But I recommend Magnolia with the $1140 price - not sure how long it will last!

Any thoughts on $65 for a 4 year coverage? Standard is one year. Perhaps I will be on to my second player by late 2007
I'm surprised Magnolia would have this unit on sale so soon! I would certainly buy it there at the price before going the eBay route, though I do note that the seller there has a 100% rating. I would just prefer to buy local when possible.

It's noisy when it's doing certain read functions, such as shifting between titles. Not terribly uncommon in some DVD players either. It's a bit more noticeable on the Panny than the Sammy.

I can't recally how it sounds on my Toshy.

It's real loud when the sled move in and out, but the drive in it is a 5.25" bay pc drive. During play, it has a very high noise floor. I'm not sure if it has a fan. I'll have to crack it open.

In my opinion "real loud" is an exaggeration. The transport is no louder than any other DVD transport opening and closing. In a quiet room, you can hear a slight click at manual chapter transactions that you will never hear with the audio on. The unit does have a fan which you can see if you look at the back, and it is also quiet.

Ok - got my Panasonic and hooked it up.

Comparing to the Samsung, I feel it looks a little deeper but really there is very little in it (perhaps good news for Samsung ownwers! ). This Samsung has the firmware upgrade.

The only direct comparisons I have made where 5th Element and T2, so not reference movies - perhaps a better image quality disc would reveal more.

In other comparisons, the load time is quite similar - maybe a slight edge to the latest firmware Samsung.

The sound on the Panasonic is great (not really made a direct comparison here to Samsung) but it took me a while to get it working right.
Heads up: if you have the TV connected via HDMI the player will set itself to the TV audio (usually 2.0) so you have to turn the audio on HDMI off to get 5.1 out of the player.

I have not noticed the Panasonic being particularly loud - you can definitely hear it seek the disc but in playback mode it is quiet. And I can't here the fan - perhaps some fans are more noisy than others...

All in all I am very happy and look forward to watching some movies

Thanks for your opinion. I may be a little sensitive to low level noise, due to the fact that I design automotive audio amplifiers that I continuously am listening to pops, clicks, and ticks below 10 db spl. So, yes a typical fan that is about 20-25 db spl would bother me. I'm not bashing the unit. I find it outstanding, but this is an area for improvement.

Many are on the fence about what to buy and things like noise during playback are difficult to determine in a noisy environment like a HT showroom. So they rely on owners opinions. The term "loud" is subjective and could keep someone from getting a great player. Thanks for qualifying your statement. Since Tuesday, I have played 3 BD's, 4 DVD's and a handful of CD's. If the Panny was making distracting noise during playback, I would not be happy and would have reported it, and likely taken it back.

I am very happy with the Panny. I am watching it on a Qualia 006 and listening thru the full complement of analog audio cables connected to the Pioneer Elite VSX-72, which is feeding Infinity Intermezzo speakers.

Got the package today. The package was double boxed to protect the player even more. Upon opening the exterior box, the Panasonic box was staring me in the face. Magnificent. I cracked the player open, hooked it up, ran the easy set-up, and put in Corpse Bride. Simply amazing.

I can't say enough about RBA Electronics. The shipped the day after I bought it on eBay, at a great price. I recommend anyone use them if they put anymore players on Ebay.

What is Panasonic's warranty policy on purchasing from non-authorised dealers?

I believe it is the same regardless of where you purchase it, I just think they go by manufacturer date rather than purchase date.

I see, because a lot of CEs like Sony and Pioneer don't honour warranties when purchased from non-authorised dealers. I often wonder what happens if something is a 'gift' and you don't know the original date or place of purchase.

Exactly. All you really has to say is that you got it as a gift, and they will honor the warranty. Now, if you go on and tell them you purchased from an unauthorized dealer, that would be a big no-no!

I know, but I still feel safer knowing I purchased from an authorised dealer. I've had dealings with Sony in the past concerning their 5-year ES warranty, and I had to file complaints with my state Attorney General's office 'Consumer Protection' agency to get them to honour the warranty and give me a full refund on a C555ES SACD/CD 5-disc changer that they could neither repair nor replace after I had the unit for only 23 months. I had all my original receipts, and the purchase was from and authorised Sony ES dealer. I wonder how it would have worked out had I not had that leg to stand on?
