I agree that I don't go out to the theater as much since I have my own set up, but I do once in a while enjoy going to watch a movie on the big screen for the experience. Sorry, there is nothing quite like good movie popcorn. Balance in life is important! Do both!!

Generally if there aren't going to be 30-foot high tits on the screen I'd just as soon watch the movie at home. My brother-in-law prefers watching movies at my place as opposed to the theater as well though I suspect it's mostly because there's usually beer in my fridge.

A few years ago while in grad school I occasionally went to late afternoon showings. One day I ran into a very nice little old lady while exiting the theater who asked me, "What are [you] seeing next?" Apparently she and her friends made a habit of coming out once a week to the earliest showing of the day and simply moving from theater-to-theater until early evening without bothering to purchase additional tickets. When I commented on the propriety of doing so she replied, "Oh we've been doing it for years, they don't mind at all. You should come along and see the next show with us young man."

I do agree that there is a balance of being social, but I dont really see how going to a cinema (theatre) is social as you cant really talk etc ... there are more social things you can do like going to a real Theatre for a real experience with live actors etc or going bowling or even a comedy club...

As for taking a GF to the cinema well... its not as if you get to watch much of the film ... lol plus if its @ your own house there are more advantages than the back row lol you have bedrooms on hand

There were quite a few blind buys for me with catalog BDs, since renting here isn't much cheaper than getting the US BD (especially with all the BOGOS of late). But new releases I still check out at the theater first (Since the company I work for owns most of the Theaters in the German part of Switzerland I get to go for free ).
That said, unless the movie is projected digitally (there are 2 rooms equipped with digital Christies) the quality ranges from really good to downright bad. LFODH for example: I went to see it the day after premiere night and the PQ was terrible. So it's mostly hit and miss and I'm glad that there is Blu-ray for consisten viewing.
All I got to do now is save up for a nice constant height setup

I absolutely go to the theater. No matter how good your setup, and mine has better audio than that of a theater, nothing will ever replace the movie screen for me. I do think the person that talks or uses a cell phone should be summarily executed on the spot, but I am real good at picking times and theaters that minimizes this. I know most of the cops at my favorite spot (Rave) and they will toss anybody that is offensive. Plus, seeing a big movie on opening day can be an exciting experience. Now the reason I chose Blu-ray over the other format is that it can most closely resemble a theater in my home. Go buy some popcorn and have fun.

Movies in general suck lately.
I wait.
I read the reviews then pick n choose.
Haven't been to a theater in years. Don't plan on changing this - even if I could.

I dont go unless its a sequel to a movie I like. Most of the time I go when a good horror movie comes out.

Well I guess we won't ever met at the Starworld 20 then...

Like you, I no longer visit theatres. $15 for tickets, another $10 for popcorn and a drink. I can buy a movie at watch it in the comfort of my home and use the $'s invested in my home setup to justify it's expense. I can also grill a couple of steaks for "dinner and a movie", with my wife and have a much more enjoyable time than I ever could at a crowed, smelly, noisy movie theatre. I can drink adult beverages instead of watered down fountain drinks and if a bathroom break is necessary, it's a simple press of the pause button and you don't miss a thing.

Going to a movie theatre offers nothing of value to me any longer.

My dilemma is a little bit different. My wife and I used to go to the movie theater because we didn't have a nice tv setup (30" old HDTV, big bulky and heavy with comp only, no hdmi) and because it was just us 2. Now, with a baby on board and a big 50" plasma, its better to watch them at home. The only time we go to the movies is if we get one of the grandparents to baby-sit for us (we all need some alone time) and if there's a movie that is definitely watching at the theaters, like I Am Legend

I've got an 18 month old, and I know what you'll soon be going through. Pretty soon, you will be watching almost nothing but kids' programming. Disney Channel in the mornings, and Sprout, will become your best friends! Of course, after a while, watching Sesame Street or the Wiggles all the time, will really make you go insane. The best solution are the Pixar-type animated movies, which can be just as entertaining for you, as they are for the kids.

I have a 58" plasma, but I find it's really hard to watch 'grown up' movies at home, when you have a baby. So, getting one of the grandparents to come over and babysit, while you and the wife go out to a movie, is a welcome relief. All parents need a break every now and then!

I still hit the theatre a lot. I like to know what to buy when it comes out on blu. Me and my wife both really enjoy going out to see a flick. During the summer blockbuster months, we're usually in there once a week seeing something new. After that - maybe once or twice a month. I'm not a big popcorn fan though, so that does save me quite a bit I guess.

Uggh the Wiggles, lol. My son is almost a year old and he's definitely into them. Its the only show which will grab his entire attention (why? how? ) and also he likes to watch some of the Higgly Town Heroes (song starts in my head... nooooo!!!! ).

We are realizing now that watching a movie takes up to a week now. A 20-min part on monday... 30 mins on wednesday... last on the weekend... and you can't really watch it too loud because then he wakes up, lol. But, having said this, I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. I love being a first-time dad.

Hey, the Higglytown Hereos theme (along with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse) is done by They Might Be Giants. So, I can tolerate it.

I originally thought I probably wouldn't go to the movies much after getting blu-ray except for ones that are a "must see" for me. Then I saw a movie(the brave one) on a christie 2k projector and WOW! I was stunned it looked better than blu and it was on a huge screen. http://www.christiedigital.com/AMEN/...DigitalCinema/
The future of HD looks quite promising. You should definitely try to locate a theater near you that has one its worth a drive to see.
I can only imagine what the 4k projectors look like.
While being able to enjoy movies in your lounge clothes is quite nice. Also the lack of annoying patrons in your home is a big plus. You cant quite replicate actually going to the movies. No matter how tricked out you HT is.
I will keep going to the movies I always have and I suspect I always will.
