Here's hoping someone finally decides to include the original theatrical audio and not the various remixes from the Special Edition onwards. The original 70mm Dolby mix was legendary for its powerful sonics-all of which were subdued in the 1980 reissue and beyond most particularly the bass which was originally fed through the baby boom channels.

Finally - a movie(catalog title) thats actually worth the 4K transfer & effort. I hope they do this. I might just rebuy it!

The real question is what version will they be using? I don't want to see the inside of that ship.

I hope they do the same as the Blu-ray set by including all three versions. If they only include one I hope it's the Director's Cut though.

I agree completely. Ideally they include every version and also port over all the special features from the previous Blu. If they take the lazy approach I'm really hoping for the Director's Cut.

I'm not sure what your surround setup is like, but Close Encounters has, hands down, the MOST bass of ANY movie in my entire collection. When the UFO lights first kick on over Roy's truck, my entire room is basically rumble from floor to ceiling. It's so drastic, in fact, that I put in another movie because I thought maybe I had my subs set too high. But no, it's just Close Encounters. More bass than what's current on the disc would be darned-near impossible IMHO.

I'm buying unless reviews suck, Arrival made me think my sub wasn't working right ton of bass!

Yep, the bit with the truck rattles everything in my room that ain't nailed down. The sound doesn't concern me as much as the picture, I'm hoping for a brand new 4K transfer from the negative. Do not get me wrongo, the BD was impressive for the time but it's got a lick of sharpening and looks just a lil' bit harsh and one-note these days. If Sony can get this spruced up to Labyrinth or Ghostbusters type loveliness then it's going to be a stunner*.

* Well, it'll be a stunner for those folks who don't think grain is the devil's work.

I like the Ghostbusters bluray better at least on my SDR tv, seemed like the UHD image was darker which accentuates the grain. Was curious if there was something going on with HDR>SDR conversion??

It's the complete opposite on my SDR TV, it looks far too bright and blown-out on default settings (as do most Sony discs because they're mastered at 4000 nits) so I have to tame the contrast to retrieve highlight information, but once I do then it looks lovely, with more refined grain & detail. And it's only when I watch the UHD do I realise how filtered the grain looks on the Mi4K BD (the re-release with extras), I don't mean "filtered" in an obviously noise-reduced kinda way but the grain is much less pronounced on the BD.

Hmm, I need to watch the UHD again it was the first UHD I saw but maybe I have things dialed in better now.

What do you do with settings to "tame the contrast"? I have a Sony 850B

On my player I can turn contrast down to -4 to pull out more highlight detail.

I'd love to see the inside of the ship in UHD. They should do it the same as the original blu-ray - all 3 versions. It's the only proper way to do it.

To be clear, I don't really care for the special edition. But that entire effects sequence inside the ship is gorgeous on it's own, and like it or not, it's a piece of Close Encounters' history, and thus should be included. I do like a couple scenes in the special edition that was not included in the director's cut.

No such adj on my Samsung, between my first gen player and SDR tv I'm not seeing UHD's the way they are supposed to look. Aside from ID4 I have not been overly impressed with UHD image compared to the bluray

Thumbs up Close Encounters of the Third Kind 4K UHD BD!

Day one for me! I'm hoping they put all three versions of the film in 4K UHD and either a Dolby Atmos or DTS:X track is added! Sony usually licenses with Dolby Atmost/TrueHD, but one can hope!

A fantastic Dolby Atmos track and Dolby Vision would be ideal.
