See if you can identify a studio like Fox or Warner or Buena Vista that seems to contain a lot of movies you like. Blu-ray supports %87 of all major studios but you may find initially that your most popular studios is covered well or not.

It's a pretty tough decision I don't envy you. You may find yourself grabbing both and renting discs until a clear leader emerges from the fog.

That depends on many things. I think it will be at least 2008.

I like HMurch's idea to see who is releasing most of the movies you are likely to want.

If you must have both Fox and Universal released movies, there is no clear answer for you.

That's the $50,000 question As people have mentioned, that depends on a lot of different factors. IMO, two key milestones that will likely set the course will be...

1) Holiday sales
2) PS3

Either one of those (or both) may not turn the tide completely one way or the other, but they will give a good indication of how long there will be two competing formats. Again, just my personal opinion.

If I have the answer, do I get the $50,000? I just wanted to know soon, since I will be purshasing a Blu-ray or HD DVD player this X-Mas. I guess the PS3 sounds good at this point.

The Toshiba HD-DVD players put out an amazing picture though. They just need to work on the functionality and reliability.

Yes, I agree, however, I have never been a fan of toshiba consumer electronics. I bought my last toshiba notebook PC two years ago and it lasted a little over a year. Junk! Other toshiba products I have purchased died well before other brands. If you want HD-DVD you gotta buy Toshiba and it's not gonna happen here.

Thumbs down re: Toshiba electronics . . .

I've never mentioned it before, but the Toshiba brand name is one that I always steer away from now. This is because of a Toshiba desktop PC that I had a few years ago. It was nothing but problems. The day I put it out at the curb with the garbage was the end of that nightmare.

A friend of mine recently had a Toshiba laptop that was so problematic that he got them to give him some kind of settlement (credit) for it. Unfortunately the credit was for another Toshiba product. He used the credit for a DVD player which was also a piece of junk.

I guess I would be more willing to try the other format if they had some manufacturers known for quality making it (like Panasonic, Sony, or Pioneer).

a player? no way!
i might get a pc drive, reader only, when they are available and if reasonably cheap - and if hddvd is still alive by then ofcourse, as if they delay them too much it might turn out useless. i'd only need it just so i can rip the few universal titles i like, so i might even go with borrowing a drive or a bxox addon from someone instead of buying it. or i'd go with a bittorrent download
if theres a good deal on the xbox+addon+halo3 bundle next christmass as the rumor goes i might go for it, and then you kinda could say i have a hddvd "player", though i still find it more likely i'd just connect the addon to my PC instead of the xbox, and use it very rarely, if at all.
but its quite likely that hddvd will be nowhere to be found by next christmass. can universal persist a whole another year with their stubbornness?

I think Universal would be horrified if they found out that by choosing to be HD-DVD exclusive, people would be ripping their 10% share of the pie while the other 90% studios are getting money for theirs.

There are about 3 or 4 HDDVD movies out right now that I want that are not on Bluray yet. I am very slightly considering buying the 360 add-on to take care of these, if there is no Bluray announcement within the next few months.

Also, if the rumors that Cowboy Bebop is going to get announced for HDDVD soon, that may push me a little closer to a decision.

When HD-DVD goes bust all will come out on Blu-ray. I just don't understand the point of buying them on HD-DVD when they will be coming out on Blu-ray.

Yeah, thats true too. I just dont want it to take too long to go bust. If the dual-format players really hit hard, I would imagine the HD people would see no reason to give up, and keep making discs.

I hope you are right though.

They honestly won't have a choice in the matter. HD-DVD is going to go pop with or without them.

Default HD DVD and Blu-Ray

I love both HD DVD and Blu-Ray.I have 2 HD DVD players-The HDA1 and the HD DVD player for the XBOX 360 and I have 2 Blu-Ray players-The Samsung and the PS3 I love all 4 players.I also have a Dtheater VCR and a few Dtheater videos. I have a pretty big collection of High Def movies in my house. With HD DVD and Blu-Ray combined in my collection I now have 112 HD discs And 7 Dtheater videos. What do I like better Blu-Ray or HD DVD?Well I liked them both and I'm not going bash either one.Who's going to win the format war? Well Blu-Ray is looking pretty darn good right now as the winner with all these great tittles coming out in the weeks and months ahead.I'm just glad to be able to buy High Def on disc. Now all I need is a 1080p display.

If the XA2 was rock solid like the PS/3, and Universal would have made a big splash, I would seriously be considering it (and ONLY that).

But, the XA2 is full of problems. And right now HD DVD doesn't REALLY have that one exclusive studio. Because it only counts if they are releasing stuff!

HD DVD is clearly doomed. No point.
