Extended Edition will apparently be 30 minutes longer, but will obviously come out later than this version.

Just thought people might like to know.

I saw this during an IMAX 3D Trilogy Showing yesterday evening.

This is easily my favorite film of: The Trilogy, Middle Earth in general and of the year.

The stakes are higher, Action is Bigger, Emotions are running higher than ever.

It had Action, Romance, Tragedy, Emotion, Morality and a focus on relationships whether it be father son, family, friends, lovers e.t.c.

Plus it retains the message of the original book plus it reinvents the conclusion giving it more of a sense of scale and importance in the overall middle earth narrative.

The visuals are mind blowing and easily beat most of the other films this year and is a clear jump forward from an Unexpected Journey. The look of the film is more filmic with a more gritty disposition rather than the digital soft look of AUJ. The 3D effect is negligible and only really shows up in certain effects.

Plus Billy Conolly steals every scene he is in as does Christopher Lee, Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving!

A fantastic film to end the trilogy, the middle earth franchise and the year.

I think it's safe to assume it will be £13-15 come release, no where charges £26.99 for a 2D release lol

Yeah i'd assume thats just preiminary. Not sure on the cover art. Its cool cause it mirrors AUJ's with just bilbo but i actually far prefer the posters they have released. Any of the ones based on the banner or the big poster for the entire film would be awesome. That one of bard with the arrow and smaug above him would look cool, or the one with thorin, kili and fili in battle.

Aha, but who steals it when all three are in the same scene together ?
That's easy: mrs. Blanchett

I got goosebumps during that scene, not sure who was responsible. I have a feeling it was all of them.

I'm at the exact opposite sentiment. I thought this was the worst and it felt like Jackson was simply going through the motions with this one.

Dramatic scenes are rushed and the tone is jarring in places, I think a scene that really suffers is Thorin turning against Bilbo, something that should have weight and drama to it lasts all but 10 seconds, there's no sense of build up or consequence because it's over so quickly, and there are a number of scenes that suffer it.

And the action is simply tiresome, fights drag on for ages, the Legolas fight scene towards the end simply keeps going and going to the point that death has no meaning in the film, because the baddies just get back up. When the Azog fake out happened, you're simply thinking to yourself this guy is just going to get back up like everyone else in this film.

The CGI is pants and overused, Billy Connelly was the worst, why use CGI for those him, it just pulls you out of the scene. It's simply an exercise in excess and I never had any of the problems in the other Hobbit films (other than not being keen on the CGI in those either, but not to the degree here).

I though Martin Freeman and Ian McKellen where great, and Freeman is the only part I would say made this instalment worthwhile. But I was simply done with Middle Earth about an hour into this film for the rest of my life.

That said, I think it worth pointing out that I'm glad someone was satisfied with this one, it would of been sad if almost everyone hated this final film.

Can't wait for the EE either. This one needs it more than any other primarily because there seemed to be unnecessary cuts.

Cons: (By no means an exhaustive list)

Galadriel's bit was awesome on paper but the initial shot of her 'other' side bears too much resemblance to The Ring's Samara (as someone else has said) for me. It wasn't so much when she held up the vial of light just the first time we see her she looked like she was heading to a Slipknot concert.

Dain being Billy Connolly. He's OK but did he have to be so much like BC?

I'm fine with Azog and Bolg getting that much screen time in the climax but certainly not at the expense of Beorn and the main battle being abruptly abandoned.

Pros:

Loved how simple yet painterly and atmospheric they made Angmar, looked awesome. As well as the colour scheme during the battle. Snow with those reddish/ brow undertones.

The horns and the battle flags that Azog uses to communicate with his armies. Builds up the tension brilliantly, I thought they were shot very well.

Thorin's madness wasn't done clumsily, it made sense and was well paced.

Love both trilogies. LOTR more but can't wait for EE of this last Hobbit.

I can only imagine the boxset that will come out next winter with EVERYTHING in it.

That's what I meant to say. Too much getting back up.

[Show spoiler] Personally I would have loved Azog to go easily like when he goes under the ice with that rock...then they ruined it.

I think that would of been a wonderful, subtle defeat. But of course
[Show spoiler]Thorin has to bite the dust so it had to happen, it was just a case that by the point you're tired of baddies not staying dead.

If anything I'd say Weta's visual FX artists stole every one of Billy Connolly's scenes, as in stole them away from him. Poor guy was robbed!

No they did not. Are you not aware of Connolly's health problems? The man has Parkinson's and cancer. The scenes where Connolly was on foot are indeed him but they had to use CGI to make him look younger (smooth his face) and to enhance his fighting so he looks real, The only full cg shots of Connolly are the ones on the Pig and some of the more extreme action as his health concerns would not allow him to practically shoot the more extravagant action sequences. I've read the new movie guide behind the scenes book and its all in there.

Weta didn't steal anything, if anything they tried their hardest to make the character's movements similar to Connolly's vocal performance for the problem scenes. That's how good an actor he is, he doesn't need his looks to hit the right comedy beats.

If you didn't like it then fine but I wonder if you'd be complaining if Dain wasn't in the film due to billy's health problems?
