Actually, the previous HD master was transferred from a 16mm InterNegative that Don May had created from the camera original for the Elite LaserDisc release back in the 1990s. This new 4K transfer was made from the camera original.

According to an interview given by Don May, the previous Dark Sky master used for the 2006 DVD/2008 Blu-ray was also created from the original camera reversal footage (not really a "negative", in the traditional sense).

It can be seen HERE, by clicking "The Restoration".

Interesting. I never knew it was shot on reversal film stock.

Thanks for the link, Kentai!

So the improvements this time around are mainly auditory? I've got the last BD released and I always thought it looked very good but I also understood that the film was shot guerilla-style so it was never going to look polished. If they can improve on the PQ for this anniversary edition I'll be all over it. But if the upgrades are primarily in the sound dept. then I may just pass on it, at least until I upgrade my own home setup. I currently do not have a home theater system, just using the TV speakers. I'm working on it, though, but it could be a while. I'm also pretty happy with the existing extras package. I'm not sure what else they could come up with to add to what's already done.

I watched the current BD release again last night and I can't imagine this movie looking any better, especially since it's a grittily looking film to begin with. Unless there's an all new doc included, I won't be upgrading.

I already own the Dark Sky release, but I'll still snatch this up. Every horror fan must have this film in their collection.

Actually if you read that piece, Todd Wieneke says it was transferred from the original A/B rolls, not Don May. I've spoken to Don May about this and Todd is mistaken, Don used the IN he created from the original A/B rolls in the mid-1990s for the HD transfer (which is also discussed in the interview you linked). The new 4K went back to the original A/B rolls.

Best Horror Movie Ever!

If this is worth the upgrade, and it sounds like it might be, this will be my 4th or 5th copy of the film.

I haven't double dipped on a Blu-ray yet, but this will be a huge temptation. You are correct, best horror movie ever!

Fair enough, but that Pioneer transfer looks like shit. It isn't even on par with the 1996 Elite LaserDisc and THAT is hundreds of miles behind the beautiful picture quality of the Dark Sky and Second Sight releases.

I can already see it coming. As we draw closer to the release date, images will be released and then compared to the previous releases. Some people will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the new transfer and some people will HATE HATE HATE it.

Some will complain about the color, accuse it of not being true to the directors original intent, others will accuse it of having a blue or teal tint to it. These will be the ones who will attempt to boycott the sales of it, and act like their childhood has been raped over.

Then, others will complain about the ratio, you might see a little more or less along the top or bottom, forgetting that the main action is usually front and center of the screen. (like, who CARES if you see more of the chicken foot laying in the corner of the room or not?)

Then, there will be those who will complain about the sound, the grain, the DNR, the packaging, the special features, and whether it's worth an upgrade or not.

Folks, everyone will have an opinion, so will be good, some will be bad, but you cannot treat your personal opinions as Biblical Absolutes. Just be respectful of other people's right to have an opinion and then we can all get along.
