I did the same, it was the only reason I ordered it since I'm not sure I want to spend that much on it

Not that big of a fan so I'm not dying for the premium & extras, but I have all the Funi LE ones. Figured I might as well keep the steak going even if they don't match.

The German DVD UE of NGE was identically in packaging, but was missing several special features as they would have been required to increase the disc count (which wouldn't work with the same packaging).
That's a common practice in Germany and allows DVD CE/UE even for minimum print runs.
However, aside from One Piece*, it's also common that the Blu-ray outsells the DVD by a lot - and some medium- or small demand titles are going Blu-ray only. But at least for now all sequels are safe.

*: One Piece was DVD-only for years and when they started doing Blu-rays, they even made them in packaging that matched the previous DVDs. But still...

I would have bought such 5 disc standard DVD version and I still would buy it just because it's Evangelion. Alone the fact that it is Evangelion, justifies a (one last) DVD release like this.
You would have needed at least 6 discs, even when dropping most special features.

But imagine: They wanted to release it the best looking way possible. And the new movies are a reboot, not a sequel.

Wouldn't be too surprised if they did a Steelbook in the US later. They probably didn't want to make US customers choose between a SB or a 4K. Maybe they wanted to wait until they could clear the 4K for a SB.

Or just do with what they did with Promare (but reversed) and announce the BD SB after everyone already has their standard copies.

That Steelbook looks really nice, especially the use of the Original Poster art.

Correctamundo!

Our Deluxe Edition release of the film utilises some classy, minimalist rigid packaging, within which you’ll find a Steelbook to house the film on both 4K UHD and standard Blu-ray, alongside a second Blu-ray disc packed to the rafters with bonus content!

Not gonna lie would love to see 3.0+1.11 in 4K HDR so most likely gonna get the collectors edition, same with 3.3333 if GKids or All The Anime ever got the license to distribute that version in the west, now that makes me wonder if they would remaster 1.11 and 2.22 in 4K...and wishful thinking but End of Evangelion remastered in 4K would be really nice too...future 4K film boxset anyone?

I know that. Of course this was a money thing done to keep the disc content and disc number the same (except for the stripped content). They also didn't replace scratched discs unless they were unreadable. Thats why I mentioned this here:

Disc number 5 of the English and the German version are slightly different in content, so I mentioned to strip some of the extras to make it fit on 5 DVD discs.

Not true. The German UE DVD version contains TV + Movies on disc 1-5. All the extras are on disc 6 and 7 (except for the episode previews and the movie trailer/TV spots that are on disc 1-5). The content of disc 1-5 of the German DVD and BD version are identical. The only difference is the missing of both Genesis 0:0 videos and the BD promo spot on disc 6. And the missing of Animatics/AR rush videos 18, 21, 24 and 25' on disc 7.
The English BD standard edition also contains TV + Movies on disc 1-5 (plus extras on disc 5). So a English 5 disc DVD standard release would be possible. With stripped extras like I said.

Reminder that 3.0+1.11 and 3.333 are apparently IMAX Enhanced 4K UHDs.
The standard Blu-rays probably have not gone through IMAX DMR but the 4K UHDs definitely did.

I'm happy we have new IMAX Enhanced 4K UHDs, even if it was already previously released in Japan.

So for only about $1.50 more than what the 4K Deluxe set costs at Rightstuf with my GA discount, I pre-ordered both the 4K set and standard releases for 3.0+1.11 from bull moose. I decided to get the standard release too, just so I can sit it next to the Funimation releases of the three other rebuild movies, and call it a "sort of but not really matched whatsoever" complete set.

I also pre-ordered the UK standard steelbook so I can put that one on my Anime steelbook shelves. Can't have too much crazy Mari in my life!

Wow, that's certainly going all-out for Shin Eva!

While I'm also looking forward to its October release date, I'm probably going to just go with the standard US 2-disc Blu-ray instead. I've already got the JP digipak of 3.0+1.11 as it is, not to mention that I don't have a UHD player for 4K discs. As such, I'd just as soon save some money since the 4K set's art cards and mini-poster don't interest me all that much either.

For some reason I tend to view my US Evangelion collection in a strictly utilitarian manner, while conversely I see my my Japanese home video releases of Evangelion more as collector's items. That's also why I bought the standard 5-disc US BD set of Eva TV for $35 instead of the $175 Coll. Ed. or the $300 UE (although I then picked up a loose copy of Disc #6 from the latter for $20 some time thereafter in order to get its exclusive alternate version of EoE).

I also ordered both the CE and RE, but from RightStuf. The RE is going to "match" the FUNimation releases, the spine design is rather close. The CE alone would stick out as it's thicker and is in a digipak. I have to wonder if we'll see CEs from GKIDS for the first three movies when they inevitably get them. They're probably going to have the Amazon Prime redubs which I'm interested in also having even though they're not as good, gives more ways to experience Evangelion.

The spine on the standard edition matches the standard NGE Blu-ray very well. I noticed last night and it had me considering cancelling the 4K and going with standard. Then I remembered how ugly the standard cover is and couldn't bring myself to do it.

bull moose is still $17.97 and $51.97 respectively. And they pack better than Amazon. So yes, I have ordered from them before.

Bullmoose is also tax free outside of a couple of states, and I usually get my packages before release date (either Saturday or Monday). It's not a bad choice.
