I outgrew my built in storage a few years ago. I remember the first DVD I bought and placed on shelf thinking how lonely it looked.
That didn't last long. Now the overflow is in 7 or 8 columns of discs on the floor. Plans are underway to build new shelves. |

Has anyone ever used one of these spinning sort of towers? https://www.amazon.com/Pemberly-Row-...dp/B078SDBPT4/ ![]() Very small footprint when compared to some of the larger Atlantic shelves and holds just as much. https://www.amazon.com/Prepac-Four-S...dp/B005484N56/ ![]() These both take up around a 20" square of space and hold 700-800 blurays. |

Last week I ordered a media storage tower made by prepac. It seemed better than the Atlantic units. They have a variety of sizes. I got the double multi-media that claims to hold 240 blu-rays. It's quite nice.
Previously, we didn't own any blu-ray or UHD discs until June, 2017. We had used Case Logic 320 capacity CD/DVD wallets. They look quite nice on shelves. Though I kind of wish we had kept the cases for some of the DVDs. Mostly the Doctor Who episodes. But they are my wife's so it really wasn't my call. |

Those things scratched the hell out of my CD collection back in the day. Blu-rays are tougher than CDs, but still seems like a risk. I don't have any storage issues though thanks to having a media room, so for someone without that it might be a better risk.

I did a google search to try and find an existing storage thread on here so I can post a question.
I recently bought a 4 pack of IRIS stackign drawers. These: https://www.amazon.com/IRIS-Quart-St.../dp/B00CQGTIBI My purpose is to store whatever doesn't fit on my shelves (which is quite a bit) until I am able to shop in person for new shelves (preferably IKEA) These drawers have quite the distinct "new" smell on them though. I took apart and washed them thoroughly twice over the weekend and they're still airing out. I hear many ways to get rid of the smell including wiping it down with a baking soda solution. Well I'm too lazy admittedly to do all that so my question is: this new plastic smell will eventually go away but for the time being will that smell stick to the blu's I put in the drawers? that is my main concern |

Firmly in the "out of room" camp and it's annoying. At the moment I already have the majority of physical media in storage boxes and bins. But there's also some overflow finding their way into cabinets and drawers, which is definitely a sign that I need to make some adjustments and improvements. At the very least, it wouldn't be a bad idea to combine multiple releases of the same movie into the same case and just store the artwork. Still have a bunch of scenarios where the blu is missing extras or a soundtrack from a former release and so I may keep some of them. Also, tv on dvd sets can take up a lot of space and I'd like to move them into more efficient cases. I'd need to find custom artwork for them, and I generally prefer to take more of a purist approach and stick with the factory packaging, especially when the original theatrical poster art is used for movies. Also need to make a greater effort to go through previous "shopping" waves from Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Black Fridays, and see how many are worth keeping. And I definitely would like a more compact dvd case solution where they'd be slimmer but still are able to safely house the artwork without them getting damaged. I've heard analogies where people are presenting the argument that your stuff is basically a tenant in your own home and the hypothetical cost of it inhabiting space should be considered.

Re-posting from another thread:
I know this is an extremely unpopular opinion on this board, but last year - after thinking about doing this for a while, I got numberous Binders and decided to transfer most (but not all) of my DVD/Blu & CD collection to these. Wow. What a huge improvement this makes!! This is a game-changer for me, and I wish I had done this a long time ago. The binders have made my physical media collection far more manageable, easier to find, and aesthetically looking much better than before. The benefits are amazing: -No longer do I have boxes of bulky, ugly packaging taking up valuable room in my place. Given that I have so many disks, I had a lot of my TV shows/movies scattered/stored in various places, making it tough to remember what I even had at times. -The binders are compact, and obviously take up a lot less room than the DVD boxes/cases. Going along with the above, it's a hell of a lot easier to find shows/movies in binders because everything is right there in front of you. This is especially true with TV shows, when you're not sure how many disks are in a boxed set unless/until you open this up. -For the most part, I also find having the Disks in binders aesthetically nicer than TV shows on DVD/Blu sets, DVD/Blu cases, etc. -I feel the Disks are safer this way than they would be in a lot of the packaging I have, especially TV shows on DVD. In a lot of cases, these TV Shows were inserted into tight plastic tabs that damaged (in at least one case) or could potentially damage the disk itself. Back in the days when I was renting DVD's, there were numerous times I got a DVD out & there were hairline cracks in the plastic off of the circular hole in the middle; this was obviously due to tension caused by the DVD being inserted/taken out/re-inserted into the plastic tab. Also, I always hated the TV show(s) packaging when a Disk was overlapping another Disk in the case. Not only did I not like the way this looked, but it's an obviously sloppy design designed to save space - to the detriment of the disk(s) themselves. -Unlike a lot of people, I don't have these alphabetized (too much time & effort), but do definitely keep TV series/seasons all together. To add to my last post:
-If I get an new individual movie that goes together with another movie/series of movies - and I want to keep them together - it's not a big deal to shift some things around so that I can do this. I cannot emphasize enough how much better this is (for me) than having DVD's/Blu's in the original packaging. I am much happier now that my collection is more streamlined & less cluttered. That being said, note that in the rare cases I do really like the cover art/ packaging (or if I have a Steelbook), I'll keep the DVD/Blu in the original packaging. Some examples: -Mean Streets DVD - the cover art is far superior to the Blu cover, and the Blu's PQ is not much better than the DVD anyway. -Taxi Driver Blu (2011) - possibly the best non-Steelbook packaging for an individual movie on Blu. Really like the thick & durable cardboard, the cover art/pic., and the way this folds out. Also like the nice bonus cards/pictures that come with this. -Mad Max: Fury Road Blu (2015): Nice cover art to a superb movie; I have this packaged in a Blu case with Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (my second favorite MM film). -The Wire Blu boxed set (2015): Beautiful box art/packaging. I've expanded my storage capacity considerably since last posting here. I store all my DVD's and Blu-ray's in Sony 400-disc DVD and Blu-ray Players. Most of the retail packaging I store in my garage where a temperature controlled environment is not needed. I browse my collection in the digital realm which includes high resolution cover art, the location of each disc being called out within the cataloging software I use. When finding a disc I'd like to play I enter its location in my universal remote which queues up my system accordingly taking me to the given Blu-ray player activity.
That being said, I originally owned 6 Sony BDP-CX7000ES 400-disc Blu-ray Players. Over the years I've added additional units as needed. I'm now up to 15 of them which gives me a 6,000 disc storage capacity. At present I'm using 12 of the 15 units. My current library weighs in at 4,405 discs, not including the DVD's I've upgraded to Blu-ray which are housed in my Sony DVP-CX985V 400-disc DVD Players. With the additional Blu-ray players I now have room for 1,595 additional discs. I dare say I'll be good to go for the duration. I doubt I'll ever need to purchase additional units. Well, maybe during my retirement years. Who knows. And I'll leave you here with a little eye candy. The A/V cabinet I use is modular. To accommodate the additional Blu-ray players I had to expand the width and height of the A/V cabinet. It was a fun project to take on. End result shown below. Well personally for me my first solution is weeding out the titles I'll never watch again. That saves room. Then try to get creative with box sets and collections putting them in a different spot then single movies. Don't get me wrong I'm psychical media all the way but man this is when digital sometimes sounds good but I won't do it!
