[Show spoiler][INTERIOR: SATELLITE OF LOVE BRIDGE]

[JONAH HESTON enters the frame from screen right, wearing his usual yellow jumpsuit. He is perusing a clipboard and looking perturbed. He bumps into CROW T. ROBOT, causing him to drop said clipboard to the table with a clatter]

CROW: Hey, watch it, meatbag…!

JONAH: Excuse me, but I was just going over our schedule of films, and found some interesting oddities.

CROW: Enlighten me, oh be-jumpsuited one.

[TOM SERVO enters from screen left, whistling.]

TOM: Greetings, my fellow cinema torture-ees! What’s going on?

JONAH: Oh, well, as I was saying, it seems like we have an awful lot of horror movies scheduled for the next thirty days or so.

CROW: [scoffs] Like that’s anything unusual.

JONAH: [thinks about it for a second] No, I don’t mean horri-BLE movies, but *horror* movies. You know, creaking doors, cheesy rubber bats flying around on strings, that sort of thing?

TOM: That *is* unusual. I know we get sent lots of crummy movies, but usual there’s at least the spice of variety to make out dreary existence of slavery somewhat more tolerable.

CROW: What, they can’t bother to send us a decent Sword & Sandal flick? Some nice, oiled pecs…?

[JONAH and TOM give CROW a look]

CROW: [taking a step back] What…?

JONAH: Well, going over the list, there are different *types* of horror movies on the menu, but still, it seems oddly…specific a genre.

[suddenly, alarms start blaring, and lights begin to flash]

JONAH: What the…?! Cambot, give me Rocket #9…!

[EXTERIOR, SOL]

[we see a tinkertoy shuttle docking]

[INTERIOR, SOL]

[The doors open…and reveal JOEL ROBINSON and MIKE NELSON, who enter in a cloud of photogenic Tony Scott steam. Both men are considerably older than the last time they entered the Satellite of Love, and yet are still clad in their trademark red and green jumpsuits, respectfully.]

TOM & CROW: [excited] JOEL…! MIKE…!

[THE BOTS happily embrace their former co-hosts as JONAH looks on in perplexity.]

JOEL: [frowning] The hell…?!

MIKE: [trying to disentangle Crow’s net from his belt] Hey, nice to see you too, buddy, but…how did we get here?

JONAH: Uhhhhh…

TOM: Oh, right, the new guy…

CROW: [Gesturing to Jonah] Yeah, we work with this mammal now.

JOEL: Dr. Forrester is still doing this silly experiment?

TOM: Well, a Forrester is…

JONAH: [making the “time out” gesture with his hands] Hold it, who the heck are these guys?

TOM: What, did you think you were the *only* man trapped in outer space riffing on bad movies with a pair of robots?

CROW: Yeah! There were, like… [glances at JOEL and MIKE, rolls his eyes around a bit as he calculates] …two others before you.

JONAH: This doesn’t explain what they’re doing here now.

JOEL: [confused] I’d like to know that, too.

MIKE: [holding out hands in a placatory manner] Now-now, let’s not panic, people, I’m sure there’s a very logical explanation for this.

[everyone in the SOL bridge looks at him for a very long beat]

MIKE: I don’t know what that logical explanation is, if that’s what you’re getting at…

[JOEL buries his face in his hand]

JONAH: Why don’t we just call Kinga and Max and see what they have to say, hmmm?

[JONAH taps the button]

JONAH: Come in Moon 13, please respond…

[INTERIOR, MOON 13]

[Instead of Kinga Forrester and Max aka TV’s Son of TV’s Frank, we see a sandy-haired man, approximately mid-40’s, inside the Moon 13 hangar. He smiles as he looks up at his captive audience]

MONTY: [smiles] I thought you’d be calling…

[SOL]

JONAH: [confused] Who are you?

[MOON 13]

MONTY: Who I am is unimportant. What is important, is that I now control the horizontal. I now control the vertical. I now control the films you are to watch for the next lunar cycle.

[SOL]

JONAH: So why’d you bring back these other clow -- [JOEL and MIKE give him a look] – uhhh, former experimentees? And why nothing but horror flicks?

[MOON 13]

MONTY: [looks confused] You do know what the particular lunar cycle concludes with, correct?

[SOL]

JONAH: Uhhhh…

JOEL: Wait a minute…

MIKE: You don’t mean…?!

CROW & TOM: …HALLOWEEN…?!?

