I recently heard that they're introducing a NEW format and that eventually everything will probably just be on the "cloud". At first I was kind of unphased since most non-tentpole action movies are already at their best on Blu-Ray (I mean seriously, do you need to see romcoms in 8K or even 4K?), but now I am a little discouraged from continuing to build my collection. It's like "Well either I'll have to rebuy a bunch or just get digital copies on the cloud".
On the other hand, I have built up a decent collection and I wanna keep pushing and I was wondering how others are continuing forward. ![]() EDIT: Realized that this may be in the wrong forum but there is no delete option. Apologies! |

Honestly, all I ever wanted was a way to watch films in cinema quality in my own home. Now that I have that with Blu-ray I don't see a point to upgrade any further. I am more than happy just collecting blu's and I am not concerned with further advancements. I can already watch movies like Prom Night, Last House on the Left and Maniac in better than cinema quality in my home. What more do I need than that?

Keep buying to your heart's content - physical media isn't going away anytime soon. As for another format taking over, I wouldn't worry about it. The studios have seen fit to stop production of catalog Blu-ray titles and have decided to farm them out to independent labels, who do not have the budget to buy into yet another niche format that they know will only be adopted by deep-pocketed collectors. The only issue to be concerned about really, is space (or lack of). If buying movies on physical media makes you happy, why stop?

For the most part, you can probably buy whatever you want without worrying about UHD disc. At least as far as existing catalog titles, I might think twice about paying full price for new releases, or pre-ordering any newer "4K remasters" on blu-ray - because those very well could be UHD launch titles.
I don't buy new releases anyway, and I"m holding off on a few titles like Goodfellas, Apollo 13, Spartacus, etc. I at least want to see what happens with UHD over the next year or two. But other then that, nothing has really changed for me. |

We love to have a bookcase with the titles stacked on the shelves...its our home decor (where chicks decorate with flowers/candles and sh%t, we do with our collection) We dont want to be hostage to unknown factors. Example: one day I came home from work Friday 5pm. Internet was down. I called internet company but they couldn't get someone out until Monday. Had I not had a blu-ray collection, I'd have been watching a blank screen all weekend. I dont want to be hostage to online service providers selections - maybe one day an online service won't renew their contract with HBO, which means I can't watch Game of Thrones whenever I want. But if I own my disks, I'm not hostage to corporate business contractual negotiations. |

Even though I am not the OP I want to thank everyone who has responded to this thread, as I like the OP have been terrified of this whole digital cross over as well. I feel much more confident to keep increasing my "Ray of Blue" collection.

Yeah, you need a really big screen to see any difference with UHD (& I don't think most people will see any difference even then), & it looks like the launch will be next year, & it could fall flat on its face. As for the cloud, I don't really know what it is, I thought it was just huge buildings out in the American desert somewhere full of servers, but it seems to be more than that. You can't go wrong with Blu's, & they come in that nice little blue case & they're here now, & really quite cheap & a pretty good choice of movies...& you could be dead in a years time, so enjoy 'em now.

Fortunately, it's a buyers market, not a sellers market. That's why dvd's are still around. Plenty of people don't even care about upgrading to bluray. 4K will never get past being a niche option. They'll be on a small endcap display next to the blurays. Or confusingly mixed in at BB like the dvd's and blurays! Either way, just ignore them and they'll go away. Enjoy your bluray collecting.

Well here's an opinion from across the pond...
Forget about the next step after blu unless your planning on buying a set up that will make the most of it. As for motivation for collection, this week i've just took delivery of a region free blu-ray player. It has really opened up my collection to a whole new area which now let's me take advantage of all lovely blu's that are available in the US (as well as others) that are not available here in the UK. So your all probably see me post in your section of the forum a bit more now as long as i'm welcome ![]() ![]() Maybe getting a region free bluray could also help you get that collecting bug itching again. |

I say do it if that's what you want. How the future looks as far as physical media goes, I don't know.
I prefer physical media for a few reasons. I love movies for one. I wish I could afford a larger collection than what I have. I prefer blu-ray over streaming. While we do stream a lot, if I love a movie enough or if I find the right price, I will buy it. I don't trust that I own something that is not physically in my hands. |

I suppose we don't technically "own" the movies in a physical format either - they're studio property that we paid to have the privilege to watch - but at least with a disc, they should last up to 200 years (maybe even longer) and allow you to watch the movie whenever you want without fail. On topic though, my buying habits haven't changed; I'll continue collecting Blu-Rays as I discover them and clear out my wishlist. I'd prefer to get everything I want on BD, rather than invest in any new formats. I'm doing my part, boss. ![]() |

Blu-ray will be the best most of these movies ever look, let's be honest. Most movies will never get a 4k remaster from the OCN, so any kind of 4k stream would just be an upscale. I think you can feel secure that 90% of your BD catalog purchases will never look better, and you're building a library to last a lifetime.
For the rare few catalog movies that get 4k remasters, and of course new releases, Ultra HD BD will be pretty exciting. Assuming it takes off and sticks around, it will be a great format for new release movies and those rare catalog remasters. It might be expensive, but the quality will hopefully be worth it. If it isn't you can still stick with regular BD, which will likely still look better than streaming for the foreseeable future. With labels like Criterion, Scream Factory, Arrow Video and Kino releasing a lot of great catalog material and UHD BD coming for new-releases there's really a LOT to look forward to in the disc market for movies, even if it will slowly become more and more niche. I don't see any reason to bail now. |
