Wow, I was expecting $20 or something. I paid less for the complete series Blu-ray.
It'll have to be a pass for now.

Interested in this for 40$ max, even though I would have preferred a disc of just the special features. I only paid 60 for the whole series, ao...

yeah that's ridiculous. I was figuring $29.99 list, with a real price of $24.99 to $19.99. They're not going to sell any of these.

Ha ha ha, CBS can **** right off with that list price. It'll come down I'm sure, but it'll still be in the $40-$50 range which is too rich for my blood.

Ha Ha Ha, They're trying to pull a foolie on us, right? (Kudos Geoff on that blunt talk.)

I mean, I have been watching from the very beginning in 1966, and then after the series ended, sometime in the mid-1970's, it was reshown in original episode order on some (or all, IDK) PBS stations. Never thought back then we would get to see so many wonderful worlds, aliens, villians in the future (TNG was really great most of the time, I loved the story arcs on DS9, and even Voyager got better over time with Janeway, 7 of 9, the Doctor, and the time travel story lines. I have no fond feelings for Enterprise, though.)

I bought my TOS BD sets in Feb 2010 at Best Buy (this would be approx. 10 months after the initial $130 msrp price) on sale for $40 a piece. My guess was they weren't selling back then as fast as hoped. Jump forward now and CBS wants $76 for 12 ep + some cool vault stuff.

Don't fall for it guys and gals, just give it some time (4 - 8 months and you can probably find them on sale for under $40, or maybe $30, or less. That's what I'll be waiting for.

I don't know if it's too expensive really, but I know I don't care enough about TOS to buy it at that price. I'm more a TNG era guy, and am fairly sure there are some TOS episodes I have only seen once. It's a fun show, but not my thing anywhere near as much as the others.

Oh I know. I have been active on Trek forums for 15 years or so, even was a moderator for a long time, and I know for many fans TOS is where it's at. Whenever people show a preference for TNG era there are always 10 pages of posts that follow arguing about how insane that is. In the end though I bet it's pretty common, especially in 80's kids like me.

I will say Undiscovered Country is probably my favorite Trek thing and the start of my fandom, so at least it has Kirk and Spock in it.

Honestly, I love TNG and I never understood the resistance it got in 1987-1989 from older fans.
TOS has that "first love" kind of nostalgia for me. And It's hard to be a sequel series in sci-fi because many of the good concepts have been used.
My favorite stuff from TNG is the Klingon, Romulan, Borg, Cardassian plotlines. I'm really hoping that starting next year for the TNG 30th they release themed box sets. I gave my oldest daughter all my TNG season sets.
I'd sure love to have all dozen or so Klingon episodes in a handy set -- rater than fishing thru 7 seasons when I want to binge.

I'd say TNG is the most popular Trek show. Although that's mainly down to the influx of new younger Trek fans (younger as in born post 1980), and many of them won't even attempt watching TOS because it's "dated" etc. If you look on the Star Trek subreddit it's pretty much entirely around TNG and DS9.

My friends are the same, they have watched TNG and they are only familiar with Kirk and co due to the films, they have never watched TOS.

There is no mention of any future sets so it looks like there is one release of these "vault" sets.

If they releases just those unused scenes by them selves then people probably would be complaining that it's a "lazy" release with no effort put in by the distributors.

Its not like they're interactive or "remastered" or anything special.
I'll be getting it when it's cheaper, and I don't have any of the TOS sets, just TNG blu-rays. I'm sure that at least "some" (thousands?) fans will be getting it, doesn't have to be either of the one extremes. ie no one buys it, or a million buy it.

... So there's no reason they couldn't have done the same here. We don't need hundreds of 5-second clips to be viewed individually - just put them all together into a "lost footage" segment. We don't need them mixed into a documentary to see them.
But those out takes weren't released just by themselves, were they? Didn't you have to buy the whole set/season in order to watch them?

I think they will sell a lot a lot more "Vault" sets with these twelve episodes the if the they came out with re-release of the complete series. What would you prefer to pay? A set with 12 episodes for $50, or the full series for $100+?

Those that already have the whole series probably don't want to re-buy it again just for those out-takes, and those that don't have it, or don't want to spend $100+, can get a nice compilation of the best/popular/significant episodes from TOS.

Offer a discount? Right. Maybe in another alternate universe.

But it's got a very pretty case!

C'mon, you know you want it. Sure, it'll start to fall apart with in 12 months, and if you don't get it from a B&M store, but shipped from Amazon and co. we all know what the state it will arrive it reaches your door.

But seriously, I'm sure that eventually the set will come it a regular case and the price will be more to your liking.

Are you sure "any"? Have you ever seen/met/heard/read of these people who consider themselves as "Star Trek Fans"? There are plenty that will eat it up. Once again, it doesn't have to be one or the other; no sales, or a million sales.

Totally agree that it will come down on release day, and eventually a bargain price will come along as "list price" doesn't mean anything at all. No reason to tell anyone to phuk right off.

Once TNG blu-ray seasons went for $30 each so it's highly likely that will come at a price that's rich enough for your blood. You'll just have to keep your eye on it for any sales in the future. We might even get lucky at the next Black Friday sale.

$76.99 for 12 episodes we already own

And there's no way any special features are worth that amount of money.

CBS can go to hell (until the price drops to $29.99)...

$40 would be my max too, although I'd feel much better at $30. The waiting game begins.

$40 is my limit. But if it's at $45, I'm going to just want to get it over with.

From TrekCore twitter:

clarification for you on Roddenberry Vault: December is not 'Volume One,' the RV release is expected to be the sole release.

PETER KIRK is in Roddenberry Vault.

There is never-before-seen footage of the Botany Bay model in Roddenberry Vault features.

Restored clips - because they are 'incomplete' scenes - are not available as seamless branching in episodes, just in documentaries.

episodes are in 2K from 2009 remastering, found-footage clips are a mix of 1080p and SD based on film quality.

HD version of the eps, but the non-CGI versions.

Each Roddenberry Vault disc (3 disc set) will have about an hour of interviews w/ clip, plus a catch all 'loose clips' feature and another 90-min doc. Plus: ORIGINAL EFFECTS, not the remastered CGI.

will have a deleted scene from "Space Seed.

I really wish they'd state how long these "loose clip" featurettes are... I feel like that's what everyone wants to know.

I have a feeling they'll be like, 6 minutes or something.

Well I ordered the "Origins" disc and it arrived today and.....

.....if you like grain -- this is your release. The grain is carrying on. In this case the guy on the DNR button fell asleep with the dial turned to ZERO. A few years ago, I would have been bothered by this much grain, but I've gotten used to it. I really hope that the Vault release has a similar lack of DNR.

If this is a one-off deal,i can live with the price tag. After all,the 50th anniversary only happens once.

If this truely is a sole release, then how much of the outtakes are included? And will the remainder turn up on future home video releases?

The image of all those canisters resting on the shelves looks like far too much material to include on a 3-disc set.
