I saw it yesterday, and I felt like I was watching Christmas in July. This film should have been released during the holidays. Wonderful story with the Spielberg magic to go with it. The 3-D was medium for the most part, but looked nice and complimented the story. Too bad it's not doing well at the box office.

I personally liked it because of the visuals and 3d but it's definitely flopping for a good reason of being frankly boring to watch.

Edit: Jack the Giant Slayer is a way better movie than BFG with good suspense and great action.
Glad you enjoyed the 3D Jay. Movie looks great too, yes.

Great point, as it depends on the target audience the movie is aiming for. In this case, fans of the classic book BFG. Dahl also wrote Fantastic Mr. Fox, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach and Matilda, most of which are focused on family stories.

I agree. Disney set this one up too soon after Finding Dory for some reason, resulting in direct competition between the two Disney family films. What the logic behind it the release dates was, not sure.

The initial trailers for this elicited a big ol meh from me - the whole film though - oh I liked it ...a lot.

And technically it's a marvel with the highly effective 3D and the 7.1 mix (wish I could have heard this in Dolby Atmos [which I think is Spielberg's first film mixed as such])

The 3D was effective, agreed, even if they could've pushed it a bit more for a more dramatic, exciting 3D effect. It was consistent though.

the shot of all the snozzcumbers in the air though was a trip. If Robert Zemeckis had filmed it I think the 3D would have had greater depth and pop-outs, he has a strong visual sense in this respect more so, dare I say it, than Spielberg.

My first choice would be Ghostbusters since the 3D I've read so far is really good,
Then BFG
Secret Life of Pets
Dory
Tarzan

Beowulf, The Walk, Christmas Carol, Mars Needs Moms all in 3D, though I only saw the first two listed in 3D but was happy with the pop outs.

That scene went on for 30 minutes. Totally enjoyed it!

You can help conquer a fear of heights by watching that scene in the strong 3D repeatedly, much like when I was a kid when watching the Exorcist over again each year helped me no longer have nightmares from that movie.

BFG, I liked all of the 3D layering behind the glass objects on the tables where the dreams were stored.

The BFG is up on the Disney Movie Club website with no 3-D Blu-ray version listed.

Usually a good indication that they will not be offering a 3-D Blu-ray release.

The same happened with The Finest Hours and seems to also be happening with Alice Through The Looking Glass.

So either they will be offering a 3-D version at a later date ala The Force Awakens and The Jungle Book or not at all in the U.S.

Already waiting to import...wasn't expecting Disney to release this for 3D fans.

If it did Finest Hours numbers at the Box Office, it may be hard to find in 3D anywhere.

The 3D was good, mostly medium layered 3D, with some high medium, stronger shots here and there. It would be nice to have it on blu 3D.

Loved the film. It was a magical experience, with that extra *something* that only Spielberg and Walt Disney himself have consistently been able to provide. Unfortunately, it just opened here in the UK and the matinee screening I attended was almost empty.

Meanwhile, The Secret Life of Pets, one of the most generic CG 'toons I've seen all year, is still packing 'em in. Go figure.

I agree with the previous comments about the 3D in BFG: very nice, worthwhile, occasionally worked a treat. As others have said, it's not quite a strong as, say, Zemeckis's, but it definitely added to the magic. Absolutely a blu-ray 3D purchase for me.

I hope to buy it too, sadly it looks like this is another one we'll have to pay silly money to get from India, Mexico or wherever the evil Di$ney empire allows Sony to distribute the film, because most of the world is just going to get a crappy 2D disc.

Who would've thought a year ago that a Spielberg directed mega budget fantasy movie would end up like this, scouring countries for a 3D blu ray release.
