To answer your original question: The recent Star Trek movies, Ghostbusters (2016), Life of Pi, and X-Men: DoFP are great 2K upscaled movies. Obviously, I didn't mention all of the animated ones, they get a free pass as CG movies scale up awesomely. Again, I haven't seen TMNT:OftS and Pacific Rim in UHD yet, but I have heard great things.
I keep hearing such great things about the star trek fiilms. Considering I recently bought the blus, I really wasn't planning on upgrading but I might have to now.

And why so many conflicting opions on mad max? does it have to do with individual tv hdr?

I thought Martian was a 4k master?

All these price drops on uhds recently has really got me itching for more. But with black friday around the corner, I don't want to buy these 2k upconverts for $22.99. Only for it to be $14.99 come black friday. If any uhds go on sale, I am sure it'll be 2k upconvert catalog titles right?

The Digital Bits had this to say....
Quote:
"As confirmed with the studio, the film’s live action imagery was shot by cinematographer Dariusz Wolski in 5K resolution using RED Dragon cameras (mixed with 4K GoPro HERO4 footage and other sources). This was downconverted to 2K, combined with 2K visual effects, and then the film was graded and finished to a 2K digital intermediate for its theatrical release. For this UHD presentation, that 2K DI was upconverted to 4K again and then the studio went back to the original 5K raw camera assets for the live action footage."
How I read that is: Any scene with CG is upconverted from the 2K DI, and the untouched live action scenes are real 4K. Even if the scene has a small window replaced in the background, that scene has to be one of the upconverted ones as they can't separate the CG from the live action after it's been mastered. And Mr Wolski says that the CG comes from the 2K DI.

So, half the movie is 2K and the other half is 4K. Interesting.

Mad max is a strange mix bag. I previously had a js9500 but was kind of meh on the mad max hdr. Rewatching on a ks9800 though I had a better appreciation. The more saturated colors and brighter highlights gave me the wow it was previously missing. No doubt that different hdr tvs will take better advantage of the hdr/wcg than other tvs.

This doesn't make sense to me, not sure what you mean. Price is irrelevant since I'm commenting strictly about picture quality. Ks9800 is better in every aspect. And next year's flagship will be even better. Hopefully the better specs trickle down into the cheaper sets.

My bad, just thought the ks9800 was Js9500's "little brother"

I really believe we will get a few titles as low as $9.99 this Black Friday. Fry's had Hancock and Pineapple Express for $12.96 yesterday, so I really think that is a possibility.

Don't get me wrong, I love my oled. But I think oleds still have a long way to go in terms of hdr.

A friend of mine who returned 2 e6 oleds just recently bought the Sony flagship and he says he was wow'd by mad max. Where with the oled, he suggested I skip. He said the sheer brightness of certain scenes was blinding.

RealorFake4K, in movies like the martian, does that count as being real 4k?

I still think you guys are being too optimistic. But with black Friday around the corner. I'll wait. Fingers crossed for some good deals, even though I bought like everything I wanted with the recent best buy sale.

The oleds next year should get another nice boost. There's someone on avs that has owned every flagship this year (oled, z9d, Vizio P, js9500, ks9800), he chose and kept the ks9800 despite not having the perfect blacks of the oled. Tvs next year and so on will just keep getting better.

After having owned nearly 50 4k blu rays, I don't put the Martian anywhere near top 5. It's super inconsistent and has an upscaled look most of the time. The outdoor Mars scenes greatly benefits from the hdr which gives a nice boost to perceived resolution.

There is no other movie edited like 'The Martian' as far as I am aware. So, yes and no. The frames/scenes without CG are Real 4K. Any frame/scene with any amount of CG is from the 2K DI, so those are Fake 4K.

It is a good looking disc either way. I'm just glad I finally understand what was going on with that disc. There was a lot of wrong and right info being passed around, it was a confusing situation for sure though.

Well considering just how much of the movie is cg, id consider it a not true 4k.

And I kinda feel like I jumped the gun purchasing this oled so soon at such a high price. I hope it's not something I'll regret come ces 17. But when I saw it at CES 16, I said to myself that I had to have it. But with all these hdr "issues", I am kinda wishing I went with the z9d.

You liked crouching Tiger? It was kind of hard to watch for me. The grain was so strong on just faces. Made it look like the Asian women had black pimples all over their face.

Crouching Tiger looks great, the grain is part of the film, to take it out would severely hurt just how sharp the image is. It's not the go to demo disk in my opinion but it does a fantastic job of faithfully presenting this film as it was shot.

I don't mind grain. It def added to the pq of Labyrinth in a great way. I just wasn't feeling it on this movie though. I'll have to give it another watch.

What I seem to be noticing not just from this forum but others is that 2016 oleds hdr is inferior to other tvs this year. In no way is it considered bad but not as good.

I'll have to pick up Pacific Rim soon and see how it compares.
