Default 1080i vs. 1080p, worth buying a new TV over?

We bought a 1080i 57" HDTV two years ago, before I knew anything about 1080p. Anyway does is it really a huge difference? I heard something like it's only a difference if you're 9+ feet away or something? is this true? Anyway if the difference is considerable then I'll have to wait a while before I buy one, if I'd buy it would be another 55+ inch tv and I don't have money for one like that atm.

I guess I could have posted this in a differen forum but yeah.

There is a difference. And the difference gets more obvious the bigger the screen gets. Your eyes get used to what it repeatedly sees. Sometimes, I would force my PS3 to output 1080i for a while just so that when I go back to 1080p, I could appreciate the difference again.

Even though 1080i and 1080p are technically showing the same number of pixels 1080p just seems more sharp, steady and solid looking.

When watching 1080i material on a newer 1080p HDTV monitor (especially one with a very fast refresh rate like 120Hz) you can see a more obvious difference. Interlaced 1080i material can exhibit a "sawtooth" appearance on edge detail of objects in the picture. The picture can sometimes be a bit noisy too, not film grain noisy, but electronic noisy.

Whether it's worth it to upgrade is another matter. 2 years is a bit "young" for a TV set to replace it. But if you can sell it to someone else and recoup a good bit of what you spent for it then an upgrade to a native 1080p TV might be worth it.

What is the native resolution of your 1080i set? What is your brand and model?
Most are not even 1920x1080, but actually 1024x1080 or 1280x720 and just "accept 1080i" but cannot display all of the pixels.

So, my old TV was for years old sony KDF (not sure of native resolution, but not 1080p for sure). Everyone used to always be super impressed when they came and saw the old sony, cause I'm one of two of my friends that have a high definition TV (this is 5 years after I got my first one - my friends are lame!) - and now with the new pioneer they are awestruck

So long story short, I personally think it is worth the upgrade. The 1080p just looks amazing. Granted I'm a techie freak and buy lots of things I probably shouldn't.

I mostly agree with a previous poster, your best bet would be to see what you can recoup from your current tv, then decide if you can afford to pay the difference for the progressive set

The upgrade is worth every penny. You probably notice blocks and pixelation with a 1080i signal when there is a fast moving image on the screen. You won't have that problem with 1080P since its a progressive image.

You really see a big difference when you get screesn around 50 inches and bigger. So there won't be a big difference if you got the Sony unless your Hitachis quality lacks in the Screen. I have a 42 Toshiba that does 720p/1080i
and my buddy has a 42 1080p and there is no difference in quality of the pic. To each his own I guess.

The smaller the screen the sharper. My 24" 1920x1200 screen is much sharper than my Samsung 40" at 1080p.

I can tell a great difference from 720p to 1080p, theres 2x as much data going on.

What kind of TV? If it's a CRT RPTV then it probably can only resolve 1200-1300 lines tops if the focus has been properly adjusted. With a 1080p set, you're getting 1920 lines. In addition, CRT RPTVs just aren't as sharp or as focused.

I used to have a calibrated 1080i CRT RPTV and there is a BIG difference now with my 1080p SXRD A3000 display.

Default Newer tvs

The thing is the newer TVs have technology that make them look better regardless of 1080i /1080p. If you have an older tv that only supports 1080i, odds are a newer tv will look much better even with just the 1080i source. All variables equal looking at a 1080i source, and a 1080p source on the same tv, it will be hard to tell the difference.

but looking at a different tv that does do 1080p, and an older one that doesn't the 1080p is going to look better, but again not necessarily because 1080p in general.
