Buried at the end of a recent Deadline article comes the news that a reboot of William Friedkin’s 1973 horror classic The Exorcist is being developed for theatrical release in 2021 by the folks at Morgan Creek Productions. Hang on to your holy water as we try to parse through what’s going on here.

If they get someone with the creative vision and the balls to do something interesting (Aster/Eggers/Von Trier) then count me in! If it's an overly safe and polished jump scare movie aimed at morons then they can go to hell.

Hope it fails. It simply a stupid film to remake. Yes there is plenty in the novel that "could be filmed" but it's such a classic and stuck in people's minds it will fail. How stupid are people and how ego driven are to to assume?

But I get your point and I'd agree that Hollywood studios in particular, seem unable to escape all the tropes already established in films such as The Exorcist. Hollywood is not known for originality or for taking creative risks. Von Trier dealt with a bit of spiritual possession in his 90s Danish horror series The Kingdom/Riget. |

In this case, nothing they could possibly do would be even close to good enough so why bother? I cant imagine the BS cast they'd use or whatever "hip" director. Barf. Quote:
I will say that The Exorcism of Emily Rose was a step above and I like that too. Great performances. |

Too late - it's already been done, and mostly in 1974:
Abby (1974) Seytan (1974) The Antichrist aka The Tempter (1974) Magdalena, Possessed By The Devil (1974) The Eerie Midnight Horror Show (1974) Beyond the Door (1974) House of Exorcism aka Lisa and The Devil (1975) etc, etc, etc. Last edited by omenboy; 08-19-2020 at 08:26 PM. |

Hell, I'd absolutely be fine if someone like Mike Flanagan was tapped to do this, he has the balance of a risky creative and quality horror with decent mainstream appeal. But if they get an unproven director or someone who flat out doesn't have a good track record, this is going to completely tank.

Well, when you've lost money on all three of your previous Exorcist movies, you might as well go for a fourth. I believe Einstein had a theory about that kind of behavior defining something or other...
