I haven't seen it yet, but I don't think WSS deserves the indignity of a single digit millions opening weekend gross like Dear Evan Hansen or Cats (especially Cats.) Time will tell with this one. I really doubt that it is going to have great holds and this everlasting stream of box office revenue like La La Land, just because of its awards nominations.

West Side Story may barely cross 10M for the weekend.
Looking at 3.8-4.1M for Friday with the 800k previews. Comparatively Dear Evan Hansen did 3.2M Friday with 800k previews and a 7.5M weekend. Respect did 3.6M opening day with 600K previews and a 8.8M opening weekend. The movie musical is effectively dead. |

It was packed when I went and a lot of other showings too, but might be another In the Heights which plays much better in NYC than anywhere else. At least it’s likely to have much better legs than Dear Evan Hansen

Thats terrible but lets face it nobody asked for this remake and Spielberg is not the name he used to be to draw in a crowd.

And Spielberg has only had two movies in the last quarter century that at the very least could be said to have significantly underperformed. The BFG and Amistad. Munich and The Terminal were soft but only mildly so. Along with Tarantino, Cameron and Nolan, he remains one of the few directors around that acts as a draw on his name alone, especially in drama. |

I mean, I had some doubts when I heard he was making a new version of WSS and even some minor misgivings, but the actual movie just blew me away. It's been a long time since a movie made me cry. And it was a good cry, because the story is so moving and the songs are just totally amazing. It was just a very cathartic experience.
![]() Personally I don't care how the movie performs, this was never about starting a new franchise or anything so it's a bit stupid to think the movie's performance is somehow going to make a big difference to anyone. If audiences find the movie, great, if they miss out on a genuinely great movie like they did with The Last Duel, well, too bad, but it wouldn't be the first time and certainly not gonna be the last. |
