Weakest movie of the trilogy easily. Still somewhat entertaining but not nearly as fun as the first two IMO. Very solid PQ & AQ, hard to argue that. Two things - the new Rachael Weiss "Evie" replacement character sticks out, I didn't like her in this at all (they should have just written her out of the story perhaps), and how the hell do Chinese Yetis

It's an average sci fi thriller action movie that doesn't compare with Mummy I and II especially in the audio mix. Liebman's rating the AQ a 5.0 is an exaggeration. The audio was definitely lacking.

As far as the audio, it was excellent in my opinion. Kind of weird that every release that gets rave audio reviews from users and review sites always has a group saying the audio is lacking. Is it just the subjective nature of audio or a settings issue or something else?

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is phenomenal with very active surround channels with, discrete effects, and seamless panning from speaker-to-speaker. Dialog is intelligible throughout, and the dynamic track tests the resolve of the LFE channel on many occasions with foundation-shaking bass.

Home Theater Mag audio: 4.7/5.0

The soundtrack is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and like the Mummy films before it, excels in every department. The sound design is rich in dynamic range and soundstage presence. Panning effects do a great job of keeping you in the mix and the rich surround use really fills the room up. This film has some impressive low bass response, and plenty of it. The dynamics of the action sequences can be quite intense and the sound stage never sounds compressed. If I had to nitpick I thought the dialogue was a bit low from time to time, especially in relation to the rest of the mix. Universal has truly delivered a reference presentation with this one.

HDD Audio: 4.5/5

Enjoying aggressive sound design, 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' crackles with lively surrounds. The soundfield is quite immersive, with excellent panning between channels and robust dynamics. Low bass is powerful, with my subwoofer getting quite a workout. As expected for a major studio film with a huge budget, the mix is incredibly slick and polished, and dialogue is perfectly recorded and balanced. The score by Randy Edelman is somewhat bombastic, but certainly booms and swells across the entire soundscape. 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' is an aural treat.

DVDTown Audio: 10/10

Part of the allure that the original film had over me was the DTS soundtrack of the LaserDisc release that I had owned. It sounded absolutely amazing and was one of the titles that I used to show off my home theater setup. The series has always been one of the better sounding big-budget films and "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" does not disappoint. This is a very aggressive mix that assaults the viewer with audio from every direction and each sound moves fluidly and cleanly through the sound scape. The .1 LFE channel pounds heavily during action sequences and when the musical score by Randy Edelman demands some strong low levels. While I greatly dislike the Yetis, I must admit that the gunfire, avalanche and other elements sound absolutely incredible with the English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. Dialogue is clean and intelligible through nearly the entire film, but once or twice the loud effects did drown out a few words. Thankfully, this film isn´t exactly about the dialogue.

Audio Quality on this release is presented in DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio Surround. The first thing you’ll notice about this track is the film’s great score by Randy Edelman. Even though it doesn’t even approach the first movie’s amazing score by the late Jerry Goldsmith, the score envelops the entire room setting us up for a grand old adventure. With that said this DTS-HD Master Audio track is a real stunner just like the first two movies. Dialogue is perfect as it mixes with the action and never requires a volume change. The various action sequences are the track’s real stunner. Take a listen right around 40 minutes into the movie when Emperor Han escapes and the chase begins through the streets of China. Here the soundtrack opens up and pretty much hits all speakers in perfect unison. The rears handle all the little effects (like screams, fireworks) while the film’s LFE has a deep, low feel to it. Dynamic Range is also quite good in the final battle sequence. Another great aspect of this track was the sense of directionality in that no one speaker worked too hard but everything was balanced perfectly. Universal continues their winning ways here easily earning a “5 Star Rating“.

Agree 100% with the Evie thing. She played too prominent a role and unlike the change of character (Rachel) from Batman Begins -> Dark Knight you don't forget that there was a change of character, its just sticks out more and more once the film gets going.

Rachel Weisz is not there? I say great she was a bit annoying at time in her character and she is way overrated on the HOTNESS level anyway.

Jet Li was great and maybe the first mummy had more trick but in the end we know Jet Li would just kick the other mummy's butt

I'm a fan of the Mummy Series and also liked Scopion King 1 since Rock was tied in to Mummy 2. I found #3 entertaining and like Scorpion King but nowhere as good as the first 2. I simply got it more for a collection stand point. I got it from J&R for $16.99 so I'm not complaining.

Mummy #I had excellent SQ but Mummy #III didn't. The audio was lacking in sound quality. The bass and LFE were often too loud and there was a poor balance between the channels. I could fix the loud bass of course by decreasing the gain on the subwoofer amp but I rarely have to do that.

I don't for one routinely make negative comments about SQ. Most have been positive like in TDK, The Forbidden Kingdom, Hellboy II and others. However this time for Mummy III, I had to really come out up front. I am glad you did enjoy the audio. I wish I could say the same but I honestly can't.

The movie started off strong but about 30 minutes into it, my girlfriend and I were hoping it would end.

So many reasons not to like it. No Rachel Weisz. The characters from the previous films either offer nothing of value or don't seem to be enjoying their newest adventure the way they enjoyed the first two. Jet Li was more of a special guest cameo rather than the film's star. There was not as much hand-to-hand combat as there should've been. Last.. it's just another one of those movies where the white guy ends up with the Asian chick.

Just watch the trailer.. that's pretty much the movie. All the good parts are in the trailer.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion on it, as am I, and I didn't mean to imply otherwise. But, you also tried to call out the review here for the audio rating, like it was out of line. So, I posted the audio comments from all the reviews I could find and they all raved about the audio as well.
That is, audio ratings of:

would seem to indicate the audio is excellent and 5/5 doesn't seem out of place (or like "an exaggeration").

Anyway, that also led me to wonder why this keeps happening and I didn't mean to single you out (i.e. don't mean to imply you're the one always doing that). It's just weird that so many titles that get rave reviews for audio from reviewers (and usually many of us) will always have a group that says the audio is lacking. Edit: On 2nd thought, it's not any different than the picture quality where the same sort of thing usually happens. Guess it's just the subjective nature of it all.

PQ and AQ was good but I did not enjoy this movie as much.

The part brendan fraser in the chair sleeping was a sum up of the movie.

The story overall was not that great, the change of actor for Evelyn O’Connell was very anoying as well and did not sit to well with me since she is not the character I know.

Maria Bello sucked more than a Dyson. Her wannabe faux vocal impersonation of Rachel Wiesz was a travesty. She was the weak link in this movie.

I loved the PQ, but I felt that the DTS Master Audio track was not balanced well. It was sometimes too loud (drowning out the vocals) and too bottom heavy (the bass was overwhelming).

The Making Of... special feature was good.

I agree about Bello, of course. Her performance knocked a full point off the movie's final rating.

As for the audio, well, I guess we just have to agree to disagree. I was thoroughly impressed by it. I felt it fit right in line with the quality of Uni's other fantastic action movie soundtracks.
