So updated to include Seijun Suzuki: The Early Years Volume 2: Boxset.

Also, the first boxset came out yesterday as well as BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL.

Really hoping we get a few more Japanese titles this year. Arrow still has the rights to a few more Toei films, but hasn't done anything with them.

Not sure, presumably it's a licensing quagmire or I'm sure we'd have had at least one boxset by now, but even if a distributor does figure it out you won't be reading about it in this thread because, you know, he's not Japanese!

Great news from Arrow today! The Bloodsucking Trilogy looks interesting. Haven't see these myself, but looking forward to this release.

Yeah I read Arrow's announcements in a hurry this morning and didn't even realize this was a Japanese release. Haven't even heard of these films or this director but colour me intrigued.

Also, Criterion's 'Mishima' announcement is huge.

Tokyo Ghoul is now out. Interesting film and hope it sells so we get more live action from Funimation!

While there is no release date, it looks like THE THIRD MURDER will be coming out from Film Movement.

Is this just a general list of recommended titles ? because you are missing almost all the Criterion japanese titles.

Plus quite a few Arrow releases like Stray Cat boxset, Massacre Gun, Blind Womens Curse, Dark Water, Female Prisoner Scorpion set, Outlaw VIP Gangster boxset etc.

I believe it's just upcoming movies as of the date of his original post. After they're released he puts them in the Out Now section. Everything you mentioned came out before the OP date I believe.

I have been watching the Suzuki volume 2 set, and so far I have to say it's better then volume 1 by a long shot

I enjoyed the Susuki set, but really wish Arrow could get a hold of some other directors films. Would love for them to get some more obscure films I've never seen that haven't had releases. Like Rickshaw Man with Mifune. For that matter get Incident at Blood Pass, Red Lion and other films from Mifunes production company. That would be a huge win IMO.

Maybe some films from Hideo Gosha like Goyokin. I bet that would look amazing on Bluray.

There are a ton of Japanese directors not represented at all on Bluray, but I guess that could also have as much to do with a lack of restorations or good film elements/masters for some of these movies.

That's encouraging news! I still have one movie left in volume 1, but overall I just thought the movies were OK. Definitely not bad, but just OK. Even the guy on the special features kept saying how generic each of these are.

Yeah, more Gosha would be amazing.

Goyokin could easily look amazing on blu if given the proper treatment. It's easily one of the best Japanese films of the 60's and surprised Criterion hasn't picked this one up.

You pretty much nailed it.

I only put the films that have come out since I originally started the post in the "out now" section.

Well I appreciate it. Noticed a few releases I had no idea about. Really there are so many boutique labels and classic film releases I'm finding it extremely hard to keep up.

I would give my right nut for boxsets covering Gosha, Kobayashi, Okamoto, Ichikawa, etc They are sorely missed on the format.

Same here. Especially Gosha. There are some amazing films in his filmography that really surprise haven't even gotten a DVD release.

Would love to upgrade the ones that have gotten blu-ray releases like Goyokin, Onimasa, the Geisha.

I'm still shocked that Hunter in the Dark hasn't gotten a release yet. I've been bugging Criterion for years to release it after I found out they had the rights. They have so many Gosha films, but don't do jack with them. It's a little frustrating. I'd rather them give the rights to someone who will actually release the films.
