So WYWH was originally conceived as quad. I have both the SACD and BD but haven't opened the SACD (for WYWH) so I never directly compared them. As for the BD, I only listened to the 5.1 mix, not the 4.0. I have to wait till I move next month to unpack the disks and compare the 5.1 to 4.0.

I picked up a copy of "Mariah Carey - #1's" on SACD (US Copy) for my wife, and we listened to a few tracks last night. It is a pretty good disc with a lot more top end and very good vocal separation. My wife, who listens to these songs a lot more than I do, said that the separation was the thing that she noticed most. The big win here (for me) is that she did notice the additional fidelity and saw the value in spending that kind of money.

Not a cheap pickup, but definitely worth the price of admission if you can find a good copy.

I did point out to her that if she enjoyed the sound on the existing system, imagine what it would sound like on new speakers.

Are you sure it's for the wife? FWIW, I got that SACD too
[Show spoiler](also for my wife ).

BTW, nice strategy on planting the idea of new speakers.

I followed it up with a "and when we go to the stereo store, we'll bring the disc so you can hear the difference the new speakers will make".

She caught on rather quickly and responded with "You just bought this so you could get new speakers, didn't you?"

I have the WYWH SACD and it too is notably better than the DSOTM SACD. That's not to say that DSOTM is a slouch or anything, it's still perfectly in place in anyone's "Must Have" multi-channel recordings, but the Quad 4.0 24/96 mix to me stands head and shoulders above the 5.1 mix, Parsons really nailed it. It's so great to finally have a properly mastered version of the original Quad mix as anyone that had the dts/dvd-a download knows the quality was sorely lacking.

I think Guthrie learned a lot doing DSOTM in 5.1, because his 5.1 mix on WYWH is much better. For me:

DSOTM: 4.0 > 5.1
WYWH: 5.1 > 4.0

You can't go wrong with either the Blu-ray or the SACD for the 5.1 mix of WYWH. For me I only cared about the 5.1, so the $35 I spent on the SACD was perfect.

I don't why he felt, that needed to be clarified, as if it's taboo for a male to be a Mariah Carey fan. I don't think it wouldn't have mattered to anybody, if he had bought a Mariah Carey SACD for himself.

I can't imagine why anyone would care either way, as long as rules aren't being broken people can post whatever they want.

Ordered Eagles - Hotel California and Fleetwood Mac - Rumors. Should make nice additions to my small SACD collection.

Can someone recommend a good Mozart symphony release? I want a huge orchestra production, and not a quartet or anything small. A huge production. I did some searching but not sure what I am looking for. The more popular works, I guess.

If you are a Mozart fan, buy all of these and consult a divorce attorney.

Incidentally, we have a sticky SACD thread in the high end music section. I created it a century ago and haven't checked it for a long time.

A Guide to SACD

I don't know about that She allowed me to get my new speakers, so there is something to say for a woman who will agree to that

Many of those I saw last night when I was going through SA-CD.net's Top Recommended titles section, so its good to hear they really are good stuff. Of the one's that had audio samples, I decided to re-start my classical adventure with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra release of Paris/Haffner/Linz symphonies. I really like the energy, at least to the extent that the MP3's would permit. I'm anxious to see how great it sounds when the SACD shows up.

If it meets with my satisfaction - and I'm thinking it will - I'll probably explore some of the other SCO releases. Thanks for the recommendation!

Big Daddy,

I listened through the entire first disc of the SCO disc you recommended, and it is a brilliant piece of work. I think I will have to pick up the Symphonies 38-41 disc very soon! Thanks again!

Counting Crowes SACD finally came from Amazon (a few dollars cheaper than direct from AP). It is a very good release. Great dynamic range and superb clarity. I haven't listened to the entire disc yet, but the few tracks I have listened to sound great and I have no hesitation recommending this disc.

I have so many discs coming now, but I'm getting caught up on my wish list. I already got Elton John - Madman Across the River and some Mozart, and I have another Mozart release coming along with Beatles - Love and Metallica DVD-As.
