serious note, awesome thread. I was one of the lucky ones who snatched a copy of Destroy all Monsters on blu ray when it came out. Not the best of transfer, but it has the original Japanese cut and that's really all I'm asking for. Anything else is a nice bonus to me! The commentary was pretty cool though. And I second GMK on blu ray. It's still the best modern Godzilla flick, imo. It's what Final Wars desperately tried to be. |
