Oh well then, guess we'll get "The Middle Earth Saga - Collector's Edition" and then after that "The Complete Extended Middle Earth Saga - Ultimate Collector's Edition"
Going to end up owing each film about 10 times
I think you mean The Complete Extended Middle Earth Saga in 4k

Haha yeah exactly. Then the set will have the theatrical editions of LotR in 2D and Hobbit in 3D. Then they'll have a set with the theatrical editions now with LotR in 3D.
Then the next set will be all the extended.ones in 3D.
The list will just go on and on!

Good point, but why not the 13th? Night At The Museum 3 is released that day and that came out a week after The Hobbit in cinemas. Either way i'm fine with importing it. I just wish it hadn't been pushed so far back behind the USA, i mean they could have released it on the Monday nearest to the 24th march, but i guess that wasn't the plan, at least its not as bad as when they delayed Man Of Steel in the UK to December despite the fact it came out in June in the cinema. I guess its just how the UK releases work. As i say i'll just import, DvdWorldUSA are really brilliant service wise and are remarkably quick in posting and delivery considering they are based in the USA.

I got this info from thedigitalbits website

Now then… we have a bit of Hobbit news. Our industry sources are telling us to expect the Blu-ray 3D Combo, Blu-ray Combo and DVD release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in mid to late-March. So maybe 3/17 or 3/24. We’ll let you know when we have official confirmation of that. Either way, expect a Blu-ray and DVD release of The Hobbit: The Motion Picture Trilogy to hit stores around that same time. Then in time for the holidays you’ll get The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – Extended Edition and The Hobbit: The Motion Picture Trilogy – Extended Edition on Blu-ray. And if I had to guess, the rumored but we know for sure it’s happening super-ultimate Middle Earth box set of all the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films will probably arrive on Blu-ray in 2016.

Its funny you should say that about 3D LOTR cause Jackson himself said he wished today's 3D tech had existed in the 90s so he could have made them in 3D also. For now i'm good with just the theatricals, i do own the Extended Hobbits so far and two of the LOTR individual extended versions. If they do release an "Ultimate" boxset with all the special effects and all the trimmings as it were and all of the films in extended form then i may purchase but until then i'm happy with theatricals. Whether or not I get Battle's depends if it has much more to it than the theatrical. AUJ's extended was not really required, DOs's extended was far more successful and had some very interesting and exciting new footage. I've heard that battle has another 30 mins of footage which will make it almost as long as the theatrical DOS, however it depends what extra is added really.

They really need to get the next generation of physical media up and going so they minimise the discs needed or at least have less than two discs for just the feature. The size of these box sets is ridiculous.

I felt the battle a little rushed to be honest. Billy Connolly's character, from memory, just turned up and made a speech and did some fighting and then was never mentioned again. The ending of the movie was superb though. I liked the tie-ups at the end far more than anything out of the six movies so far, especially the wince inducing crap with Frodo and Sam at the end of LOTR.

Yeah, I agree that the focus shifted from The Battle to Ravenhill, but i understood why as it was focussing on the endgame of Thorin and Azog, cause in a way the outcome of the entire Battle sort of pivoted on who would win that fight and the entire trilogy had been building up to their final reckoning ever since the Moria flashback in AUJ. As Connoly's Dain even said, there was no way without a new strategy that they would be able to win that battle, so strategically it makes sense for Thorin to target the brains of the operation.

I personally hope that in the extended we get a couple of scenes of The Battle on the ground inter-cut with ravenhill. Either way, i enjoyed the film as a whole even though the focus shifted to Ravenhill, i sort of just saw that as Jackson wanting a more intimate confrontation which in my eyes works better for the film's narrative than a final duel in the confusion of the main battle. The icy and misty battle royale in the ruined watchtower is a great sequence and feels very substantial as you get a lot of action and fates are decided. Plus the visual of the frozen lake, the ruined stone and the landscapes in the background along with the swirling snowfall and the mist is very visually atmospheric. Thats one of my favorite sequences of the trilogy IMO. I also like the ending too, it ties it up nicely without going over the top like ROTK did, it feels intimate, emotional and ends the movie on a peaceful but heartfelt note.

I was thinking of getting the 3D boxset, but does anyone know when the extended 3D boxset will be released, i would rather have that to go with my LOTR extended boxset

I of course will be the EE edition of this at the end of the year to match my other 2 Hobbit films I've got already
I wish they would release the 3rd movie in a box set with space aside to fit in the other 2! But not likely

I've waited this long and not bought any copies of the hobbit films, I guess I can keep waiting for the extended trilogy box set to match LotR set. Or at that point maybe I can sell that set and get the inevitable LotR/Hobbit extended Blu-ray set.

Since it looks like the trilogy boxed sets are covered by this discussion, I think the title of this thread should be changed as well to reflect this. It took me awhile searching for a message thread specifically for the trilogy release, before I stumbled onto this one.

That is definitely a 100% digital character, it's pretty obvious.

It looks good and looks like BC, so who cares if its CGI or not.

Cool, I love getting free lego. Although this time i'm just going to instantly throw away the cardboard box that comes with it, I learnt my lesson from last time. Screw the limited edition aspect, it ended up just getting destroyed on my shelf.

I watched it last night and it's by far the worst film in the series but I enjoyed it enough. None of The Hobbit films hold a candle to LOTR though but that's due to the source material.
