IMO the difference between BD and lesser sources is clearly visible, even if one is not a HT nut. Many are just using the price as an excuse, why they think it is not "worth it". Gladly prices keep falling, so BD will be "worth it" for more and more people each day.
People are always reluctant to change.
The answer to the question, YES, it is worth it. The picture is far better. In addition it is a relatively new technology. It is an improvement over the old. More and more people are discovering this all the time.

It is just like anything else, change takes time.

IMO Blu-Ray is Only 4 Anyone that own's an HDTV. If your Friends do not own one yet they are missing out. HDTV is like the Hart of your system and Blu-Ray is the Blood. and prices for HD sets are coming down from what
I have seen.

Aside from the obvious A/V improvements, the potential that the storage capacity has to offer is a huge benefit. Strictly from a gaming standpoint, we have yet to see what blu-ray can do when pushed to the limits, in terms of technical achievements.
Since it's inception, we have already seen dramatic improvements in the quality of design and effects used in BR based games, not mention the sheer size. Look at some early release titles (Resistance, Motorstorm) and compare them to more recent and upcoming games (GTA IV, Fallout 3, Wipeout HD)--already you can see that Blu is allowing developers to utilize new design elements everyday (lighting, particle effects, physics properties, and on a massive scale) that are helping push the industry into untapped territories.

I think there is plenty to be seen yet from Blu-Ray. From a gaming standpoint alone, I think this is only the beginning.

But hey, that's just me.

I work at an electronic store and always sell Blu-rays. About 1 out of every 3 customers that purchase Blu-rays will make a comment about the price. My thoughts is, if it's too expensive to you, don't buy it, it's that simple. Sometimes I think they complain with hopes that we'll knock some money off the price...nope! Blu-ray is expensive because it's still new technology...give it 2-5 years and it'll drop in price. Besides isn't the money worth for 1080p quality? I think so!

I would have to assume that most people that check out sites like this one
have already invested in a hi-def tv and have or are very interested in a blu-
ray player and enjoy collecting their favorite movies.

To ask if blu-ray is worth it seems ridiculous to me-- first of all if you have
a little patience you can get most movies for 20 bucks or less-- I certaintly
have by checking out Amazon each day and ads for retailers. Secondly the
picture quality is clearly better than ANYTHING currently available.

So if your friends are saying it ain't worth it they probably are sitting in
a family room with a 27" RCA analog TV and a $49 dvd player.
People like this don't care that much about PQ and even if they did unless
they upgrade to a nice TV they aren't gonna see that big of a difference.

It's too bad the economy is tanking and the Christmas season is on track for
one of the worst ever-- I was really hoping that Blu-ray would blow itself out of the water this year-- hopefully with $299 players out there is will
still greatly improve market share...

BTW: He was using the composite output (not component) instead of the HDMI to his TV.
I had a friend say that to, than i went over to his house and he was watching it on a 26 inch SDTV. I was like, yeah, there's your problem LMAO. I than had him come over to my house, all i heard were OMG's THAT'S AMAZING, and WOW THAT LOOKS SO COOL.

He was than calling me the next day asking what TV he should buy

If you do not see the difference when you watch a Blu-ray, then you need a bigger TV or Screen. Even the worst Blu-ray I have watched was dramatically superior the the DVD when using a projector and 100" screen. My wife was also not happy with the cost at first has changed her tune now that we have upgraded to a projector and screen (home made BO cloth screen and Epson HC720) and now refuses to watch movies any other way. Blu-rays need the big screen impact so you can truly appreciate them.

I think this christmas will still be good for blu, but i think next christmas will push it into the mainstream. Lets just hope these holidays bring more and more hdtv's into consumers homes, that is the first thing we need.

Unfortunately, I think this holiday season will be terrible for big ticket purchases. Economy is bad and consumers have no confidence at this point. Even after the bailout, we don't what will happen until after the dust settles.

I somewhat agree, but with some hdtv's being in the 40-50 inch $1000 and under range will entice quite a few people to jump on the bandwagon. We need player prices in the 100-200 range and bd's in the $15 range (for brand new releases). I don't think that blu ray will be in that range this year, definently next year, and hdtv will be far and wide in that price range this christmas. Blu will get a decent bump this christmas, but just wait patiently for the next holiday season

She is now waiting for Pixar to release the rest of their catalog on Blu-ray.
that is exactly true and as bigger tv's get more popular as they come down in price people will really start to notice the difference!

Blu-Ray is so much better than standard DVD's but lots of people don't realize
the picture quality of too many Blu-Ray movies are terrible compared to other
movies, check out this site: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=858316

Let me answer this question as someone who has only had Blu-ray since Thursday night, Oct. 2, 2008. That means only 3 days.

I have a 65 inch widescreen HDTV and with a progressive scan DVD player, and line doubling built into the TV, I thought that the image was plenty good.

I have watched Transformers several times on DVD, so I thought that seeing it in Blu-ray would give me a good idea of the quality difference. Boy was I ever wrong about the difference. I was astonished at how much better the image quality was and the sound was much better too, even though I was hearing it in Dolby Digital.

After watching several Blu-ray movies, I was convinced that it was worth every penny. I then put one of the most recent Paramount Star Trek movie DVDs in and couldn't believe how obvious the graininess was.

No more DVD purchases for me. I just hope that they have enough manufacturing capacity to go back and make Blu-ray versions of previously released DVD movies.

In terms of purely dollar value (direct, no inflation), here is the result of an analysis on my collection (mostly imported from the USA - DVDs/BDs do not include any locally sourced items):

LDs: (10 No. 1996-1999): $22.82 each average
DVDs: (177No. 1997-2008) $20.09 each average
BDs: (149 No. 2007-2008) $25.39 each average.

All of these include postage

Wow, nice way to start off with a 65 in HDTV. I still have a 47 in. 1080p which 10 months ago seem like a monster. Now it's getting smaller and smaller... well the best cure for that is for me 65 incher too.

Welcome to the forum!

Keep spreading the word until they turn Blu.
