No, it's not in the specs, but any hardware supports it by default. IF a media company slaps a bluray layer on each side of a plastic disc with the correct total thickness, each side is conform to the bluray format, and the disc is readable or writable on both sides, and cost as much to produce as 2 separate discs.

But you missed my point. My point was to illustrate the that it's an artificial way to boost numbers, and also that it won't happen, it's exactly like DVD18, only a few were produced and they were universally hated. Double side discs is a stupid and useless concept.

No, as far as I know there are no drives that can read both sides. The optical block and head drive are complex enough as it is, fitting everything on each side would be an engineering nightmare, let alone the cost of the final product. It would also need to be in the format specs, otherwise the software wouldn't be able to follow from one side to the other.

cobalt, you are confusing double sided with double/dual layer. the number of layers is how many writing areas there are on a single side of the disc. the double sided is that there is a written layer on each side of the disc.

the 30gb hd-dvd discs are dual layer. this means no flipping necessary. this is the same as a dual layer BD 50.
