I don't think many people "hate" Hook, they were just disappointed in it and consider it one of Spielberg's lesser efforts.

I decided to bump this. There's been some "Hook" buzz in the Artificial Intelligence thread. I believe the Poll is still active so I'm curious what the newer members think of this film.

I was unaware that this got the Superbit treatment. Maybe there is still hope.

Have always loved the film and own the Superbit DVD. Eagerly awaiting a Blu release. Williams score in DTS-HD would be a real treat and the sets would really pop in HD.

The film was not that bad and was a really cool idea. What was terrible was how the "lost boys" were portrayed and Juila Roberts as TinkerBell was a poor choice.

Personally, and please don't hate me, I thought this was one of the worst films I have ever seen. I like the idea of having Peter Pan grow up and Hoffman was awesome as Hook but having said that I don't see how that idea can be brought to the screen effectively. In my opinion one of Spielberg's true bombs.

I loved the movie, and John Williams great score for it. This is a favorite for my family because they always say that as a kid I looked like jack, Pan's son in the movie (same kid from Dick Tracy). Would love to see this on blu.

You could already see the obvious sets used in the movie on the broadcast version, so a Blu-ray might not be that forgiving to the look of it. Then again, John Williams' great epic score in lossless would be great. I think I'll just buy the complete soundtrack, and try to forget the rest of this trainwreck.

Will this ever turn up in Blu? Everyday less and less catalogue films left to be transferred to Blu and why this one continues to be on the list befuddles me!! That along with The Burbs and the first three Indiana Jones movies. At least The Sandlot was annouced last week!!

Sony seems to have a thing for releasing odd and unexpected titles on Blu, so you never know.

I heard Sony announced at the Blu-Con 2009 they work on a new hight definition master of Hook.
I think it's for this year because it's the 20th anniversary.

So am I the only one? Or does the majority hate it?
I actually adore this movie; I grew up watching it almost every chance I got, and my elementary school even played it at one point. Back then, I wasn't a huge fan of either Robin Williams or Dustin Hoffman, but the story of Peter Pan was one of my faves, and I loved the classic Disney animated film. So, when I heard that "Hook" was about Peter growing up, that was enough to (pardon the pun) get me "hooked" right away. Looking back after twenty years, it's still a very creative and entertaining film, and Hoffman plays the vengeful Captain with such a hilarious flair (I love his scenes with Bob Hoskins as "Smee"). What really sticks out the most in my mind are the characters, and the movie's unapologetic celebration of a child's imagination. To this day, it easily qualifies for my personal "Top 50" of films I've ever seen, and I'd love to see it released on Blu-Ray. The only thing that served as a "downer" for me was later in my life, when I heard about how much of a pill Julia Roberts was to Speilberg (he apparently named her "Tinkerhell"). On the whole, this movie easily gets an 8/10 from me.

Every 6 months a french magazine called « Les Années Laser » print a schedule for the next 6 upcoming months based on schedules gave to them by studios.

When reading it last weekend, I saw that HOOK was on this schedule, Sony is planning to release it in France this November. So there is probably a good chance to see it release everywhere else around the same time.

And personnally, I really can't wait to see it.

That's great news then! Thanks for that update. It is the 20th anniversary this year. I doubt we will get it in the States because we would have heard something by now. It really sucks that Universal did not come through but if France is getting it then maybe there is still hope.

Smile Loved it

I just signed up so I could post in this thread, although I have checked the forum before several times.

When we first heard of it (namely me and my Dad) we thought it was a bad idea to have Peter Pan all grown up. That sort of contradicts Peter Pan's whole being as he is the boy who never grows up. However after watching it we all loved it.

I think the reason Julia Roberts was in it was because originally it was going to be a Disney film, and Roberts was hot off of Pretty Woman. The story goes that the budget ballooned out of proportion and Disney bowed out.

Personally I think it was because Spielberg wanted into Disney ever since he was young. In fact you can see in nearly every Spielberg movie up until about let's say maybe Jurassic Park was at least one Disney reference. (There may have been others, but some his movies I didn't see -- and actually AI had a reference in it). The ones I can name off the top of my head are Close Encounters in the theme music that plays over the credits you can hear a few bars of When you wish upon a star. I can't remember E.T.'s reference (I'd have to watch it again to see, and it may not have one), in the movie "1941" there's Pinocchio playing on a theatre in one scene (as that's when Pinoc was made), I think Mickey Mouse was mentioned in one of the Indy Movies (but don't quote me on that), Jurassic Park had a comment about the Pirates of the Caribbean ride (something about not eating the riders), Back to the Future (which Spielberg produced), had Davy Crockett song playing on a jukebox in the diner (just the first one), Innerspace also produced by him, has a thing at the end of the movie where the computer screen has two options 1. eat me, 2. drink me which is a reference to Alice in Wonderland (and one could argue it's merely a reference to the books, but knowing Spielberg that was his Disney reference, as the movie was actually released by Warner Bros.), There were some others that I can't remember offhand except AI has that bit in the end about Pinocchio. To come back to my point, I believe at several times Spielberg has wanted to come in and/or take over Disney and he almost could have if Hook had been released by them, but that's just my personal take. I apologize for the length though as this is my first post here.

I think Hook would be perfect if they used computer to replace Julia Roberts with Heather Locklear (just use computer to make her look younger) and to edit Ruffio out entirely, man I couldn't stand that guy when I first saw the movie.

Other than those I think the movie would be Excellent on Blu. There's one thing though about Spielberg, and that's he either doesn't like to revisit his movies, or is plain anti-technology. He doesn't do ANY audio commentaries, and rarely any interviews about movies in particular. (He does interviews, but on the whole he doesn't tend to go back over his old stuff. This was also a Walt Disney quality -- He would never have made sequels, because once it was done it was done to him). And the reason I also think he's a bit anti-technology was that he generally tells the effects guys to do their stuff, whereas someone like George Lucas has to have his hands in everything. (And yes I know about the replacing shotguns with walkie-talkies in ET -- this is not really about technology though). Close Encounters was done because it is owned by Columbia Pictures, which is owned by Sony. And Hook is/was Tristar which is also owned by Sony which means there's a good chance it will be released on Blu.

Sorry for such a long first post, I hope it didn't annoy anyone too much.

Keith Weatherby II

It is coming faster than I intended.

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/3775/hook.html

uhfgood- I think it is safe to say there will be no enhancements. We'll be lucky to get a theatrical trailer but at least we will have the film. I'm crossing my fingers on a solid transfer.

Could be... or it could be that he's just way too busy with all of his CURRENT projects, this year alone he was involved with Super 8, Transformers 3, Cowboys & Aliens (as producer or executive producer) and directed the Tin Tin movie.
