I do like this film, so a 4K is great news. Hoping they finally nail a decent presentation of the film (having owned the DVD, Twilight Time and then the Umbrella blu-ray).
One thing that bother me is when Barbara yells "We can just run right passed them!". This movie struggles to maintain tension as it is... Then she basically makes light that the zombies aren't really even a threat.

They basically cut the legs out from under the basic premise.

Barbara is so much better in this movie. Why? She holds a gun. She yells (not girly). And never talks about men like the scene in the original when she gossips about college footballer bulges and offers all the men to bake dinner for them before they die in its final pivotal scene. It passes the Bechdel® Test and then some.

I never really saw the zombies as a main threat in that film or the original, rather it's the people in the house and the class, race, gender and political dynamics.

That really is the point of all of Romero's Dead movies: it's plenty of the remaining people who are the real danger to humanity, not the zombies! And that's why, as an admitted non-fan of horror movies, I like Romero's zombie flicks so much (apart from Survival, which is utter mince) as even though they've got this rep for killer gore (pun intended) it's not the gore that I enjoy, it's the characters and the dire situation that they're in. I don't do gore for gore's sake or zombies for zombies' sake, which is why the slight made-for-TV feel of NOTLD '90 doesn't bother me one whit. It's Barbara being a kick-ass dame that pulls me in and keeps me hooked.

I can understand that, but I don't see how it benefits the film to have the characters dismiss the zombies as a threat.

Moreover, the remake doesn't contain the sort of racial tension that can sort of be felt in the original.

But in the original it isn't just the zombies themselves, but also the isolated environment in a time when the country was obviously less developed and less populated than even in 1990.

The middle of nowhere really meant in the middle of nowhere. Yeah, you can run, but where are you going to run to?

All of this feeds into claustrophobic aspect that makes the situation feel hopeless.

I love the part where she is looking around and the big guy is coming up behind her and she turns around yelling and attacking him. It makes me laugh for some reason.

Plus you have Tony hitting the zombie in the middle of the road. It looks funny for some reason.

I like the dry (no blood) look of the film. No point trying to top Day of the Dead.

While one can never have too much Savini, the extra X-rated gore doesn't really add much to the movie.

Don't get me wrong, I'd watch that version if available in 4K, but the theatrical would be just fine IMO.

Ideally I'd love the film, and maybe the extra cut on another disc, or at least the footage as an extra. Depending on who is releasing it, judges how much effort will be put into the extras.

Yes. Nothing. Quiet as the dead.

I was almost excited to see this thread bumped. Baaaah! Back to the 4k waiting game.

I'd assume it's coming, maybe closer to Halloween. If they were already filming extras for it months ago I'd assume it's coming either this year or next.

I think Sony just unveiled Body Double 4K for October the other day, so if they are planning on Halloween we should hear something soon.

I go to horror for the atmosphere and characters in dire situations, too and am by no means a gore fan. As a die-hard fan of the original I've never given this remake a chance- I always just assumed it was an update for the sake of more gore, but I probably should give it another go.

It really had more to do with the fact that Romero messed up and didn't put a copyright on the original film, and therefore never got paid for anything on that film throughout the decades, so he wanted to get a remake done that he could actually get financial benefits from. However, he wanted to also use it to let Savini try his hand at directing. I find the film to be pretty great. Not better than the original, but different enough to be respectable, and the acting from Tony Todd, Patricia Tallman, and Tom Towles are all great!

I really want to revisit this title, but don’t relish the thought of pulling out either of my existing blu rays (Sony and Umbrella). C’mon Sony, bring us some good news pronto on the 4k front!!
