All those millions of home video royalties probably.

George Lucas was very frugal with his money, often spending the minimum for his 3D conversion of Episode 1 (mild 3D), and canceling his live action show due to concerns about the budget. Possibly it could've had to do with his plans to give up Star Wars to Disney.

Oh man, I forgot that was her as the witch. Thanks. Yes, I saw that in theaters and have the blu ray 3D. I thought she did a decent job, though the voice over for her witch form seemed odd.

Not sure how much exactly. I know an American company put in about $50 million. Europa may have covered another 70 mil. The rest may have been his unless there was some other co-financing.

If Shia LeBeouff was the lead in this, I'd have second thoughts about seeing it even in 3D, unless he completely changed his style and toned things down compared to his way over-the-top performances in the Transformers films. In his defense, I imagine Michael Bay encouraged him to act that way for the sake of humor. I haven't seen him in a major film in a long time though, so no worry. He was decent in I Robot anyway, in a small role.

The kid that played Green Goblin, Harry Osborne in Amazing Spider-Man 2, did a decent job in that film despite his hair style, so I believe he'll be able to give a believable performance here too. The girl, I haven't seen her in a movie yet. Hopefully she's a good actress.

That said, it's a good thing when we get some newer actors to headline major movies and give more actors a chance instead of every movie having Mark Wahlberg in it. He even wants to take over the role of Nathan Drake in the proposed Uncharted movie... In his defense, he did a good job with what he had in Transformers Last Knight.

But yeah, the 3rd trailer's 3D was amazing also. So great to see a film that seems to care equally about the 3D too, as with Guardians of the Galaxy 2 3D.
Dane DeHaan was in The Place Beyond the Pines and acted well in it.
If you haven't checked it out yet, he was also in Metallica: Through The Never 3D. I highly recommend it.

He is a good actor. I saw A Cure for Wellness the other night and he was very solid in the lead. And Chronicle, the found footage superhero film, showed what he could do. But in no way, shape or form is he a likeable leading man. Clearly Besson has something else in mind--DeHaan and Delavingne are the ultimate emo duo.

Thanks Ray. Yes, I saw Place beyond the Pines with Ryan Gosling as a bank robber for a short section of the segmented film. I didn't realize this actor was in that movie.

Cure for Wellness looked interesting. Chronicle I saw also, though was not a big fan of it's style and odd logic. The kid got angry without much cause or at stake after finding those powers.

July 21, 2017. Should be interesting to see how it turns out.

Valerian is made for 197$ million dollars +. That's a giant budget to work against. Reminds me of Tron Legacy, though Tron had a built in niche audience (myself included). Tron Legacy, which did okay in the US:

Tron Legacy
Domestic Total Gross: $172,062,763
Distributor: Buena Vista Release Date: December 17, 2010
Genre: Sci-Fi Action Runtime: 2 hrs. 5 min.
MPAA Rating: PG Production Budget: $170 million
Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $172,062,763 43.0%
+ Foreign: $228,000,000 57.0%
= Worldwide: $400,062,763
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=tron2.htm

As long as the box office doesn't turn out like John Carter:

John Carter
Domestic Total Gross: $73,078,100
Distributor: Buena Vista Release Date: March 9, 2012
Genre: Sci-Fi Adventure Runtime: 2 hrs. 12 min.
MPAA Rating: PG-13 Production Budget: $250 million
Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $73,078,100 25.7%
+ Foreign: $211,061,000 74.3%
= Worldwide: $284,139,100

Reactions are coming in, and as we all thought, it sounds like the 3D shines. Although it also sounds like the story is lacking. Shame.

Their reactions are mostly positive, even though they mention some clunky dialog and a more predictable 2nd half. Many mention to see it in 3D, so that's a plus from critics who may not be fans of 3D. Sounds promising.

Received advance screening tickets to see this next week, not sure if I want to spoil my first viewing of the film if it's not being screened in 3D

Saw Spiderman Homecoming last night, great film but the screening was in 2D. While watching it the whole time I kept saying to myself " I wish I was watching this in 3D ".

Thanks. Yes, the 3D in both of these would be worth watching them again if they were enjoyable films.

Good point, I guess on the second viewing I can just sit back and really enjoy the 3D experience. I'm definitely going to see Spiderman again in 3D next time.

Gonna double dip the 4K and 3D.

It's already a cult classic in my book.

Next to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 3D, Valerian 3D looks like a top contender for 3D theatrical film of 2017.

Does anyone know which studio will be releasing/distributing this on Blu-ray? If it's Lionsgate, it could mean no 3D release.

Ever since I saw the first 3D trailer I was hooked. Then each 3D trailer that came out afterwards was just icing on the cake. I hope the 3D actually surpasses Guardians 2, the worlds in Valerian look incredible as do the creatures.

This movie is either going to rejuvenate or break EuropaCorp though, if it flops worldwide it's probably going to be the end of them.

Since EuropaCorp signed a 3 year deal with STX, it will be distributed by Universal in North America.

Thanks. Universal has been spotty with their 3D support, so let's keep our fingers crossed.

IDK, the two most recent STX films (Their Finest and The Circle, and seems like The Circle is a Europacorp co-production as well) are getting their home versions released by Lionsgate, so they may have switched over to them.
Both studios have had spotty 3D track records, so I think it might come down to how hard Besson pushes for a 3D home release (does look like they are advertising the 3D more heavily than usual theatrically at least).

You're right Lionsgate did distribute both of those films. It's interesting because everywhere you look, even the companies (STX) website it says Universal handles all of it's Blu-ray releases in NA.
