Filmcolors has scans of three dye-transfer prints, and back when the remastered Blu-ray came out I did some screenshot comparisons between 1.85:1 extractions from those print scans (how the image was meant to be projected) and the Blu-rays. IIRC, the few 1.85:1 extractions from the prints that I compared basically lined up with the remaster or had slightly less image area than it (the remaster was opened up to 1.78:1).

Older home video masters will typically show more image area than what was intended to be shown, so it shouldn't be a cause for concern if a modern master shows less image area than an older Blu-ray or DVD master. I believe Paramount are using SMPTE framing charts for most of their remasters now so in most cases the tighter framing is going to be more accurate even if tops of heads or parts of insignificant background items aren't fully in the frame in certain instances.
From memory the opening credits don't even fit on the screen in the Presents version, which is the biggest giveaway.

Really? I can't remember that at all. I just seem to remember people saying it was cropped while using the old Blu-ray as a reference. If the credits don't fit on the screen then that is a telltale sign that something is amiss, although I can't remember that being the case.

Edit: I found an old post of mine from the thread for the Blu-ray showing the framing difference between the old Blu-ray, remastered Blu-ray and my 1.85:1 extraction from the filmcolors.org scan:

Not all of us have 3D TVs, and yet we still want to watch the films in the best quality possible. I say the best compromise is including a 3D Blu-ray in the same package as a 2D UHD.

With that said, I doubt Dial M will ever see UHD. It went to Warner Archive, and I don't think a single film that went to them has been released in the format. Also, the cut negative uses a lot of dupes and probably won't look much better than it currently does.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm did. But important to note, the original WA release was so successful that WHV took back the reins for DC Animation and started pumping the BDs out themselves.

These are all the 4Ks listed in the Warner Archive Collection thread: Batman vs Superman, The Outsiders, King Richard, Cry Macho, The Many Saints of Newark, Reminiscence, and Giant.

I'm ****ing sick of this paranoia. They have nothing to do with the Paramount shit restorations, which are far from new and have happened for many years. The problem is Andrea Kalas. I'm ****ing sick of people bringing them up in every subject.

The reissue was by WAC, but the original release was by WHV if I'm not mistaken.

A 2D blu-ray would already give you the highest quality possible.

Not every film justifies the UHD format. George Feltenstein has even said that a lot, if not most, of WAC's titles don't have sources worthy of an UHD.

Lighten up Francis, there's always room for some levity. It works because we all expect this to be tinkered with in some kind of fashion. It's just par for the course with Paramount. With any luck it's closer to Chinatown than OUATIW

Oh that's true, but yeah, WHE did reissue it themselves in the Batman TAS boxset, and also by itself overseas.

Those aren't WAC releases. They're from the WHE team, but released MOD through Allied Vaughn instead of SDS like most WHE releases. And they were all previously released on Blu-ray by WHE. No film (other than maybe Batman: MotP) published on Blu-ray by WAC has later been released to UHD.

I'm hoping Strangers on a Train will get a UHD, even through that MOD program. It's one of Hithcock's masterpieces and the second most famous of his films that Warner owns (after NxNW).

Yes it was originally WHE before going OOP and being reissued by WAC.

Yep, it was very clearly an exception to the rule, because of how WHV loves their superhero animation more than they used to.

For the rest of what the Archive has released, I can't imagine they are anymore interested in it now.

You may want to take that up with the OP in the WAC thread then because, as I said, he has them listed as Warner Archive releases. Just the messenger here.

Strangers on a Train will get an UHD, it's only a matter of "when". Either Warner or Criterion will release it eventually.

I can't believe James Cameron, George Lucas, and Peter Jackson are going to ruin another classic!

Maybe they'll release the DNR'd monstrosity on UHD in the US, and then release superior UHDs a year later in Italy and Spain, like The Firm, The Truman Show, Roman Holiday, etc.

The issue with those UHDs was the encoding though. That said, no matter how slim the chances might be, I hope that Paramount will fix the issue for this UHD release. If not, I'll wait. This has to be fixed someday, no matter how long it takes.
