Just curious, but what type of music do you like to listen to? Do you listen to a lot of symphony stuff/classical jazz/audiophile stuff, or is it a good mix of everything?

Intamin, I am a rocker at heart so I listen to a lot of heavy metal,grunge/alternative and punk and 90s alternative. My fav bands are Nirvana, GNR,Pixies,Pearl Jam,Radiohead,Smashing Pumpkins,Queen, Aerosmith,Warrant,NY Dolls, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver, STP, Greenday, the Cars and Gin Blossoms.I also listen to some new wave-Depeeche Mode and Smiths. The problem with rock recordings is that there are only a handful of well recorded material. But lately, I've been listening to other Genres as well. In fact, Tori Amos and Cat Power(alternative country) is fast becoming one of my favorites plus they are great recordings. Sorry am not a Jazz man. I listen to Bob Marley only as far as reggae and Frank Sinatra baby! Absolutely NO OPERA

The only one I auditioned in that price range was the Integra 9.8(9.9 now). It was very good if you all your gear was digital. Not very good with analog but non of the Japanese brands are as of late.

Rhett,

With the upgrades that Dave Schulte has done on the Onkyo 885 and the Integra 9.8 there is no longer any problem with the analog side of the units. In fact they are stellar analog performers. I would not use my 885 with my $30,000 Teres Turntable/Soundsmith Strain Gauge Phono Preamp and Cartridge system if it was not.

I hear you! Did you inform Crazy? Hey Rich, how much does it cost for a modification. I'm curious about how much of an improvement will it add to my Denon BDP?

Crazy,

The Onkyo 885 and the Integra 9.8 are twins with different cosmetics. Onkyo is the parent company. The Onkyo unit is under the Onkyo Professional Banner and the Integra is sold under the Integra Banner. Both are Pre/Pros. Dave Schulte has performed his upgrades (modifications) on both units. The Onkyos are more readily available than the Integra version.

Rhett,

The cost of the modification is based upon the item being upgraded. The improvement can be substantial. Dave normally suggests that for every $1000 that you spend with him yields $10,000 in performance. Contact Dave directly to find out the cost of the upgrade to the particular Denon BDP. Again, mention my name, because Dave will be pleased that members of the forum are showing interest after all of the discussions here.

I still have to check out the improvement to my Denon 3800 BDCI after the last work. But the additional work on my Denon 5910 DVD player for CD has been: My upgraded Denon 5910 may be the best sounding stock or upgraded "CD" single or 2 box unit that we have ever heard. And this is without additional burn-in. Performance is still better with the upgraded Lavry DA10 DAC which brings CDs to an entirely different listening experience. The sound keeps improving as I am playing the 5910 and the Lavry DAC.

Wow! I thought the mods were under a grand. I have so much to upgrade and add to my system. I am just now finding out that my center channel cant keep up with my mains as far as tonality and presence. I also could use a good power conditioner and power cords so I'm kinda spread out thin budget wise. Oh I really need a good subwoofer as my def tech procinema 1000 sub is just not cutting it anymoreSo dropping thousands of $$$ on mods is just not feasable for now I guess.

Rhett,

A lot of the modifications are close to $1000. Some less, some more. I understand your dilemma. I keep spending more and more money. And then there are those 5 speakers that Dave will be making for me. And I have already put a deposit down of X thousands of dollars and a lot more thousands to pay the remainder (and we don't even know what the cost will be). We are holding off on the building of the speakers till we have some clue as to when my house will be built.

Two things that you should know about the modifications that Dave does on equipment: 1) The parts need a long burn-in for the equipment to reach their full potential. 2) The resolution of the upgraded components are ultimately limited by no only the other components but the wiring and possibly even the power cords.

It will at least have 1 Esotar2 tweeter-not a perfect match but pretty darn close(tonally and budget-wise )The Confidence Center @ 6k , just too much money.

DAMN YOU AUDIO gods!!! I CURSE THE DAY I BECAME AN AUDIOPHILE!!!
Yes Rich, I understand completely. That's why I wanna get a power conditioner and power cables so my equipment will run as it should. I ought to call an electrician and have them install 20AMP circuits into the walls when I get the power conditioner.

Wait till I finally get these 5 speakers and my home and home theater. Dave is going to make a half tower (16 drivers) for my center channel.