[MOON 13]

MONTY: [touches nose] Correct, my little lab rats! And to give you all a bit of a treat to go along with the tricks you’re accustomed to, I thought I’d bring back some old hosts to add a bit of spice!

[SOL]

JOEL: [under breath] Terrific…

[MOON 13]

MONTY: And, to sweeten the pot, some of this month’s movies will actually be… [TARANTINO SNAP ZOOM into face] …good.

[SOL]

[JONAH covers his eyes with joy. JOEL slaps his hands to the sides of his head with anticipation. MIKE covers his mouth to suppress a squeal of excitement]

CROW: Uhhh, not to rain on anybody’s parade, but…why? Who are you? Why bring back Joel and Mike?

[MOON 13]

MONTY: Uhhh...it's just a TV show, and you should really just relax?

[SOL]

CROW: [nods] I can go with that.

[MOON 13]

MONTY: Okay, then, everyone hit the restroom, and remember to keep all arms, legs and other appendages safely inside the theater at all times. Oh, and free popcorn and ram chips for all, because... [pulls lever]

[SOL]

[lights start flashing, alarm sounds, shakey-Cambot feature is activated]

JONAH: Oh, we've got...

JOEL: ...horror movie...

MIKE: …siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiign...!!!!

CROW: I call dibs on sitting next to Joel!

TOM: Not if I get there first...!

Official rules will be coming later today... and while it WILL be required to pay to be eligible, the amount will come later once we see how many people are interested. It seems to be about 20+ people already who are willing to participate in the prizes. BUT still feel free to participate in this questions/trivia now even if you don't want to pay when it's announced because these are some of your only chances to earn extra entries to the contest.

Long story short, just answer the question and worry about the rest later.

The first question is simply: Will you be seeing The Nun in theaters (releases today) -and why or why not. Quote this post (just the question portion) and reply with anything. Submit your reply by 9/8/18 at 9AM Eastern and you will receive 1 entry to the giveaway.

SEPTEMBER

Blue = blu-ray, * = first time viewing

The Orphanage (2007) A well-made, creepy, slow burn horror film. Very effective, and surprisingly moving at the end. This got our annual MonsterFest off to a great start!

Village Of The Damned Hadn't seen this in a few years. I forgot how very well-made and effective it is. Terrific movie, and a great looking new blu-ray from Warner Archive.

* The Devil's Daughter (1973) 1/2 (YouTube) My wife and I are old enough to have seen a lot of silly 70's TV movies as kids and we have a soft-spot for them. This is a completely predictable "Rosemary's Baby" rip-off -- campy, and a LOT of nostalgic fun. Decent cast too, with Shelly Winters, Joseph Cotton and a post "Dark Shadows" Jonathon Frid. We liked it ... but if you grew up after the '70's, you'll want to knock a couple of skulls off.

The Dead Zone Easily my favorite SK adaptation -- great story, great cast. Brooke Adams is beautiful! A favorite. Imported the Australian blu-ray. A little disappointing. Sound is definitely an upgrade, picture is too, but it's subtle.

Attack of the Puppet People (1958)

I had high hopes for this one, but I was sorely disappointed. The premise is rather fascinating though, a man who runs a doll factory uses a machine that he created to shrink people to the size of a doll. Then he keeps them sealed in a tube in a stasis, bringing them out when he feels lonely.

However, there was little suspense or drama here as the story slowly unfurls with a number of illogical plot points, and the illusion of the tiny people was not put to very effective use. There are very few scenes where the illusion of tiny people is even captured, and those scenes were generally wasted on comic relief, like trying to use a telephone (which appears gigantic to them) and bathing in a shaving mug.

John Hoyt is excellent as the touched doll creator, and most of the supporting performances are good as well. It's just that there isn't much to the story itself, and any chances to add some punch or actual horror to the proceedings were squandered. By the end, you just kind of raise an eyebrow and say, "really, that's it?"

A few years after the release of this movie, a similar idea was explored in the 'Twilight Zone' episode "5 Characters in Search of an Exit," and it is vastly superior in my opinion. So if the idea of people as dolls fascinates you, there are certainly better options out there.

So, here a few of the movies I've picked up in the last month or so in preparation for the Halloween season. I've narrowed it down to these 3 for tonight (Basket Case, Monster Squad, Sleepaway Camp). Having never seen any of these before, I'll be going in fresh.

So which one should I watch tonight? Rock the vote, horror fans.

Sleepaway Camp! And then Monster Squad...to rinse your mind of SC's disturbing ending.

