Default 1080p worth it?

I just read an article saying that 1080p is only worthwhile on HDTVs that are 50" or larger. What do you all think?

If that's true, it seems like it'd be very silly to buy a 32" 1080p HDTV, for example, because 720p would look just the same on a screen that size.

If you're closer than 9 feet from your TV, assuming it's 42" or larger, then yes. If your screen is huge, like 100", then yes.

conventional wisdom is that you'll reach the point of diminishing returns by then, however, you are the only one who can really say for certain whether or not there is a difference (imagined or not).

The only difference in our naked eyes is the dot between the 720p & 1080p. If you understand the logic, then you tell the difference between these two. 720p is somewhat sharper but still has the lines in it, while the 1080p has more color details and no ugly lines.

42 inches and above best for 1080p even a 36 inch might be ok but 32 inches and below better off in 720p/1080i

1080p and ones ability to actually see any difference is really dependent on the person I would be more concerned about pixel pitch native contrast and response time over pure resolution regardless a 1080p panel will have over 2 million pixels usually around 2,073,600 pixels (1080h by 1920w) so whether or not you can see any difference there is a smoother image being produced ( similar to sampling rates in audio conversion) although a slow response time 8 ms or more pretty much negates any benefit. Hope that helps

1080p is worth it, it just benefits larger screens the most.

A 32" or 37" would be useful in 1080P only if you were using it as a desktop monitor, etc. Since most people sit around 10' or so, 50" or larger is probably a good guideline. Smaller than that, and you're just paying for marketing hype (unless there are other improvements such as better video processing, etc.).

This is not based on my opinion, but rather has to do with the level of detail the human eye is capable of resolving at specific distances. Here's a link to an article that explains this is further detail: Here's an interesting article on 1080i / 1080P: http://blog.hometheatermag.com/geoff...061080iv1080p/

For 42" I'd probably get a 1080p, but it's borderline...... Depends what deal you find I guess.
