Shame no one got to the bottom of this... Cannonball Run 2 is only £6.99 from Amazon at the moment and I'm one of those freaks who likes it more than the original (mainly because of nostalgia).

Iv only just got around to buying this, watched it alot when growing up, will probably watch it tonight, so probably would of answered my own question by then, but when doing searches for this online to see what people were saying about the picture quality,
i happened to come across some comments on Amazon where some people said the audio had been tinkered with, or in particular at the beginning of the film and that the engine sound of the Lamborghini had been changed and it now didnt sound the same with that nice downward gear change then overtaking the police car at the end of that opening scene. Is that true? I was dissapointed when i read that, but then thought maybe dont have to worry cos it also comes with another 2.0 audio track, so hopefully that one isnt altered? Hopefully those people were playing it using the main 5.1 audio and didnt have the thought to check out the 2.0 audio. Did that ever occur at the beginning of Cannonball Run then? I thought it only ever happened on the Universal logo at the beginning of 'Smokey & the Bandit Part 2' (unless that's what you was getting it mixed up with) Last edited by Scott in UK; 03-16-2018 at 10:28 PM. |

Right ok iv watched this now so iv answered my own question, and yep it's true, the audio has been butchered. And not only is it a re-tooled audio for the 5.1 track, but the 2.0 track is exactly the same as the 5.1. Not only did i notice changes here and there throughout the film but the Lamborghini at the beginning has definitely changed. It now sounds awful, it sounds like a demented vacuum cleaner, it's bizarre! Or it's like they've ripped sounds from a formula 1 computer game, it sounds artificial.
Im pretty sure aswell that in the scene near the beginning of the film where they land the plane in the street to get some beers, that when victor sings a song to himself as he's walking through the shop, that it now has him singing something about budweiser, im almost 100% certain that is not what he sings to himself originally. Il maybe return here and see if i notice some other things and some comparisons. As soon as the film started and i noticed the Lamborghini didnt sound the same it immediately put me on a downer for my enjoyment for the rest of the film. With some films it dosent bother me when the audio has some changes, but with some films it does bother me, this one bothers me, and smokey and the bandit bothered me, altho fortunately i never got to hear the revised 5.1 track for smokey, cos luckily just as i was seeking the film out to buy, the 40th anniversary edition with the original audio got released, so i never had to experience the old disc. Why the hell do they feel the need to do this with some films! "hey lets take out these sounds, and hey lets add these new sounds". "yeah and why dont we also change peoples dialogue" etc... Diabolical! I know they need clearance for things sometimes, or situations where they need to pay to use certain sounds and music and they dont wanna spend the money to still use them, but when it comes to sound effects, it's like they do it just for the hell of it, or just to make the audio sound more fresh and modern. Well at the end of the day, wether it's the year 1980 or the year 2018, the sound of a Lamborghini is the sound of a Lamborghini, it dosent need to be modernised. However, the thing that stood out to me the most, was the end scene in which Roger Moore gets punched no longer has the sound of breaking glass! The joke loses so much impact without the 'glass jaw' effect! |