Sleepaway Camp, and don’t google or read anything about it. Watch it ASAP before someone spoils it for you.

yeah, this is pretty much a dud. It's rare for me to pass on a genre movie coming out in a blu ray release... but that's exactly what I did when Scream released it... figured my dvd was perfectly good enough on this one...

Yes.

I’m not excited about it, but since my theater has it in IMAX and my subscription covers it I figure it’s worth seeing. The audio/atmosphere should be really good in that format.

Seeing Nun at 4pm today (leaving work a little early ). Fan of the Conjuring Universe and the Valak character. I hope it's good, but going into it with low expectations.

Two films to recommend (both British and both with interesting endings)

Ghost Story:

Professor debunks those who believe in the Occult (mediums etc). He will investigate three cases of ghosts, demons and the supernatural.

Well cast and written anthology. Visually interesting with a great sound design. Jump scares, but true creepiness throughout the film. I honestly did not predict the ending.

Beast:

I true nod to "Badlands". ...

Though not a true horror film, still the psychological horror and character study. Really well acted and written for the two leads. This compelling film had me guessing and second guessing myself the whole way...I did not see the specific ending coming....but really well done.

The halloween/horror film I am really looking forward to won't happen until 11/16. Goblin will be playing the Suspiria soundtrack live at a show in KC (and around the US starting at the end of October).

The information is all tagged in the start of the thread, but I will present the official rules now for the contest!

HALLOWEEN GIVEAWAY!

The contest official runs from September 7th until October 10th.

Winners will be notified by/on October 14th. Prizes will be mailed out by/on October 17th.

The contest will have a required cost to participate. There are a lot of available items, and the amount of people interested in participating will determine the cost. This will not be decided until later on in September. The currently goal is to have roughly around 45 interested people in participating. If we get this many people, then the cost will be roughly $5 per person. The more people beyond that we have, there will be additional prizes. Also, I am looking to be trying to donating to a charity. You are welcome to donate extra money to gain more entries, and have some of the funds be off to a charity for a good cause.

Here are the ways you will be able to get entries!

1. Donate $5.00* to be eligible. Donating $7.50 will give you 2 entries, $10 will give you 3 entries.
2. Participating in the 2018 poll at the top of the thread
3. Making a single post in the thread with at least one movie you watched
4. Answering pop-up trivia questions or polls through out the contest period. Each one is worth 1 entry, and there will be 10 total.

This means that there will be a total of 15 entries per person if they donate $10, participate in the poll, make a post of movies they are watching, and answering every pop-up question.

*=Exact cost TBD

Currently, there will be six winners. 6 out of 45 is a pretty good chance at something, plus money to charity depending on how many generous people we have!

no. I just don't think it will be good. it will just be jump scares that only work once. and tbh, I don't know that I'll see it at all. I mean there are so many movie just in my stack, my prime queue, my shudder queue... all of them more appealing than the nun.

this seems obscure, but does the nun remind any one of that tall model from some of the junji ito manga? I'd actually be more interested in that as a movie.

Probably not -- it's getting poor reviews on RT, and The Conjuring was pretty silly. Much higher on my list is The Little Stranger -- that looks better to me.

Came back from the "Nun". The movie started at 4:11. I checked my watch (yes, that's how dull the movie was) when they showed a full image of Valak on the screen...time was 5:11.

The thing about James Wan is he understands you need to sprinkle scares early and often, then build the horror to a crescendo. For those who were teens in the 70's and 80's you'll remember drive in movies...when the big "sex scene" (in the lurid grindhouse movies ie Candy Stripe Nurses) didn't happen till the last 15 mins of a movie. This felt the same way....a lot of tease for 80 mins till the boy and girl finally consummate.

This had more in common with the lessor Hammer Horror films than the Conjuring Franchise. If I were to offer a suggestion would be go over the top like Coppola did with Dracula. Fully embrace the over the top visuals and gonzo performance of Hopkins. This felt they took part Conjuring, part Brandon Fraser Mummy franchise and part Hammer Studios for a rather bland cocktail.

For me the Valak scene in the Warren's house with the painting and hallway were scarier than any scene in The Nun.

I will say this may play better in a small home theater environment, than a large theater.....but that's as strong of a recommendation as I could give.

I saw the movie and as I previously posted I gave it . At first I was planning to go higher but it's one of those films where small things, like bits of humor that lessen the atmosphere, bring it down as a whole. I still had a good time with it though.
