Game of Thrones star's Avatar 3 role has been confirmed

Quote:
James Cameron's first Avatar sequel, The Way of Water, only just came out in cinemas, but seeing as the third film has already been mostly filmed, it's not too surprising that details about it have started to come out already.

We already knew that Game of Thrones and Taboo actress Oona Chaplin had joined the franchise for the third film, but now it's been revealed who she is playing.

As detailed in the latest issue of Empire magazine, Chaplin is playing Varang, leader of the Ash People, described as "an aggressive, volcanic race of people". These Na'vi will be different to the original film's and The Way of Water's Na'vi, not just because of their 'elements' as it were, but also in that they will be antagonists.

The publication also includes a quote from producer Jon Landau about the new dynamic in the third film, in which he states: "There are good humans, and there are bad humans – the same thing on the Na'vi side – but oftentimes, people don't see themselves as bad.

"What is the root cause of how they evolve into what we perceive as bad? Maybe there are other factors there that we're not aware of."

Interestingly, James Cameron himself teased that we would actually see two new Na'vi cultures in the next movie, although he didn't explain whether they'd be both associated with fire.

‘Avatar 3’ Is Told Through the Eyes of Lo’ak, Says James Cameron: ‘We Have a Different Narrator for Each’ of the Next Three Sequels

Quote:
Jake Sully is about to be replaced by his own son. In a recent interview on “Soundtracking With Edith Bowman,” James Cameron let it slip that his “Avatar” franchise will feature a different narrator for each of the remaining three sequels. Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, was the narrator in “Avatar” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.” For the upcoming and still-untitled “Avatar 3,” which is now post-production, Jake’s son Lo’ak (played by Britain Dalton via motion capture) will take over as narrator.

“I’m going to take a moment when the dust clears to assess what people loved and what they responded to the most in this current release, and then I may go back and tinker a little bit [with ‘Avatar 3’],” Cameron said. “We may go back and do a couple of moments here and there. It won’t be radical, but maybe fine-tune it a bit to emphasize that which people are responding to.”

“For example, Lo’ak really emerged as a character that people went with,” Cameron continued. “So I might find ways to…he’s already the narrator. I’m giving away something here, but this is OK. I think it could be intriguing for people to think about what’s coming. Jake was our voiceover narrator for movie one and for movie two, and we have a different narrator for each of the subsequent films. We see it through the eyes of a different character. Movie three is through Lo’ak’s eyes.”

Get ready to see a lot more of Lo’ak in “Avatar 3.” The character is the middle child of Jake (Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and he’s a bit of a hot head who struggles to live up to the reputation set by his older brother, Neteyam (Jamie Flatters). Moving into the next film, Lo’ak is now the eldest Sully child after Neteyam’s death. He also could be forming a relationship with Tsireya (Bailey Bass), the seeds of which were hinted at in “The Way of Water.”

Some more details on Jake further taking a supporting role in the series as his kids take over as leads.

Lo'ak is the son with the Whale friend. If he becomes the main narrator, Jake's life could be in danger.

What?!

The people are called Na'vi. Humans are using Na'vi avatars to blend in and live on Pandora.

Spider or Tuk. She's only going to keep growing up and having more agency as the films go on.

Definitely excited to see the Ash People, and I like that they have a female leader. I liked Oona on Game of Thrones- excited to see what she brings to the table here.

Wasn't there also mention of seeing frozen parts of Pandora in 3 as well? Wonder if it's just a landscape, or if we'll meet some of the Na'vi that live there too. 2 new versions of Na'vi in the same film would be really cool. A Song of Ice and Fire, if you will.

He is definitely going to die at some point in this series. I'm thinking it will be in 4 though because there is supposed to be a 6-year time jump during thst film.

Ice Na'vi is the perfect excuse to bring in Arnold Schwarzenegger as their leader.

Avatar 3 Might Introduce "Windtraders" Na'vi Along With Fire

Quote:
Avatar 3 director James Cameron hints that the upcoming sci-fi sequel may feature more than one previously unseen Na'vi tribe.

Avatar 3 might introduce audiences to a wind-centric tribe of Na'vi, based on comments by director James Cameron.

Cameron hinted that the as-yet-untitled follow-up to Avatar: The Way of Water could mark the debut of "the windtraders" during a recent interview with Deadline. The Oscar-winning filmmaker described this previously unseen Na'vi tribe as "desert people... that trade, that travel around [Pandora]." That said, Cameron didn't explicitly state that the windtraders will appear in Avatar 3, which means there's a possibility they won't show up until Avatar 4 or 5, instead.

Regardless of whether Avatar 3 includes the windtraders or not, the sequel will nevertheless showcase at least one other new Na'vi tribe: the Ash People. Cameron confirmed the Ash People's involvement in Avatar 3 in a previous interview and revealed that (as their name suggests) their society is based around fire. He also indicated that the Ash People won't necessarily be as benevolent as the Na'vi that appeared in the first two Avatar installments. "In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na'vi examples," Cameron said. "In Avatar 3, we'll do the reverse."

Avatar 3 Finds its Fire Tribe Chief

Avatar 3 producer Jon Landau later echoed Cameron's sentiments, noting that the Na'vi possess the same capacity for virtue and vice as humans. "There are good humans and there are bad humans," he explained. "It’s the same thing on the Na'vi side." Landau also announced that Game of Thrones and Black Mirror alumnus Oona Chaplin will portray the Ash People's leader, Verang. The executive producer teased Verang's character arc in the sequel, suggesting that she will blur the line between hero and villain. "Oftentimes, people don’t see themselves as bad," Landau said.

Avatar 3 should have plenty of room to explore Verang's moral ambiguity if recent rumors regarding its epic length are to be believed. An unnamed source close to the production claim that Cameron is shooting for a similar three-hour-plus runtime to Avatar: The Way of Water, resulting in a current rough cut that clocks in at nine hours. The source further alleges that Cameron is eager to complete the visual effects on this version of Avatar 3, rather than wait until the final cut is ready (as is standard filmmaking practice). 20th Century Studios hasn't publicly commented on Avatar 3's current length or state of completion at this stage, however.

Avatar 3 arrives in theaters on Dec. 20, 2024.

Six years to travel to Pandora from Earth? That's a lot of time if true, and a good reason to hibernate the humans in those stacks of thousands of sleep chambers that Jake emerges from in Avatar 1 3D. Those don't look comfortable for normal sleep quarters, so months or years of travel would justify them.

All I remember when Jake exits his sleep pad was that he was replacing his twin brother or something. With all the Na'vi technology, I'm surprised they weren't able to put his brother's mind into another Na'vi Avatar. But I think it was still experimental by that point when Jake was testing it as an added tester. I'd have to rewatch A1.
