As long as they have access to the materials I have faith that we will see some more really good releases from them this year. Really hoping that they'll be doing American Werewolf as I've been holding out on a decent version of that one as well.
That's what it really comes down to. I don't have TCM2 yet, but I've heard good things. And Army of Darkness looks great, as does Nightbreed. But if they're stuck with a bad transfer they've been given, there's only so much they can do. Again, I'm remaining cautiously optimistic.

I know scream really wanted scanners and the brood but missed out on them because of criterion, so they probably jumped at the chance to add a cronenberg title to their catalogue. Kind of an odd title to be in the scream factory line though. A title like The Fly seems like it would be more suitable than Dead Ringers.

It looks like TIFF restored this recently, so hopefully Scream have access to that.

Does anyone know who owns the rights to Shivers and Rabid in the US?

Lionsgate.
If this news of them releasing their horror is supposed to actually be a thing maybe we'll get lucky and these will finally make their way out.

What news? I haven't heard any. The director of Chopping Mall is making noise saying they're going to release that, but he said the same thing two years ago. If they do, I think it's just cause he basically gave them all the material for a release and harassed them non-stop for two years. I am unaware of any signs that they're going to change their standard operating procedure.

FWIW, Criterion apparently licensed the extras of this to a Canadian company called "TVA Films" for the "15th Anniversary Edition" DVD release. (DVDcompare also lists a Hungarian DVD with the commentary track, but I'm going to just assume that was pirated.)

I remember seeing this, in the theatre, while in high school and afterwards my fiends and I were like: what the heck did we just see!
I think our girlfriends were dreading their next OBgyn appointment after seeing this!
Definitely happy to hear SF is releasing it.

It's a little poopy that Criterion won't be able to re-release it...

But at least it's getting a new release!

I'm fine with Scream or Criterion, I hold them in similar regard, which is high. Criterion is great, but it's not like they've had to pass along shoddy transfers they've been stuck with, or crammed too much on a disc and had questionable compression. By and large they both do far better than average in at least wanting to do right for their customers and we should be stoked ot hear a release from either for a title we love.

Scream to me is very much the Criterion of horror.

Although I wish Criterion or Arrow were releasing it, I'm just glad this masterpiece is FINALLY coming out with a proper Blu-ray.

I remember when I first went to see this movie. The Universal City Walk theaters had just opened and I went there for the first time. It was a completely different experience than going to the theaters in Hollywood like I was used to. It looked like a train station. Cold terrazzo everywhere. They made people stand in roped off pens outside doors in a long hallway. It was the least appealing place to see a movie that I had ever seen. Then they opened up the doors and we all paraded in like cows going into a slaughterhouse and sat down and watched this ice cold movie. At the time, I was totally put off by the whole thing. Perhaps now, in my own comfortable home theater I might feel different. I'll see.

No, the last time he said "someone" was going to put it out but then lionsgate put a stop to it which is why we never got it.
Its still a very likely possibility.

I saw that one when I was 20 and it was one of the two flicks that messed me up in the whole life (the other one being "Jacob's ladder").

Incredible news. Was so frustrating knowing this was given a slap-dash interlaced release previously.

I'd really like a special feature starring David Cronenberg where we get his live reaction to the unveiling of Scream Factory's newly commissioned artwork. :P

Hopefully they'll do something more classy than what we're used to considering this is a more artsy Cronenberg film and a lot of the more straight-forward horror fans won't be interested in it anyway.
