Well if it follows the upward trending it will surpass $425 million, this is coming out at the right time. Jennifer has never been more popular and that should boost ticket sales.

I don't think it's going to gross as much as Catching Fire, I just feel people aren't going to go back for seconds as much with this one as they did with the second one.

I feel it'll surpass $400 million eventually, just based on hype alone from the previous film, and it's consistency that has grown it's fanbase. The ONLY thing that can potentially damper those chances, I feel, is the fact that this upcoming Hobbit film will be the last, so it'll hurt Mockingjay's numbers. By how much, I'm not sure of yet.

It will definitely depend on the quality of the film. The 2nd was mostly a rehash of the scenario in the 1st, but with a small added element of mystery and a nice twist ending. This one will have a completely different direction. So, it will definitely be a fresh experience much like the 1st film was. That freshness may be enough in and of itself to get people to go see it 2 or 3 times. Then again, it could backfire in being so different from the 1st and 2nd altogether that people won't want to see it a 2nd time.

Is it getting an IMAX release at all? [edit: NO] That may also affect the takings just a lil' bit.

If this was the final movie in the series, I would've confidently predicted it surpassing Catching Fire. As it stands, I think the box office will still be very good, but diluted somewhat.

Having read the books (more than once), it remains to be seen how they stretch the material to cover two films. I also have a good guess as to what part in the book they'll end the first part of Mockingjay on

The obvious one is
[Show spoiler]Peeta strangling Katniss, but that might be too obvious. Depends if they've made the raid to rescue Peeta (which we didn't see in the book) into the big set-piece which will finish the film. Otherwise I'd go with not showing the raid as per the book, having Peeta attack Katniss and then show some of Peeta's rehab (so it's not all part of film 4), and finish the film with the attack on the Nut. When Katniss gets shot live on TV, that's when I'd cut to black.

That seems like a decent structure to me. First act of the film is Katniss getting used to D13. Second act she becomes the Mockingjay having made her deal with Coin, which culminates with the unseen Peeta rescue. Third act starts with crazy Peeta trying to kill her and then moves on to the big attack on D2.

I think people here are to damn worried with how much a film is going to make who cares if it grosses 1 dollar or 1 billion dollars you people will never see 1 cent especially since the movie has already made all its sequels it is going to make. Just enjoy the ride or dont but who cares about such petty things as a films gross, this is almost as bad as the Marvel/DC BS in those threads about which films will make more money.

Maybe, but from a hype perspective, it actually doesn't seem all that talked about. Like yeah, compared to other normal films, this is a big deal, but considering the talk around the first and second film...this just seem to be a big thing that is happening in the popular consensus instead of "OMG HAVE YOU SEEN/READ/KNOW THE HUNGER GAMES!?!?!?"

B/c sequels or similar movies don't get greenlit if a movie bombs?

Just caught the 'if we burn, you burn with us' trailer, fantastic stuff. I've been waiting to see that moment ever since reading it and it looks to be even better than I could've imagined. Not sure about the
[Show spoiler]warning of the bombing from Peeta though, in the book he kinda lets it slip out ("And you...in Thirteen...dead by morning!") whereas he's doing a full-on "They're coming Katniss...they're gonna kill everyone...you'll be dead by morning!". The difference being that in the book people still think of Peeta as a traitor because his warning was somewhat cryptic, whereas it's pretty clear cut in the movie version, and that may remove some of the tension between Coin and Katniss.

Part of that has to be the fact that they split "Mockingjay" into to two films. And add to that it's going to be a year between Part 1 and Part 2 ....

Yeah, you can be sure that the hype machine will go into overdrive for the final movie but I'm still pleased with what I've seen so far in terms of marketing (here in the UK anyway). Even though Interstellar has just come out and Mockingjay is still two weeks away, there are more trailers on TV for Mockingjay.
