It will likely be a huge upgrade given Paper Moon hasn't had a digital overhaul since the UK blu-ray almost a decade ago.

It'll be interesting to see how Criterion handles the heavy grain in Paper Moon. Bogdanovich always worked hard to eliminate "cutty" editing, using elaborate camera choreography and mirrors/reflections to show reactions and to convey scope. With the b+w photography in PM, Laszlo Kovacs had to overlight the sets for added depth of field -- every shot contains deep, deep focus. (Ryan complained that the hot lights singed his hair.) Last time I saw PM on a big screen, the grain was heavy and especially noticeable in close-ups and long takes. Which worked well for the "Dust Bowl" esthetic. Fingers crossed that the 4K scans found a workable balance between grain storms and DNR.

You can see some screenshots from the restoration at their site. Looks very nice to me, as far as grain goes.

Even though it had a different DP The Last Picture Show is very similar dusty grainy 35mm B&W and looks pretty much perfect on UHD. I think the only thing to worry about in regard to grain is the encoding

I want deadly grain storms on my UHD. No noise reduction, no “management”, no balance struck. I want storms of grain that will kill me and everyone I love.

How likely is it that this will be in the B&N Criterion sale in November?

I just noticed Criterion have added a new extra to their upcoming release of Paper Moon, which I've bolded below:

Quote:
4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES
  • New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
  • One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features
  • Audio commentary featuring director Peter Bogdanovich
  • Introduction to the film by Bogdanovich
  • New video essay by Bogdanovich biographer Peter Tonguette
  • Three-part making-of documentary featuring Bogdanovich, production designer Polly Platt, associate producer Frank Marshall, and cinematographer László Kovács
  • Archival interview with Platt
  • Excerpts from a 1973 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson featuring Bogdanovich and actors Ryan and Tatum O’Neal
  • Location-scouting footage with audio commentary by Marshall
  • Trailer
  • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • PLUS: An essay by critic Mark Harris

It's coming out in November so it'll be 50% off. December releases will only be 30% off though.

Criterion added a new photo of the packaging on their site. Looks like a really nice release. Love the disc art.

Says "New 4K digital restoration" but doesn't mention the source. Anyone know what the source is?
