This is probably my favorite modern neo-noir film from the past few years.

Hmmmm... I have a respectable number of Kino titles and I believe this is the first time I’ve ran across this thicker case from them. Could be wrong though.

This one was a different case. I've never seen anyone use this case before. Overall, it seemed to be a somewhat more quality box.

My copies of Diamonds For Breakfast and Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here came in the thicker, non Viva Elite cases from what I can remember off the top of my head.

I got 4 of the films they released last week in my Amazon order that arrived today (this, Sign of the Cross, Raggedy Man, and Breezy) and this is the only one in this style case. Likely the whole production run on this title just got put in this different case for some reason like shortage of the other cases or something.
This was my first time watching this, & I didn't think it was especially gripping. And I didn't like that there was no definite resolution. I get that perhaps they wanted to leave it unresolved since they were trying to be historically accurate, but this felt like a watered down version of the films based on James Ellroy novels, LA Confidetial & The Black Dahlia. Even though those take a lot artistic license with history, I find their narrative arcs more satisfying - even though I do find Black Dahlia to be both quite unpleasant, and hampered by a poor cast - specifically Josh Hartnett & Aaron Eckhart. The cast of Hollywoodland at least does quite well with what they had to work with.

I was hoping to watch this (1st viewing) on my days off. Yesterday, today, or tomorrow. I ordered through Best Buy and am still in “item delayed” status. They were unable to fulfill my pre-order of Just One of the Guys, and another small title earlier this year too. I’m starting to see a pattern.

i never tire of this film. I do find it gripping and very well made and superbly acted by Ben Affleck and Diane Lane.

Mine came in a normal size and thickness case

Is this an upgrade worth it over the Miramax UK/Euro release.

It’s almost certainly the same master. Any difference would be down to the encode, and negligible at best. It does have a new commentary from a film journalist, but unless you really want that, there’s no reason to upgrade if you own one of the overseas releases.

I have noticed some moderate DNR and filtering on the Miramax disc so I am not sure if this is from Disney's encoding, or part of the original DI.

Probably the original DI since no new scan has been done since. It looks about the same on Starz and Showtime (where this film airs frequently for some reason). Some shots (like the flashbacks) were given a mild filter for stylistic purposes, and I had to check my equipment and settings, it looked so weird.

It has TWO additional commentaries - as they were both left off the international releases. Only the US DVD and HD-DVD had a commentary.
I prefer this encode over the older one.
Go for the Kino I reckon.

Yeah, the Kino release is a perfectly acceptable release. It's an older master for sure, but it doesn't look all that bad as some have made it seem to be. It's better than the DVD for sure, especially on a larger screen.

Yeah. The KINO release covers all the bases.
Underrated movie this. BEN AFFLECK and DIANE LANE were superb.

An interesting movie I hope to explore further at some point via rewatches and the special features.

But yeah, the actual PQ is basically DVD tier for me. Meh. Kinda a bummer for a movie this rewatchable.
