I can't win.
I've seen 'amateurs' re-grade movies, but I'd have zero clue how to do that and preserve quality.

I prefer the colors and details of the new scan too, but doesn't it look horizontally stretched a bit? Especially in these shots:

aspect ratio may be incorrectly set to 1.85:1 when it should be 1.78:1

Going through the caps aholic pics again,.. I subjectively see more dynamic range and finer details on the German scan (perhaps because its darker w/ less 'boosted' resolution?). I hate that pink-green hue from the older master, but I think the gamma is jacked on the new master, they probably mistakenly set it to 0-255 when it should be 16-235 (X-files did the same mistake on S8 or S9?).
Every scene is re-framed between the two! In the scene between Lambert and Orser sitting outside, you can see the top of his coffee cup and watch on the US version, whereas most of the hand and the watch are cropped out on the German one. It's like this for every single scene.
It's frustrating because the overall bit-rate is something like 20 on the German, and 40 on the US. What a missed opportunity.
And why couldn't they just port the commentary over? And the 20 mins of deleted scenes?
Sorry VS if you're reading this. Thanks for the work you put in. 7.75/10 just going off these images. If you didn't boost the brightness would've been an 8.5/10. Commentary + deleted scenes = 9/10.

Are the deleted scenes good? I’m a VS subscriber and have a copy of this on the way but I actually prefer the German screencaps because of the atmosphere. The red skin tones don’t bother me as much. Trying to decide if I should grab a copy of the German edition the next time I import from Amazon Germany

The film was meant to replicate the moody, gloomy style of Se7en, so the darker transfer is almost certainly more accurate to the filmmakers' intent. Too dark? Possibly. But the new VS transfer is certainly far too bright. The DE transfer is very red, noticeable in the skin tones, but whether that's another intentional effect or a grading SNAFU, I don't know.

that's how the original master was done, extra pink+green, he says so in the commentary.
Seems they backed way off on that for the new remaster.

In that case the VS is completely borked.

we could lower the brightness (or gamma) a few ticks when watching.
The more savvy could do a re-encode w/ the gamma adjusted.
I still think the German release has more detail.
The framing is different between the two.

It's always fun watching Christopher Lambert murder the English language...

I ended up finding a cheap copy of the German Disc ($6 shipped) so I'm going to watch it and the VS edition and decide which I prefer. The VS disc showed up yesterday, the German will probably show up next week. I'm interested to see the deleted scenes on the German disc

So luckily I didn't pay much for the German disc. The picture quality is underwhelming compared to the VS edition, and the scenes I hoped were problematic on the VS edition from what I read on here frankly looked similar enough on the German disc but with a tint to them. There are multiple daytime heavy rain scenes with bright sunshine which I personally didn't take to. The German daytime rain scenes weren't as bright as the VS, but they weren't really darker, just a different hue.

As for the deleted scenes, unfortunately there weren't any. I can't find them anywhere on the disc unless it's some kind of easter egg I don't know how to access. I checked all the submenus (there aren't many) and nothing. There's the main film, chapter selection, trailer and then a set of other trailers for films I assume this company released in Germany

I just found out tonight that this movie was released on Blu-ray, and almost feces myself! I love this movie. I didn't ever think this would be released in America, but I had high hopes. I still have it on DVD.

update: I ordered from Germany (I'm in the US) and this one has all the deleted scenes, there's a lot of them. Bad news they're SD, and quite low quality.
