While I respect the contributions of film noir to cinema, if we're going to be honest jazz scoring wasn't really one of them, especially those revered 1940s film noir movies. I know the great film Touch of Evil has jazz in its film but it isn't scored like those neo-noir films. However, I think that game L.A. noire has tracks that have classical film noir elements.

Aspiring writers should be required to study this film. Phenomenal writing, but this is hardly surprising considering the fact that the great Ben Hecht did the script with Charles Lederer.

Excellent release

If you think Western Noir is a genre (which I don't believe it is), there is an article about it in the new Noir City

Hangmen Also Die would be my recommendation out of your two. While HAD can be talky and Cohen Group has a great print available.

The Big Combo is public domain and the companies releasing it aren't spending anything to restore it...

Actually The Big Combo is sourced from a restoration...

Western Noir is a genre? Or is it that some Film Noirs are set in the old West?

Pursued and Ramrod are both Film Noirs...I've never heard of Western Noir and I think you'd need more than 2 films to make a genre.

Two Men in Town and Lone Star are both Neo-Noir in my book....as is After Dark, My Sweet.

My region free copy of Inferno arrived in the mail yesterday, along with my Blu-rays of Ride the Pink Horse (Criterion) and The Cover-Up (Kino Lorber).

This weekend should be pretty noirtastic for me, as long as I don't drop the ball and let real world stuff get in the way like I did last weekend. My viewing of The Prowler a couple of weeks ago got me in the mood to go back to "Dark City."

I'm no expert, but it's not the first time I've heard of the genre.

Regardless of any overt genre classifications, I think that film noir and westerns often go hand-in-hand, in terms of exploring the darker edges of human character.

Classic-era film noir and westerns both concern man's behavior during economically difficult time periods, they both often have bleak endings, and they both often feature charismatic antiheroes (John Wayne's Ethan Edwards in The Searchers could have been quite an incredible private detective in a parallel universe.).

In addition to the westerns mentioned in previous posts, I think that Jubal (1956) has a solid helping of the noir vibe. Delmer Daves certainly knew his way around noir stepping stones. Valerie French is not half bad as a femme fatale.

Maybe I'm just biased, because Blu-ray.com says that both film noir and westerns are "strongly over-represented" in my collection.

I'm leaning toward Hangmen Also Die but the TT sale might change my mind

Jubal is another one I thought of, yes. I feel like there was some discussion of this in the Criterion thread when it came out?

I'm glad to see someone else get The Cover-Up. I think it is underrated plus the cover with William Bendix is awesome.

Probably so. I was a little late to the party in terms of buying the disc, but the noir parallels are distinct, and they make for good discussion. I'm in the mood to revisit Jubal, in fact.

Imogen Sara Smith has addressed this topic in her book, In Lonely Places: Film Noir Beyond the City. See Chapter 8: "Past Sunset: Noir Westerns."
