There is already a comparison online and the Shout and BFI Versions look very differently in regards to framing, colour grade and grain structure.

The BFI Version looks to my eye often a lot worse because grain appears to be heavily scrubbed. Maybe someone who already has the disc can confirm this.

I would be very disappointed if the BFI Version is that much worse.

Well huh, a rather wide chasm between the two and I agree the Shout looks better. Less grain managed anyway. Is the BFI slightly contrast boosted? More saturated colors too, perhaps oversaturated? Anyone have thoughts on the framing?

The US transfer was supervised by Herzog’s brother and producer, Lucki Stipetic. It’ll be very interesting what’s being said in BFI’s booklet and who got their filthy hands on the DNR knobs.

Count Orlock defeated by DNR, sad to say.

Jesus, glad I checked this thread. I was seconds away from pulling the trigger on this through Orbit. Guess I'll go with the Shout disc.

Dang, the BFI definitely looks worse in the specific screenshot you linked. But some of the others are a lot closer, and I would give the edge to the BFI in this one at least. Interesting comparison.

Anyway, my main hang-up with the Shout version is the lack of original German credits. The BFI blu-ray gave you the option of English or German through seamless branching; can anyone confirm this does the same?

Just going off those comparisons, there are some shots where Shout beats BFI and vice versa. I'll wait for some disc reviews to roll in.

Bizarre how inconsistent the BFI is, that screen shot No.17 looks atrocious but others look fine. I shall be keeping mine sealed and it may be going back to the Amazon.

That's extremely unexpected, really hoping there's nothing amiss with Nosferatu the Vampyre now. Such a left field thing from BFI especially as Shout put out an un-processed release just fine.

This is incredibly bad, I'm guessing they got an older master and couldn't get Herzog to supervise the transfer they were working on. I will hold off on getting the Nosferatu BFI in this case.

I vastly prefer the look of SF's grade judging by those comparisons. I wouldn't say the BFI is "contrast boosted", but the SF grade looks like it was done with much more finesse. I was only expecting a difference in encode here, but it looks like SF and BFI went off in different directions with their masters.

Comparison 17 looks like it has heavy DNR on the BFI UHD, but it looks like the differences in grain perception are most likely down to different grading choices for most of the film.

Assuming the screenshots are accurate, Shout Factory’s transfer appears to be superior. I had been considering purchasing BFI’s edition as well, but given this comparison, I will be skipping it. I mentioned in another thread how exceptional Shout Factory’s transfer is, and this further reinforces that impression.
