Box Office guru was wrong about Sniper

American Sniper rocketed to sky high buzz which got ticket sales moving, but has quickly seen that chatter disappear and is now falling rapidly back to Earth. A strong sophomore hold of 28% was followed by a steep 53% tumble on the third frame. Even factoring in the Super Bowl, that was a large nosedive. This weekend should see another potent drop especially since two new action entries are entering the field. A 45% slide may result giving Warner Bros. about $16M for the weekend and $274M to date.

Yeah, I read that a while back and it seemed weird. -53% on a Superbowl weekend is pretty damn good. Plenty of popular films drop that low or lower.

Coinciding with its domestic debut, Jupiter Ascending opened in 65 international markets and earned a solid $32.5 million.

The movie's biggest market was Russia, where it took first place with $4.7 million. It also took the top spot in a handful of smaller Asian markets.

Otherwise, though, Jupiter's debuts were unremarkable: it opened to $2.5 million in France, $2.1 million in South Korea, and $2 million in the U.K., and wound up between $1 and $2 million in Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Italy and Spain.

The big-budget sci-fi flick expands in to Australia in two weeks, and then reaches China and Japan in March.
