I dont think you'll see ST:TNG on blu - it was shot on crappy SD video and not even widescreen. Plus if you all remember when ST: the original series came out on HD-DUD, it was $200+ for the first season, and that was shot on film so HD conversion was easier plus they didn't sell well at that price. ST: Enterprise is really the only one with a chance at a good/excellent HD transfer since it was shot in HD. Keep your old ST:TNG/DS9/VOYAGER DVDs and enjoy the upscale, probably the best you'll see and tons cheaper too.
But hey, Im with you... if they could do it, I too would jump on it and get it. EDIT: I stand corrected - ST:TNG was shot on 35mm film and transfered to VIDEO(NTSC) for presentation on TV but the bad part is it was shot at 1.33:1 aspect ractio (4x3 TV). But then again ST:TOS-Remastered was shot at 1:33.1 too but comes in 3 HD versions - version 1. Its pillarboxed with both the remastered footage and new digital effects in 1:33.1, 2. Its pillarboxed with the remastered footage in 4x3 but 16x9 on the digital effects, and 3. released in Japan, its 16x9 for all scenes with the remastered scenes stretched to 16x9... The problem with Star Trek TNG is that while principal shooting was done on 35mm, the special effects were done on SD video. The only 2 options for a BD transfer would be to re-do the special effects (which might be pretty damn cool), or upscale them.

I would love to see them upgrade the special effects and space shots like they did for the original series... since many of the special effects in the early seasons of TNG were really cheesy and very "new technology in effects" at that time. I remember watching it in '87 thinking "WOW, this is so cool" and watching it now trying not to laugh. Lets just hope...

I think the best bet for TNG on Blu would be for Paramount to pick a couple episodes to remaster in HD (Yesterday's Enterprise, BOBW, All Good Things come to mind). They already put out the themed box sets so there is a bit of a precedent.
Otherwise the only way they'd be able to justify the cost would be if they planned to rebroadcast TNG in HD. Redoing post production on the 178 episodes could easily cost over $100 million. |

For an example Chuck on NBC is filmed in 16mm. And while its the worst looking HDTV show I can think of, it certainly looks better @ 1080i than analog TV (480i). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0934814/technical I also think its actually made to look grainy on purpose. TNG really needs re-mastering as even the DVDs look like crap. They're full of rainbows and dot-crawl. They don't have to release it all right away, but I hope they do it eventually.
They should just hurry up and put TOS Remastered on Blu-ray already, preferrably with both the original FX and the CG FX via seamless branching. |
