United Kingdom Aguirre The Wrath of God (1972) 4K UHD (BFI)

BFI will be releasing Herzog's Aguirre, the Wrath of God on 4K in August! Among its extras, it also includes the film Fata Morgana (1971).

Quote:
Aguirre, the Wrath of God (UHD)
Director: Werner Herzog

Shot entirely on location in the wild Amazonian jungle near Machu Picchu, Aguirre, the Wrath of God stars the legendarily volatile Klaus Kinski (Nosferatu the Vampyre) as Don Lope de Aguirre, a power-crazed sixteenth-century explorer who leads a troupe of conquistadors on a doomed expedition in search of El Dorado, the fabled 'City of Gold'.

A visceral, ambitious exploration of megalomania and savage beauty, Aguirre remains one of Herzog's most brilliant achievements and one of German cinema's totemic masterpieces. Available now on UHD, newly restored in 4K.

Extras
  • 4K (2160p) UHD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible)
  • Mark Kermode introduces Aguirre, The Wrath of God (2024, 3 mins)
  • Feature-length audio commentary with Werner Herzog for both Aguirre, The Wrath of God and Fata Morgana
  • A Raft of Troubles: Herzog, Kinski and the Art of Darkness (2025, 19 mins): newly recorded video essay by Nic Wassell on the relationship between Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski
  • The Unprecedented Defence of the Fortress Deutschkreuz (1967, 16 mins): symbolic drama about four young men hiding from an imagined enemy
  • Last Words (1968, 13 mins): short film about the last man to leave a former leper colony
  • Precautions Against Fanatics (1969, 11 mins): short satire about horse-racing enthusiasts
  • Fata Morgana (1971, 77 mins): hallucinatory film exploring mirages and the Mayan creation myth
  • Original theatrical trailer
  • Stills gallery
  • Original mono audio (German and English)
  • Alternative 5.1 Surround audio (German)
  • **FIRST PRESSING ONLY** Illustrated booklet featuring new writing on the film by Geoff Andrew, together with essays by Laurie Johnson, Kim Heaney, and Richard Combs

It's not like they're Kino or something. In fairness, their uhds have been pretty solid for a good while now. But yeah, when it comes down to an option with a possible FiM encode.....

Are there any issues with Shout's UHD of Aguire? I'm genuinely curious, I know nothing about it.

At least Kino's are cheap when they're having their sales.

No it looked just like the BFI BR release.

I have both and found the Shout Factory to look a hell of a lot better than the BFI Bluray release.

A BFI Aguirre release means I can officially retire my BFI Blu-ray. That's the main reason I've been holding off buying the Shout UHD.

I have the Shout edition and also the BFI steelbook. I'll probably pick this up again since I prefer BFI's Herzog stuff to Shout's and it'd be nice to have match Nosferatu.

Totally agree, it's why I couldn't resist. Wide, landscape shots are so improved as to be breathtaking. And yet I knew BFI would likely release this at some point and so I waited a bit. And a bit more. A year slips by, and still no word from BFI. I figured it was likely coming but perhaps not any time soon and finally my resistance waned - about 2 months ago.

Thanks to ko8ebryant24 for posting this comparison between the BFI BD (not the forthcoming UHD) and the Shout UHD:

I've seen the Shout UHD twice over the past two months and then again with the older, English language commentary track. I think you can see in the above shots that there's room for BFI improvement. Some have also reported that the Shout audio tracks (both 2.0 and 5.1) sound filtered next to the old BFI BD but I have not done a direct comparison nor was it obvious to me on those viewings.

I can't help but think that once comparisons are made, I'll be replacing the Shout UHD with BFI's.

Lol, I did exactly the same. But the trigger for me was sale at Amazon on it at 30% off.

I am not sure how much more can be extracted though. Not that SFs was perfect. Just thinking limitations of the original material. But hey, I would be very happy if BFI can take things to the next level.

If the BFI is a substantial improvement, I likely will get it. I really do love this movie. I'm not concerned about the extras on the BFI 4k though, they already all are on the BFI Herzog boxset which I have.

That is the one I am hoping for the most. Given there is Aguirre in Aug, Nosferatu in Sep I am really hoping it will be Fitzcarraldo in October.

Hopefully Cobra Verde, Kasper Hauser, Stoszek, Woyzeck and Heart of Glass all will also in time....

Unfortunately, Aguirre, and Nosferatu are the only two that have gotten 4K restorations, so nothing else is on the table right now.

Are this an Nosferatu worth blind buying as my first two Herzog films? I know that's subjective but both look very interesting to me.
