I'd rather watch movies at home, but sometimes I just can't wait for them that long. Plus, if its a Universal title, and I know its not coming on Blu-ray, then I go see it. I just had to see Knocked-up!

Man I agree, the movie theater crowd is pathetic. Especially on weekend nights. Its like a hang out for teenagers. Parents really do a piss poor job raising thier kids these days. But thats a different topic for another day.

i've definately stopped going to movies as often as i used to. i really only go for Universal movies or ones i can't wait for rental right now.
if you've got yourself a quality HDTV, a rental store with BD, and the patience to wait a couple months..... it's hard to justify going to theatres.
with that said it'll still take a few things to get me to drop the theatres totally: BD support from Universal, quicker theatre-to-disc time, and 3D movies on BD if possible. (saw Open Season on Imax 3D while back, it'd be great if i could do that at home)

i went to watch oceans 13 on sunday im only going cinema for films i really want to see or i will wait for the dvd/blu-ray release now. But i was actually horrified by the pq it was also blocky and it was not crisp at all. Maybe they should just start getting hd cinema screens and get a blu ray player aswell then they would be sorted

I remember seeing Pursuit of Hapiness in the Theatre and it looked bad. Looked like a whole new movie in BLU

As much as I love BD I'll never stop going to the movies. I love it. I usually see like 80% of all movies released in theaters, and usually at least twice each. Living in the Bronx, I'm used to people being beyond obnoxious; example: Dawn of the Dead, the overly stereotypical 300 pound black woman in front of me kept screaming awww hell nahh girrrl! You best get out that damn room girl! Run white girl, run! So going to Manhattan, where people generally understand that the movie doesn't talk back is good enough for me.

Oh and I'm still a teenager anyway, so I'm downright obnoxious half the time anyway .

And if all else fails and the movie is crap there always other stuff to do in a dark theater...

here's an interesting read about where the movie industry may go:

sorry if this was already brought up.

My wife and I still go to the movies as often as possible. Probably about 2 or 3 times a month. Just growing up it was always so much fun going to the movies, I never lost that love. Plus the theater here is brand new, really well taken care of, the sound is amazing, and they have 2 ushers at the door who will supposedly ask people to leave if they are being loud. Just went and saw Hostel 2 this past sunday afternoon, and I will absolutely see Fantastic Four this weekend in the theater as well.

I used to go to the movies every week. Now I go about once a month. I really enjoy watching Blu-ray movies at home with the beautiful picture (when it's done right) and the awesome lossless sound (when it's included). Plus you can't beat the pause button for snack and bathroom breaks.

I will go to theaters as long as they're still around. The crowd in my area is well behaved most of the time, and IMAX films are simply amazing. I saw Spider Man 3 and before that, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

In addition to that, there's something nice about getting out of the house every now and then.

Live Free or Die Hard and Transformers are gonna get my movie theater dollars. But only because I've been waiting for them for so long.

I regret seein Spidy3(could have been soooo good as 2 different movies) and the people I went with to see Pirates3 ruined my night by asking me what happened in the last two.

I'm a few bad movies/people away from giving up the theaters.

I went to see 300 and since then...nothing...

everything else is an obvious letdown as they seem to be watering down movies to make a trilogy that is either living off a name or one movie in the series that everyone hopes will be re-created...

add sopranos to this category as well....just a different style..

I think within the next few years, when Blu-ray becomes more mainstream, Blu-ray will put a huge hurtin' on movie theaters. Over the years, the time frame between a theater and dvd release has gotten considerably shorter. It's only a matter of time where we will look at movie theaters as a thing of the past.

Technology is constantly leading people to stay home. We can shop, bank, watch a blockbuster movie, or keep in contact with relatives without leaving the house.

Of course I'm not complaining, I'm just naturally lazy.

Here's the link, it looks they took all 3 movies, pumped them up with steroids and starved them while hanging a steak over their head.

Interestingly, though, UK cinema admissions have steadily increased from their lowest level in 1984 up to 2003:

Thanks for this. I will not only watch this in theaters, I WILL buy this on BR too. I don't know what draws some people in to watching a movie at a theater, but I do know what keeps them away. I Remember just having to go to Jurassic Park in the theaters and Independence Day too. There are a few more here and there, but Rambo 4 is going to be just like ID4 and JP.

Narnia.
Before that, Episode III (thought it stunk, expected it to stink, thought Episode II stunk, but since I'd seen all five previous films in the theater back to 1977 it seemed stupid not to see the last).
Before that, LOTR - with Troy stuck in the middle there somewhere - man what a waste of time that film was.

How far back does that get me?

Throw Episode II in the middle of the LOTR's along with Signs and that may well be every movie I've seen in a theater this millenium.

Get the impression I don't go to the movies much? And, honestly, it's MAINLY because of the dwindling quality of films (in my opinion of course) over the last 20 years.

Give me Lawrence of Arabia, Spartacus, Ben Hur, Bullitt, 1776 .... I just have not been particularly impressed not only with the quality of film making (obviously from the writing/acting/directing stand-point, and not special effects) but also the subjects of the films themselves more and more.

And enough with the sequels already. The number of sequels which didn't totally suck compared to the original can almost be counted on one hand (with all due respect to sequels for which the first film totally sucked). A rare exception being the recent obvious example where the following films technically weren't sequels - LOTR.

OK. I'm off my soapbox.
