Thanks for this!

Quite distressing to see the lack of Blu-ray releases in North America given the amount of high-praised exposure on films such as Okurobito (Departures) & pretty much almost all of Hirokazu Koreeda's (Like Father Like Son, Maboroshi, Nobody Knows or My Little Sister (though a Korean English sub is available)).

Which is a bit odd as almost all his films get a DVD release here, but no blu-ray. I always say a DVD is better than nothing, but it would be nice if they released both. I'm pretty sure AFTER THE STORM will be getting a blu-ray in the US.

It's depressing how Maboroshi has no Blu-ray release anywhere in the world.

Thanks for this! I try to keep up with all the interesting Japanese films getting released, but "Bullet Train" slipped by my radar until recently, and I had no idea now that "Brutal Tales of Chivalry" was coming. It's always nice when companies like Twilight Time or Olive stray from their comfort zone (of Golden Age Hollywood flicks) a little bit and shine some light on a few unsung Japanese titles.

Also... TAG WAS ANNOUNCED, WHAT?!!?! YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!
I had no idea. I'm a huge Sono fan and TAG is imo his best work since "Why Don't You Play in Hell?", and my favourite film in general released in the last two years.

I'm a Sion Sono fan as well, got almost his films available in Region A:
- Love Exposure
- Guilty of Romance
- Tokyo Tribe
- Why Don't You Play in Hell?
- Himizu

Thanks for letting us know about TAG. I'll be blind-buying this knowing it will be bat-shit crazy and enjoyable!

Awesome to hear, I might blind-buy TAG as well. I loved Love Exposure, and found Suicide Club, WDYPIH, and Tokyo Tribe pretty interesting.

That would indeed be all the Sono films on Region A blu-ray, I do believe.

TAG has got to be Sion Sono's most unapologetically bat-shit crazy movie – think Strange Circus but much less "grounded" (haha). It's not quite as high quality IMO - as dark or interesting - as Strange Circus or Guilty of Romance (two of his best), but I definitely recommend it if you like those movies.

I just added it to the blu-ray.com database, should show up shortly. From the looks of it, it's gonna be a bare-bones bd-r, but... I'll take it.

Sion Sono has easily become a HUGE name in Japanese cinema in the last few years. He's been directly for awhile, but he's starting to get more and more recognition abroad.

I'll be getting TAG for sure, but wish it wasn't on a recordable disc. However, it seems like all of the companies releases are in this format. Looking forward to watching this one.

get thread idea. I'm always interested in new Japanese films on bluray. I was hopeful that when Arrow announced a US division that we'd start getting more releases here in North America and it does seem to be the case.

Would Region A or All Region blu-rays (with English subs) from other locations (HK, Korea, UK, Japan etc) be considered with this thread? Or should it only be kept with North American releases?

I'd prefer to keep it within North America, but if there is a title you really want on there that's all regions or region A with subs, I can include it.

I created a now out section to put move films that have come out so people can still track them if they didn't realize they had come out.

So yeah, Tampopo is now out, and what a great film. Hope for more Juzo Itami films from Criterion in the future.

North America only, please. This is the NA forum; there are other sections for other regions of the world for a reason. Too many threads get bogged down with people talking about international releases. For people who don't import, it makes finding info harder having to sift through it all.

I tend to agree, so I think I'll keep it for North America for now. Your avatar makes me hope that Shin Godzilla will soon be on the list. Been waiting forever on that one.

Thanks! If Shin Godzilla follows the lead of the Attack on Titan live-action movies (Toho productions distributed by Funimation), it should be out later in the year. Fall, perhaps. I saw it twice in theater, and am looking forward to the Blu!
