Just a little post Christmas update. Added a few pieces to the room.

The wife got me a Death Star rug for Christmas.

And as a few presents for myself I got the Iron Man and Catwoman Mezco One:12 collection figures, and Mondo's Rocketeer and Betty statue.

I am really happy with the Rocketeer statue. I have wanted a nice Rocketeer piece for a very long time, but everything that gets made has the rocket pack from the movie. This statue finally uses the rocket pack from the comics and is great. The only negative is that Betty's head has a darker skin tone than her body. I contacted Mondo about this and they said that's how they were all made and there is nothing that can be done. Still a nice piece that I am glad to have.

Good for you for resisting the upgrade disease. It never ends and can be very expensive. If you have not done so, you might consider paying about $450 and having ChadB come calibrate your 285 and player combo. When it comes to HDR, he can really extract the most from your combination -- and it is a whole lot cheaper than another projector !!

I watched the 4K disc for First Man last night. The film looked pretty good, but seemed a bit flat to me. It’s true to the source though, so what can you do. The audio was superb though. However, I was a bit disappointed that it didn’t quite sound as good as it did when I saw the film in IMAX. Still happy with what my system did though.

I have a side question since you're a big Akira fan. When you watch it which audio do you prefer? I grew up watching the original English dub from the Streamline release so I always pick that. In fact, I saw a midnight show of it a couple years ago and I was expecting it to be the Japanese version but it was a 35mm print of the Streamline release. I was so happy.

I grew up watching a bootleg vhs copy of the film with the Streamline dub that my dad bought a the Chicago comic con about 27 years ago and that is what I grew up on. I remember being so excited for the first dvd release of the film but the new English dub that came with that never clicked for me. The blurays now have the amazing sounding Japanese track and that makes it hard to listen to either of the English dubs. Ultimately if I’m sitting down to actually watch the film I’ll choose the Japanese track. If it’s gong to be a background watch the Streamline dub gets played.

Your dad is cool in my book! It's weird thinking back on how hard it was to get Akira on video for the longest time. I saved up and actually got the Criterion laserdisc in the early 90's which I think was the only official release for many years here. So envious of the animation cell you have.

Yeah, my dad actually used to illustrate comic books for a living and turned me on to pretty much every nerdy thing I am into. I never had any laserdiscs. I was just too young when they were popular. DVDs came out around my freshman year of college and that’s when my movie collecting really took off. I haven’t looked back since.

I’ve really enjoyed having that cel. I got it many years ago off of eBay for like $100. I was amazed that it only went for that little of an amount.

The metal signs can be a bit pricey but Walgreens runs prettty good promo codes fairly often. When I had mine printed there were running an 80% off code. I haven’t seen a better deal than that. The only downside was that they charged $40 for shipping. Which is a bit high in my opinion. However, they were packed very well and came without any damage.

I’m really happy with how they turned out. They look absolutely professional. Now I just need to get a Panasonic sign to replace the Oppo one since I have the 820 player now.

So after all the rain earlier in the week I ended up with some water in my theater room. No equipment or furniture was damaged. Just about a third of the carpet got wet. Spent a few hours yesterday going over and over the wet areas with my carpet cleaner trying to suck up what water that I could. Now I have a bit of the carpet pulled back with a fan and a good size dehumidifier running to get rid of as much moisture as I can. I’m hopeful that everything will dry out ok and I won’t end up with any mold growing under the padding. We’ll see. Hopefully it will dry out by the end of the weekend and I can get the room put back together.

The room has dried out and everything is put back together. Doesn’t look like there will be any permanent damage so that is very good. So, with everything put back together I finally got some acoustic foam panels to put up.

The panels are definitely helping with keeping the sound from bouncing around too much. I do think I need to add some more though. As well as get something to absorb the sound on the ceiling. However, I am happy with what this first step has accomplished.

Your room looks great!! Why did the water end up coming in? I would try and future proof that and avoid water from coming in the future. You don't want to damage any of your gear.

Thanks. We had a ton of rain for a few days in a row and the ground around the house just became saturated. From what I could tell it seems the water came in from the bottom up into the room. It’s kind of puzzling because there wasn’t a drop of water anywhere else in the basement except along that one area in the theater room. The one easy thing I plan to do to help prevent it from happening again is to extend the drain spouts on that side of the house. They already end about four feet from the house but I’m hoping putting them out a few more feet will help in the future. My wife and I have been in this house for two years and that was the first time any water was seen in the basement. I’m hopeful it will continue to be a very rare occurrence if it happens again.

Ahh I see. I am in the process of setting up a similar room in my new basement. I was planning on putting the speakers on a platform just in case we get some water coming in one day. We get a lot of power outages so my contractor mentioned a separate sump pump on top of the existing one with battery back up. I would have a heart attack if my speakers got flooded.

Do you have a sump pump in your place?
