Huh? Aren't the Region A/B releases mainly stuff they are releasing in both regions? I think their Yoshida set is probably one of the rare examples that's mewnt for the UK but is region free (perhaps a US release is planned). What others that were released recently are you referring to?

I think Arrows most recent release of Deep Red was encoded region A and B while being labeled as region B and only sold in the UK. There was all kinds of nonsense about the issue in the Deep Red UK thread around the time of release.

Ah yeah, I forgot about that one, and I own it . I think it may have been by accident, but who knows. I'd be surprised if there are many non-US releases that will be region A/B, as studios or other licensors may not like that.

Besides Deep Red and maybe a few other exceptions, most of their A/B titles are that way simply because they've secured the rights in both the UK and US.

Does anyone know how long Best Buy takes for their product page to allow you to pre-order a title? Obviously right now this Blu is listed as coming soon. Anyone have any idea when we can preorder?

The import of The Hard Way from the U.K. is available on Amazon.com and it is region free. I'm sure it is because I watched it on Saturday on a region A player.

It's virtually guaranteed that Universal will utilize the awful pre-existing master and release the film bare-bones, so it's only natural in this case that people will lament the lack of a SF edition and express a desire to wait/hope for an improved version akin to the acclaimed one released by Arrow. It's not just a case (pun intended) of slip-case obsession/blind brand loyalty this time.

Even/when Shout licenses this title there's no guarantee that they'll have access to Arrow's transfer. From what I understand Arrow financed the transfer themselves. Universal is even less likely to use Arrow's transfer so any future Shout Factory release will probably just be a port of whatever Universal is using. If anyone wants more than just a cheap plain vanilla release AND you don't feel like sitting around waiting for a Shout Factory release that may or may not happen then Region-free is the way to go here.

I love this place .
And since when are Shout the heroes? I constantly read criticisms of their releases on various threads. Escape from New York comes readily to mind.

Shout just responded to my friend and I and confirmed they have no future plans to release The Burbs on Blu-ray:

Hopefully this transfer is decent because I want to buy it when it gets released everywhere else.

The clean-up work, grading etc was done by Arrow but the actual new film-to-tape transfer was done by Universal themselves (oversampled 2K off an IP) so they've got the raw assets in-house. But I'm still not sure how the rights issues work with new masters of someone else's movie, e.g. we've had a very recent example of a new transfer first seen on a boutique label which then got released on a barebones Universal disc: The Game. And the exact same Arrow video encode of Dawn of the Dead ended up on the Aussie Umbrella release, so all is not lost re: Burbs.

I think there's a good chance that this upcoming Burbs will be another Game: barebones cheapy disc using the new master.

Something which Arrow already released themselves, funnily enough. But of course that one's locked so it doesn't do American folks who can't play region B discs any good.

They can't have any plans to release it until they sign a deal to license it.

I agree, there's a good chance. The fact it's coming out so long after Arrow's edition is more reason to hope for region-locked folks.
