We went years and years without going to the theater. You could hear the movie playing next door, the screens had visible tears and the speakers were clearly blown. Only recently have we started going again since two of the six have been repaired and upgraded with premium, reserved seats and soundproofing.

I rarely go to a movie theater and think the volume is anywhere near as loud as I want in a big theater. Hell, I think 65% of the time, the surround sound speakers aren't even used. Nothing makes a movie watching worse than the lone, behind the screen speaker, going for a movie.

I personally never had much issues with the cinemas/theaters I frequent. Though there was one time last year, I went to see Venom and on my first screening, the screen couldn't expand as it was broken on the sides, the staff were kind enough to come out and inform us of this though. So the screen size had to remain small for the film that one time. After that I never encountered that problem again on my other screenings since they were in different screen rooms.

All the AMCs around me are pretty terrible. Volume not loud .. dirty. I have A-list but go to a new Cinemark that opened up because it is super clean and has XD (there version of fake imax). All the other theatres besides the XD one aren't so great either.
Ever since I made my own home theatre I go less and less besides from seeing a big release. Cant wait until I have room for a large screen and projector .. then I will probably never go anymore. Also I tend to only go to morning / early afternoon showings cuz I hate being in a crowded theatre. People are constantly talking / checking their phone .. I really wish there was a Drafthouse close by. |

IMAX-laser, Dolby Cinema and 70mm may be the best in cinema going experience - but really any theater can, and should, buy a top of the line 4K laser projector and install a Dolby Atmos system, and you're gold.

While I agree with him on the sorry state of many theaters, I don't think the majority of moviegoers even notice the difference or care. Of course it will matter a lot more to enthusiasts on a board like this but I know so many people that think dvds look just as good as blurays.

Norton is also wrong.
Running under luminosity is distroying everyting, give me a break. This doens't factor in a multitue of factors such as screen size, ambient light, distance to the screen, etc....none of which are standardized. While I agree that theatres are not setup in optimal quality....nor is the average home TV setup which he is suggesting needs to be diferentiated from. Put out quality films and people will pay even with a non-perfect presentation. Outside of the size difference, the quality of OLED is better than what I'd reasonably expect in a film presentation based on a multi-gen copy that a theatre is likley getting. |

I don't think its theaters or streaming that's killing movies. It's the fact that while the studios have hooked people with the various superhero films, sequels and reboots/remakes, they don't bother to put that much effort in original films.
Or rather, make an original film that a person wants to watch. Go out of the box. Okay, so you want to make an original movie that's derivative, fine, just make the hook/twist so out of left field that it will engage interest. |

It's easy to say "be original" but the companies are putting millions into this, they want some guarantee they're not just pissing the money away. If it were your money, wouldn't you do the same? |

I have been to theaters before that ruined my viewing experience. Things like, not opening the curtains all the way to fit the ratio being projected and having the picture bounce off a foot of curtain on each side. Sound being so far down you keep hearing the movie in the auditorium next door overpowering your movie. Dim projection bulbs, and here's the worst of all....
When I went to see Toy Story 3, they were replacing the air conditioner in the ceiling at the same time, allowing sunlight to flood the entire auditorium as they tried to lower it into place, the noise of the system, men talking to the other workers and the auditorium being SO HOT! |

I would, that's why I said they got audiences hooked with all the superhero movies and sequels and reboots/remakes. Technically, truth of the matter is the studios are giving the general audiences what they want but not what the stars and filmmakers (and internet forum users and bloggers) want.
