Haven't watched this. I'm fluent in Spanish and when I saw that clip of Gomez speaking Spanish, that was enough for me to not bother. It's already a pet peeve of mine when non-native language speakers get those parts.

It doesn't do the director any good either coming off as a prick and just saying that he didn't do this and that and never cared to, because reasons. How edgy. It's obvious that the Academy was just trying to do its part by virtual signaling or something.

They should have cast Ben Affleck in a role. He's actually fluent in Spanish. "No sabo" kids need not apply.

Who knew Karla Sofia Gascón was a terrible person? So much for her historical nomination of first trans person to be nominated for an acting Oscar.

She stole the nomination from other more deserving candidates like Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Lily-Rose Depp, and Pamela Anderson.

Imagine being Netflix and spending so much on campaigning for this, just to completely skip out on any PR scrubbing of social media. I’m a lot more positive on the film than most but this is really shambolic and embarrassing.

This movie only really started gathering hate when it started receiving award noms and hype. The first reactions on its release are substantially positive. I don't think anyone was pretending this was going to be accessible or appealing to everybody. But the tide of comments recently make it sound like this movie is being made compulsory, essential and intended to replace all meat and dairy in their diets.

(I make no reference to any social media dramas as they seem to be a separate issue from the movie itself. To begin with at least. Although they seem to be melding into one.)

I think the reason for the large backlash is that it's very clear, the Hard Hollywood Left, have tried to use this movie as a protest vote.

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on where you stand, it's blown up quite spectacularly in their faces.

Wicked really should have been the 'Left' award darling this year, but the fact it's been embraced by both the Left and Right, is more then likely the reason for Emilia Perez becoming the bat they want to bash us all in the face with. There's no victory in giving Wicked the prize anymore.

No, I watched it. It’s a genuinely bad movie. It has grammatically incorrect Spanish in the spoken and sung portions of the movie, tone deaf representation of trans people by trying to suggest that the lead absolves herself of her crimes by transitioning, offensive representation of Mexican culture, and as a musical it’s also tone deaf too. The singing in this movie isn’t even its saving grace, everyone sounds like they’ve been processed through a computer, and more often than not the vocals sound flat and even off key at times (I took choir as a kid and I am in the middle of singing lessons right now so I know what good singing sounds like). It’s quite clear Mr. Director here has no idea how to direct a musical because everyone is completely uneven, even Sidney Lumet wasn’t this horrible when he directed The Wiz. At least with a bad movie like Cats it still had good vocals like with Jennifer Hudson and Taylor Swift in the cast. Hudson’s rendition of Memory still gives me goosebumps, and if even a movie like Cats can get that out of me, then I can at least give it SOME credit. Emilia Perez? Nothing. Bad singing aside, none of the songs are catchy or even memorable.

It's a mid movie, at best. A soft 5/10. It's a quiet musical where the dance numbers look cheap and the tunes aren't memorable at all.
It also ended up disparaging what it was trying to prop up: Mexican culture and the trans community.

Honestly, this a film that should have played at Cannes, gotten a bit of controversy because of the lack of care put into particular elements, end of on Netflix for more people to make up their mind on it then a year later forget about it entirely. It's only because it tied the likes of Gone with the Wind and Forest Gump in Oscar noms that it's getting this much poor reception. It's a film that could have skated by had the Academy not given it such praise and attention.

You’re projecting since you’re taking any criticism towards this movie like it’s an attack on you. Are you part of the film crew?

I don’t give a dime what those people at Cannes think. These are the same industry professionals who give standing ovations to stuff like Blonde, out-of-touch hipster types who like to pat themselves on the back for their moral superiority. It couldn’t be more obvious that this movie’s awards hype is just virtue signaling.

Don’t you find it suspicious that this was released in Mexico, specifically on January 23, 2025 after its success at Cannes, the Golden Globes, and its record-breaking 13 Oscar nominations? This was deliberate, because Mexican audiences rejected the film and if it had been released there first the negative word-of-mouth would have killed this movie’s chances at the awards shows. They waited until after it finished its run to screen it in Mexico so that by the time the backlash started it would be too late.
