So since this and Wreck it Ralph was already leaked months ago, when will we see The Little Mermaid announcement?

Me personally? I’d like these presented as if we were looking directly at the original artwork pre-filmic artifacts. But, that’s an unpopular opinion around here.
The best example I can give you for that is the production of Bambi...film grain gave life and atmosphere to those evocative, poetic backgrounds. The grain was the air of the film, there was motion, the air *moved*. The Walt crew in 1942 knew about film grain, and the current version of Bambi is perhaps the best example of how removing grain can artistically impact a film, especially vintage animation. Would Walt have loved the chance to go back and fix production artifacts like cell dust, or fix inking mistakes, registration errors, contrast flickers? I can't answer that definitely, other than anecdotal evidence stating these all bugged and disappointed him, so sure, I guess he would. Not at all sure he'd be down with removing grain.

Really hope for steelbook releases of their animated films. I cant STAND those stupid round edges on the slipcovers. If they'd only switch back to the regular ones...

One last thing and then off to bed...here's a question.

Should Toy Story have film grain? Those digital files in original release were written to film, too. Toy Story's original theatrical presentation was a film print, not a digital file projected via a digital projector...yet I never hear anyone asking for a home video release derived from a scan of Toy Story's *film* negative. Quite the opposite, in fact.

I don’t think any animation should have grain. I want to see an image straight from the artistic source, not an image featuring unavoidable anomalies of the filmmaking / mastering process.

We’ve had this discussion before, and I know you agree different, and that’s perfectly fine. Some want a master that looks like “a film” some want one that looks like “an artwork”. There’s merits in both.

I think I'd walk the edge that says rather than a blanket approach to all animation, the answer is choosing what's appropriate for the individual title. I don't want next January's The Plague Dogs without film grain (man, I cannot wait for that disc). I don't want Bambi without film grain. Grain isn't noise in those films. It's atmosphere. They *knew* the audience would see the film grain. In some cases, it was an advantage.

And NOW off to bed...

I have to question what is the point, if the UHD is not going to yield any quality improvements.

I'd love to see an HD "filmic" presentation of a "Toy Story". To me, "organic" film qualities like grain make CGI, especially older CGI, feel less dated and more "alive". I still enjoy the Blu of TS but after looking at trailers and an old viewmaster (Taken from a film source) a filmic presentation as an extra would be most welcomed to myself.

I hope there is SOME chance of the original Walt Disney Pictures logo being in this version.

And the higher bit rate / less compression of UHD codec

As I understand it, it two years into the Blu-Ray format for Disney to start releasing Animated Canon catalog titles in HD, starting with Sleeping Beauty. I hope the 4K releases of Wreck-It Ralph and The Lion King mean a string of many more of these to come in 2019 and beyond.

Since I'm not so sure about upgrading this movie to 4K, can any of you see any tiny "imperfections" about the Blu-Ray transfer that could be fixed in 4K?
