Maybe they are waiting for 2022 for the 110th anniversary of Titanic

James Cameron probably wants UHD 3D on home video before dropping Titanic.
Given that Alita, to me, literally looks like the 108-nit theatrical Dolby cinema pass just dumped onto a disc then I reckon they'd just do the same for Titanic.

As for the ratio, can anyone confirm what the Dolby 3D version was exhibited at?

Just did a cursory Google search, it’s the 2.39:1 version:

as to the presentation I saw yesterday - to have the 3D imagery in the original aspect ratio (not open matted as the IMAX-3D was) was perfect and it's one of the best conversions ... ever.

There is the question of the Dobly grade being done just for the 3D version, which is 48 nits (per eye), but I don't see why they couldn't have done a 2D pass during that process.

I hope when (if) they release Titanic, they’ve done a proper 4K Pass on the non-3D covertered version of the film.... It is good to know they finally did a 3D version of the film in the correct aspect though.

The problem of doing a 4K pass using a left/right eye images for Titanic is that they were highly massaged to create the 3D image. When the disc was done for standard BD back in 2012, Fox originally wanted to just released 3D combo disc... But after going over the individual left and right eye images, Paramount’s internal QC team, and Lightstorm’s tech crew rejected the 3D combo disc for the US. Lightstorm let it go on the international releasebecause it covered so many territories and the time crunch to get the disc out. Plus... Fox actually had to do an extra sku because of China’s edits.

In case people don't know: many conversions don't just use the untouched left eye and put everything into the right, they actually create two new 'eyes' offset from the original, they're also graded differently to account for the tint of the glasses and the reduction in light levels, not to mention added shite like floating windows (though Cameron hates those anyway). Because of that I'm amazed that any 3D discs were deemed to have a 2D layer suitable for regular viewing.

But are you saying that they were just going to release a 3D disc with a user-selectable 2D layer, even though it had the embiggened ratio only? Seems odd that they wouldn't have considered releasing a genuine 2D version in the intended 2.39 regardless. And I don't understand what you mean about "letting it go on the international release" because I've got the Fox 3D BD of Titanic and it is most definitely not playable on a standard 2D setup. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding everything you're saying?

Despite the news about Disney and 4K discs, I'm still hopeful Titanic is big enough for an exemption... whenever Cameron gets around to approving it.

Titanic belongs to Paramount in North America!

I'm so used to seeing the Fox intro whenever I watch I forgot about that. Hopefully that can help force Disney's hand also?

IDK, what I was told is that Paramount's in charge on making the transfer (which I think was already made back when the 3D was released) and then Cameron needs to approve and then they give it to Fox Disney which distributes it internationally (if they want to and since it's James Cameron's I think they might).

I’m curious which territory you’re in. I wonder if a different production house handled the 2D version of Titanic, because I don’t remember doing the 2D discs for Fox, although my primary focus was Paramount since I was the only one at Panasonic Hollywood Labs that knew their spec backwards and forwards.

By the time I got to the 3D international discs, that was all we were focused on. Maybe Fox did a couple multi-region 2D discs for international territories and I missed having to QC them. (In addition to the China only version of Titanic) It has been eight years since I worked on it.

I'm in England. The main UK 3D release included the 1.78 3D split over two discs (and is not playable in 2D via menu selection), the 2.39 2D on one disc, and a bonus BD containing the extras.

Now that I’ve had time to rack my brain... that does seem right. I just had to think back on it... I think I did the initial video pass on the 2D and then it was re-purposed for the international skus, like I said, it’s been eight years.

I saw the 2D release pop up for £4.99 on Amazon at the top of the page today. At that price, that'll do me for now. Actually looking forward to seeing it again.

I can imagine you saying that like old Rose when she's about to tell her story. "It's been eighty-four years..."

You are a sick, sad little man... And I pity you.

The irony of it all... The two Cameron films I got to work on, are my least favorite of his works. - i was burned out pretty quickly on them, especially Avatar, because I came in on the back end of the 3D discs, and then worked on the SE, which meant a ton of stuff to keep going through, in multiple languaes.

I can relate, I must've watched the movie I'm helping to QC at least 20 times this year for all the various versions and fixes and tweaks that have been done, and it's not over yet. BUT as it's one of my most favouritest fillums ever ever EVER then I'm still loving it each and every time, it's rarely felt like a chore and it's not like I'm doing everything, there are several actual professionals also doing lots of reviewing and QC on it. But thankfully there are no foreign language options so that helps to cut down on the amount of QC, it must be torture to have to do that for loads of different language versions.

Right. And if you said it was coming out then people would look at you like you were aliens.
