If you zoom in on some areas of these caps (like the black suits on the first one, or the last one) they do have a weird digital appearance to them, like some of the bad Paramount discs.

I'd still like to hear more impressions of the HDR grade tho, and whether it offsets the compression. But if the 4K disc is worse than those blu-ray caps in compression, that would be hard to imagine that it could be offset

If thats how you describe that particular problem then yes.

I've been wondering if it's just my TV because of the backlash but I'm sitting in front of my TV right now, comparing nicwood's screenshots and they look identical.

The problem is the 4k and in those particular scenes I posted pics of.

Will 88 films release a standard edition of the 4k? And do they include booklets with their standard editions? Thanks.

My fellow Blu-ray.comians. I have called you here today to admit I have commited a grave injustice upon your persons.

I was calibrating my TV so the 88 Blu-ray EXACTLY matched the screenshots that nicwood posted. My intention was to prove that the 4k looked completely different.

What I have just found out is that the picture settings(colour, hue, brightness) are completley different depending on wether you have a blu-ray or a 4k in the player.

Upon checking the 4k with my new settings, it exhibits none of the weird blue colorisation I have whined, moaned and argued about.

If I have caused you any undue worry, I am sorry. If I have caused you any extra work, I am sorry. If I have offended you with my snarky french comments...I am sorry.

I have awarded myself 3 days in the hole and a loss of earnings for 2 weeks.

Yours sincerely, this guy IRL...

Thank you for posting this and admitting the mistake. Respectfully, and I do mean this in the nicest of ways, if one is not aware of the above (ie: SDR and HDR/DV are *completely* different beasts, each requiring its own set of settings), you should not be jumping to conclusions nor forming an uninformed opinion. Again, we all make mistakes and we all learn this way, but I was really thinking I was going blind here until I read your post above.

To me, the discs (both BD and UHD) look fine. I do not really see the compression nor brightness issues some users are describing (Oppo 203 and LG oled).

All joking aside, I do know that SDR and HDR are different beasts. What I didn't know was that my settings between the two were different.

I definitely should have checked that both were exactly the same, but I didn't and that's on me.

Are you saying you feel your copy doesn't have the blobs of macroblocking, such as the ones on the suit pants in nicwood's first screenshot above?

I do not see macroblocking in motion when actually watching the BD, no. I do see artifacting in the screen-grabs, but only when zooming in on them. To my eyes, the "stair-step" effect on some outlines on the arms and shoulders is more noticeable in the screen-grabs, but, again, I do not see this when actually watching the disc, and, if I do, it's very subtle at worst. It may be more visible on very large displays, however. I am definitely not denying it's there, just that it does not look as severe to my eyes in motion.

What size screen are you viewing on, Keoma?

For what it's worth, I also have an Oppo 203 and an LG OLED and I don't see most of the anomalies that many users on these forums complain about, whether it's my eyesight, the size of my TV, my tolerance for such things, etc.

I was holding off getting the film (although I love it), but now I've read your post, I'm thinking of getting it again! I have a 55" TV.

Thanks

65" in my case. I doubt you will notice the above if you are using a 55" and sit more than 6 or 7 feet away.

I guess the question I ask again is, does the HDR really offer much of an improvement for a film like this? The transfer does look brighter with nicer resolved colors, but is that really worth the blocky encoding in some areas?
